Lost or found fishing

What's the best or oddest thing that you found fishing or that you lost !

Lost a new long handled rubber net over the side of the boat up on Presque Isle Bay , thought they floated awhile....not !

Found an old bottle along the Niagara River buried in the shore gravel. Not broken maybe early 1900's !

Found a German made folding knife like new in Tionesta Creek.

Another time was drifting and rod went down set hook started to play the fish and it felt good at first but no real fight continued to wind and when it got to boat I had hooked a ball cap right in the bill of the hat and it felt like a fish moving in the water lol.

And just last year off the sunken island I hooked a disk hire that was one of the springs off it. Crazy what is in that lake

Never lost or found much stuff of great value, found a small tackle box with trout spinners and some tungsten ice jigs. A wad of money in front of a Sheets by shenango, nice weed eater on a highway,a lot of lures on islands on Pymy. Sort of found a 16 gauge side by side, I met a friend years ago for a rabbit hunt. He could only hunt till noon, but I continued to hunt till 3pm. I came back to my van put the hounds in the dog box. Pulled out and turned around to head home looked across at where I parked leaning against a big oak was his gun. He didn't even realize he left his gun there for 3 days, and I didn't tell him I found it till day four. lol Had a bunch of things stolen, two grizzly ladder stands, a brand new lock on,two cameras one wildlife nation $100 model and one $200 plus cuttyback with a lock box. I love thieves, can't wait walk up on one, when I'm packing. Not worth what I'd like to do,but it be fun to scare them. lol

Many years back I was riding with a friend at the Quemahoning Dam.  He stopped on the bridge and said "do you see that tree sticking out of shallow water about 10 yards from shore?  Last week I was right about here when I heard someone screaming for help.  I looked over towards that tree and there was ............. up to his armpits in mud!  He saw a bunch of lures on the tree and bought himself a new pair of waders so he could get them.  He got to the tree and that was it!  He asked me to call the fire company, but not to tell them it was him (he had previously turned in a false alarm)".  After a lot of laughs and a lot of messing with the guy my friend did call the fire dept.  He was there when they came and used the ladder truck to pluck the guy from his new waders.  I looked besides the tree and you could still see the tops of his waders sticking out of the mud.  Since that day every time I go over that bridge I have to smile.  Oh, I don't know how many lures he found!

Found a clear plastic lure box busted up on the side of the road near Elk Creek years ago. Must of fell out of a boat or off a car roof. Had to have had 30 spoons in it. Mostly KO wobblers and Cleos.

Lost two wallets in one week ! Left one on a car roof after swimming, 2nd one fell out while riding my motorcycle. Actually got both back weeks later.......no money inside...but I was happy to get all the other important cards back.

Found a St. Croix 10' noodle rod and spinning rod & reel that must have fallen off a car on way out of Elk Creek access It was a rainy evening and didn't see them in time and ran over the noodle rod. That ruined the St. Croix. I reported them to the tackle shops, but no one ever claimed them. Also found a tackle box under the Lake Wilhelm causeway bridge that had assorted fishing equipment in it and a nice Zebco reel. Reported that to the office. No one ever claimed that either.
Nearly LOST my life going ice fishing at Lake Wilhelm. Found out the hard way taking a shortcut down a road to the lake posted no winter maintenance means what it says. Jumped the pile of snow blocking it to find out part way down the hill was all ice. The old '87 Escort took off like a sled. I was hoping the ice was going to be thick enough when I got there to hold it. Thankfully there was a spot where the sun had melted the road bare for about 50' and got the car stopped. Never took that route again......

crappie chris with the winner!

Found:
Mid 90's.  Trolling for trout with spinners in a pedal boat at Twin Lakes in Westmoreland Co with my dad.  My dad has what he thinks is a snag, so we slow down and back track.  He handed the rod to me so I could maneuver.  The "snag" starts fighting.  20 minutes or so getting pulled around the lake.  Up comes an . . . ultralight outfit with his spinner hooked on one of the eyes.  Still in pretty good shape, hasn't been in the water more than a few days probably.  Another 20 minutes of getting dragged around the lake.  Making progress . . . see a split shot so I know I'm getting close . . . leader . . . then the line goes limp.  Hook pulled out of whatever it was.  Guessing a big snapping turtle by the manner of fight.

Lost:
Last summer, fishing a jetty/harbor wall for speckled trout and flounder in Long Beach, MS on the Gulf of Mexico.  Laid a rod and reel down as I was helping my son land a fish.  Forgot about it.  Left at 10 PM.  Back at 6 AM and I remembered, "Hey, I left a rod here last night."  Gonzo.  Fortunately, the rod and reel combined were probably only about $40 new.  Just a beater I used in the salt.  But somebody got a free and fairly functional rod and reel out of the deal.  Lots of poverty in that area, and folks that fish for meals.  So hopefully it was somebody who needed it more than I did.

Captain, that reminds me of my own Lost AND Found hunting story . . .

Late 90's, lived in Kentucky but would return for a one week bow hunt in PA for those three years.  On my last morning hunt that year, I set my little Mag Lite on the ground and forgot to get it at the end of the hunt; got back to Kentucky and was prepping for a hunt down there when I realized where I had left it.  Had my dad look for it during gun season, but he did not find it.

A year later, when I got back to PA, I kicked around some leaves and found it, and it turned right on!

