heavy fluorocarbon leaders

I am going to build some leaders with 80-130 pound fluorocarbon.  Input on size welcome too.

I want to do up a dozen or so about a foot long, with a heavy barrel on one end, and a heavy snap swivel on the other.

Do you knot these, crimp them, knot/crimp/glue?

I haven't had a knot fail yet, but they all look like they want to.

What do you guys do?

I use clinch knots with less turns than I would if it was, say 10 lb mono.  Only 3 turns, instead of 5 or 6.  I use spit & pliers to get the knot seated & tight.  Then, if feeling extra motivated, I'll add a dab of clear cure goo flex over the knot & cure.

Don't listen to Raz, use knot-able wire for musky.  haha

This is what I use for everything 50lb and heavier. Never had a problem and locks down tight.

That heavy, I'd go with a crimp. especially if there's already gonna be hardware on each end. Once you get over 50 or 60 lb, knots can be a pain to get tight enough. But you already know that.

This is what I have been doing for the most part, minus the ccg.  I used heavy leather gloves on the line side to pull it tight, pliers on the swivels.  I can just picture that line slicing me to the bone.  I have used that bead-a-lon wire before, which may or may not be the same as the knot-able stuff, but it is also a little bit of a b*tch to tie with.  Like I said, I haven't had one fail yet, but they always look a little suspicious.  I would just hate to see one fail when I need it the most.  I have bought the eagle claw wire leaders before, but they are so shiny, the fly looks like a blinged out narwhal coming through the water.

I like the video, I am going to give them a try, it looks pretty simple.

Crimping was going to be my last resort.  I assume you both have some experience in this.  I have read online about it on some saltwater forums, but I am beyond ignorant when it comes to this kind of thing.  The double barrel crimps are pretty cheap in themselves, but would I need to invest in special crimpers?  Would my electrician crimpers work?  A lot of the saltwater guys suggest knot AND crimp.  Probably an equal amount of anti crimping guys claim that inexperienced crimpers (ME) weaken the line/wire too much by crimping too hard, or they leave them too loose and they slip.  Do you guys have any pictures or personal suggestions you would like to share?

    I assume you're making these for muskies/pike?

I bought a crimp kit at a tackle shop in SC, but the crimper was pretty much the same as electric crimpers I used so wouldnt see why it wont work. Tomato, tomatoe

I often make shark leaders, and just crimped them never had to tie a knot, but i do add a drop or two of clear gloo flex just outta extra security sake. Then test each one by putting the hook in a vice, put a metal rod threw the swivel hole and pull the chit out of it. So far never had one crimp fail on the 3'-8' surf sharks.

Just kinda a trial and error til you get the feel of how hard you should crimp it. As long as you test it first and doesnt slip itll hold.

Yeah, for musky fishing.  It isn't like I am a guide or anything and blow through five a day, but I want to make a few extras, and maybe do a couple sizes/styles.  Stealth makes them, but they are kind of pricey, and I kind of just want to make them myself.

I am probably going to give all these options a go to be honest.  The knots I tie weigh on my mind when I fish because they all look kind of crappy.  I haven't lost one due to a bad knot(lets not talk about hooksets).  I just wanted to ask you guys, to see what you do.  I was actually really hoping you would reply, I know you target heavy fish, in turn, would know about heavy line termination.

Post some shark pics when you get a chance.

I'm going to try Tim's knot he posted earlier going forward.  I just use 2 feet of 60-80 lb fluoro or mono looped to 18" of rio knottable wire & I clinch knot a swivel onto the wire.  Hasn't failed, but I know what you mean about knots looking sketchy.

Thinking back, I suggested crimps because that's the conclusion my dad came to for his shark rigs after a bunch of research. I fished with a tarpon guide last year (my dad's neighbor) that said he uses a uni knot (100lb leader to hook) exclusively. I can attest to its strength, as I straightened a7/0 hook on a fish. From personal experience, I use a Palomar for my flathead leaders, but they dont go over 60lb test. I find it the easiest to get tight, and they seem to stay tight.

Indeed.  But when a big ski eventually bites you off with stainless steel hooks in its mouth, you better not tell me about it because I'll never let you forget it could have been prevented by using wire.

I made mine with few feet of 50# then a foot of 20# for a break and 18-20in of rio tie wire I just twisted it and hit it with a lighter its crazy strong I was skeptical about just that but it didn't break can use heat shrink tube over it as well

I'd rather be lucky then good, but im to good to be lucky

FWIW I tried Tim's knot last night a few times...  It worked great, simple as can be, and it seemed really strong, and it looked really good and tight when I was finished.  I didn't try it on bead-a-lon, or heavy fluorocarbon, but with 50 pound mono it was pretty sweet.
