Opinions Needed!

Wow is that ever a lethal title for a thread on a fishing forum!!
I'm looking for opinions on mooring a boat at Pymatuning for the season.  I have the opportunity to get a slip at the new Linesville Marina.  I would like others' thoughts and concerns.
Has anyone every kept their boat in the water for an entire season?  Drawbacks?
I know I will pretty much have to drag everything in and out of the boat every time.  My biggest question is how do you keep it covered while it is moored in the slip.
I drive about 70 miles or so to the marina, so it would help not towing it every time.  Fishing by myself might be a little easier considering there would be no issue with trailering the boat   I could pop in and out anytime without worrying about crowds or lines.
OK, let me here it!!

Find a reputable dealer that handles boat covers and talk to them about "mooring covers". Not to be confused with towing or trailering covers which are available as a combination and can be used for both.

Mooring covers generally uses snaps and towing may be tied.

Seriously Opsman, talk to a professional first. Mooring with the wrong cover will be PITA.

If ya don't mind me asking, what is the rate for mooring?

Ops I would also recommend using adjustable post type of supports. The bow style ribs suck and webbing support is a royal PITA trying to cover a boat in the water.

Don't forget a working bilge pump also.

BTDT  I have a snap cover that was custom made when i bought the boat new.  Also have three poles that go thru grommeted holes  Same for the bow cleat and side cleats.  Just wondered if anyone has ever covered a boat while in the water.  I figured i could snap one whole side, get out of the boat and snap the remaining side.  Lol, in theory it sounds easy, but just wondered about the reality part!!
Since my boat is under 17' its $665, but that's only because I'm not a resident of Pa.  Seems like a lot, but when you divide that by seven months its only about $90 a month, $20 a week! lol.  The spot available is only about ten slips from shore and its right next to the boat house, so its not like it's an outward slip

You'll need a button down or velcro style mooring cover.  That Conneaut boat cover, Amish family seems to be a huge favorite on the site.  Custom fit, so you aren't getting water in your boat.

Make sure your hull is water tight.  I don't trust mine, aluminum rivet construction.  It usually doesn't have any water in it, when I moor it for 4-5 days, but not sure if that would be the same for all of the time.  You can get an automatic bilge pump with a float, and run a solar panel to trickle charge your battery.  If not, then you'll likely want to pull your batteries after every use, and probably your depth finder and anything else that is easily removed and worth anything.  People are idiots, so you need to account for that.

I personally just keep my boat close to the lake in storage.  So, I end up doing about the same pulling of certain things that go home with me in my truck and need to remember on every trip as if I moored.  It's a lot cheaper than mooring, but takes 15 minutes before and after every trip.  Mooring is still going to take 5 minutes or so.  It saves wear and tear on my vehicle, and space on my driveway/garage, which is why I really do it.  I don't have a custom fit cover or auto bilge.  So if mooring for a few days, and it rains hard, it's in there until I bilge it out.

It would be nice to just get there and go.  If it makes sense, then it would be great.  I can't justify the additional cost, of getting a boat that I would trust and mooring cost.

Ops in my book you got the "cats meow" in mooring covers. Very easy to start on one side and with just a few snaps place each support into place as you go.

Trick is to fold the cover as you uncover so you can lay out the the cover as you recover the boat.

I find it easier to start with the front working my way toward the back.

Practice from inside while your boat is on the trailer.

Just don't forget you are not in the water and step out onto the dock. lol.... Ummm sorry.

Yep  I'll keep that in mind.  I don't know if I will look into a float switch for the bilge pump or not.  The raised floor is prolly a couple inches off the keel.  I'm pretty  sure that cover would keep 99% of the rain out.  Since the slip is close to the boat house, it's not a far walk from the parking space.  Two trips and Im sure I could have everything in the boat.  With two people, maybe just one trip   Really kicking this around...just not positive yet

Will there be a fuel pump at the Marina and how much fuel might they be selling? Would imagine the fuel won't be gasohol but it can still get nasty if it sits in a tank over time.

Having to walk to a boat slip helps prevent taking all that gear you probably won't use anyway. lol

No it wasn't.  The question was not " WHAT do I use to cover my boat"  It was "HOW do I cover my boat", implying that some sort of cover will be utilized, just how should it be utilized.  Obviously, the fact that a cover would be used was implied.
You can look that up if you like, but I've spent a few years dabbling in English and Journalism.  Those aren't my weak spots, just mooring boats!  lol

opsman,
Your cover looks fine mooring is the way to go,im in b38 at Linesville the only drawback is the funk that gets on the bottom of the boat needs cleaned ith slimy grimey or another boat bottom cleaner. I have to pull my boat out every couple months and clean and charge my batteries back up. Believe me the circus at the Linesville launch is bad and to be able to avoid is worth any price. Also if your drining 70 miles to marina you will save enough in gas to pay for your mooring. Any more questions PM me ok.

I never heard of hardly any incidents at the Jamestown Marina with docked boats over the years. Pulling batteries every trip would be a pain. I'd pull the electronics for sure. Got to be a way to lock the batteries in if one was worried. I believe there are cameras set up at Jamestown Marina..... not positive.
That cover should keep all the rain water out.....mine sits out all Summer in the driveway not a drop gets in.

Op's ,you should have pole vents put in the 3 pole areas, that black cover has to hold a lot of heat in.
They would help vent some heat out on those hot sunny days. Got them on my new boat cover two years ago. Something to keep in mind.

Thanks guys.  That's what i'm looking for.  Pros and cons from past experiences.  Ice Nut, we will be neighbors almost...Mines B18.  Of course I still have one more hurdle to jump through.  Since that will be my primary lake of use I will be required to register my boat in PA.  Don't know how that works when I live in Ohio!!
O.D.  Yeah, I figured I would take everything out of the boat except of course the motor.  Wasn't too sure about the battery yet.  I will probably come up with some kind of rolling cart/contraption so I can pretty much wheel any heavy stuff out all at once.
Ice, I have a starter battery and a Deep well Marine Battery, so I guess I could just switch them up every so often and take the other home to charge...

D, I saw that suggestion somewhere else.  Is that your rig?  How does it work.  Was even thinking if it got to be a pain in the **** snapping the cover on the dock side I could cheat with those!

Icenut has a good point. Whatever you see growing on submerged rocks, logs, etc. you're gonna find growing on the bottom of your boat.

I had a slip at Wilhelm where I docked my 16' Starcraft back in the late 70s early 80s.

When I pulled my boat from the water in Oct. WOW I bout popped my pants. Thought my boat was ruined.

That's when I discovered a product called "Star Brite Hull Cleaner" that is available at WalMart and I imagine other places. It's a oxalic acid so not recommended for washing your boat inside a garage. But the stuff do work.

Another great product to clean scum from boats is "Screen Door Cleaner" which can be found in some hardware stores. Used for cleaning aluminium screen doors which contains hydrofloric acid. Also recommended to be used in a well ventilated area.

In both cases "read and follow the directions before buying"

BTDT, yeah, I already have a few items I got from Overtons that I use.  I remember reading on the "weeds" thread that they are going to put in boat washing stations at Espyville and Linesville or am I mistaken.  That would be pretty cool, cause you could go up one time a month with the trailer, just pull the boat out, wash er down, put her back in the slip and go home!