Found - Second weekend of trout season on Laurel Hill Creek I used to have a bunch of buddies to my cabin.  One year one of the guys who had several kids & didn't get out much forgot to buy his license.  While rigging up creek side he realized his error & asked what should he do, it was a decent length drive, in unfamiliar to him territory, to go buy one at the moment.  One of the guys was busting ballz relentlessly about how the warden would take his car, etc. if he was caught with no license, scaring the crap out of the guy who was kind of new to fishing.  I'm wading & laughing at them when I see something shimmery floating downstream towards me.  It gets closer & I grabbed it... a valid fishing license.  The first name on it was Paul, so we still call this guy Paul all the time.  He used it for the day, bought his own on the ride back & we mailed it to the real Paul, with the story, in a letter.

Lost - my dignity.

while fishing a lake in Canada years ago. I pulled in a 4 piece packable fly rod, the cork handle was in pretty bad shape and some off the guides where rusty, back at camp the next day, I was talking to the camp owner that we new well and mentioned the rod and he described it to the T. said he lost it about 8 or 9 years ago. I offered it back to him and he said he didn't want it . so I stripped it down and rebuilt it, and still have it 20 yrs later. I have lost an amazing amount of items while ice fishing down that incredibly  large 8 inch hole, dippers ,foreceps, weights, jig box with about $60 worth of jigs I swear if I could drive the truck close to that hole it would go down.

All great stories ! Keep em coming......

D, the fishing gods came though ! ......good one...lol

A guy I worked with went archery hunting. Not being much of a hunter or woodsman he decided to try a new woods and ended up climbing a tree. For some reason he took his wallet out and wedged it in a limb. Got home and realized he left it there. Went back several times but never found that same tree again !

Found....It's November and a buddy and me are hunting ducks in Hartstown Swamp in the early 70's. Wading along through the brush he finds a 12oz. can of beer stuck in the muck. It's so rusty you can barely read the label, but it's still sealed. He looks at me and pulls the tab off and it foams up. Down the hatch it went ! Not bad he said......lol

Fishing the yough rover a few years back, walked up to the steep bank to take a leak in the brush. As I'm releiving myself, through the leaves moving i see something shiny on the ground. I was pizzing all over someone's tackle box and 2 rods that they either lost or stashed there! I did not take them.

Saw a bobber floating in a lake once, thought nothing of it. A while later I saw it again, up wind of the previous spot. A fish was dragging it around the lake! Couldn't help myself, I put on a large litle cleo spoon, hooked the line and reeled in the poor trout attached to the bobber. Released the Trout, kept the bobber.

About 20 years ago during the middle of winter I was fishing below Uncle Johns.  It was pretty cold and I was bundled up.  I had been fishing a noodle rod with one of the styrofoam floats when I decided to remove the float to try and get down more.  About 10 casts later in the same hole I decided to change flies so I tucked the rod under my armpit and took the fly off.  Reached in the fly box and picked a new one out.  Tried to tie the new fly on and couldn't find the line.

Found out I had dropped the rod and reel from under my arm in the current and never felt it go.  If I had left the float on i probably could have seen it and found the rod.  Left a post on this site but never heard of anyone finding it.

The one thing I'm glad about was no one saw me do it.

This is a lost and found!   Thirty years ago we used to fish Shenango for crappies at night.  Would head out right before dark and then come in just before dawn and the influx of boaters.  One morning, after loading up and heading down Rt 18 we realized we left my two new double coleman lanterns on the dock.  We would always take them out of the boat to cool while we loaded up.  Anyway, went back to the dock and sure enough, they were gone.
But not the end of the story....   We noticed that there were two "fresh" wet tracks that went from the water up to a truck and empty trailer.  The only vehicles in the lot!!!  At the time I worked in Sharon and my HR manager had connections with Sharon PD.  They ran the plate numbers and they came back to a small business owner in West Middlesex.   Well, my buddy and I go to visit him and sure enough, on his counter, cleaned up and minus the silver foil that I used to keep the back light from blinding us in the boat, were my two lanterns.  Only $25 each!!!  The guy said he didn't use them anymore and was selling them.
Using great patience, I explained to him that those were my lanterns, and how I had tracked them down to him.
He thought for awhile and said well since he found them and cleaned them up he would only charge me $10 each.
I  Told him that since he said he was selling them because he didn't use them anymore we would be taking them for free.
Got my lanterns back!

We were fishing the tubes on Elk years back. Guy near me starts swearing and yelling, he's all ticked off. Seems he brought 2 rods that day to fish with and had leaned one along a tree near the bank trail. We'll, while he had waded out in the creek fishing someone walking by had helped themselves to his fly rod !

Wow ....how low can some people be ! Slick too !

Sounds like that same dude made his rounds back then !

Lost- The thieves that got me Erie fishing weren't as slick. Actually rather crude..... they smashed out my rear Blazer window and emptied it out.

State Police said that's a common move on fishermen who travel far from their vehicles to fish!

Had an experience a couple years before the great lantern caper.  Same buddy and I are spring turkey hunting and are set to go trout fishing in the afternoon at Salmon run.  After hunting, my friend said he didn't feel so hot and was going to crash in the back seat and join me later.
About an hour into his nap he heard some odd noises to find someone trying to run a hanger down the window of the car to break in!   Imagine their surprise when my buddy emerges from under hunting clothes in the back seat clutching his 12ga (albeit unloaded) shotgun!
To this day my bud swears he heard the guy fill his pants then turn and run to his car.   Sorry I missed that one....
