Noodle rods for other fish besides steel

I've searched the site for a couple of opinions but couldn't get a solid answer. Does anyone use one for trout fishing? Panfish? And if so what length and action/power, im assuming light action with moderate power would be good for anything from steelhead to using on stocked trout and wading for panfish

Been brought up a few times by Old Dog/Rapala 11 (might wanna search) with lots of good discussion.

I have an 8' and 9' noodle rod I use for just about everything but throwing big lures for bass. Love it for wading for panfish. Love it for fishing local trout cricks and lakes. Even use it for channel cats and carp sometimes just cause it's fun.

The big advantage as I see it when fishing lakes is that it lets you fish with a bobber set at good depths for suspending pan fish and trout. Really hard to cast accurately with a 6'6" rod with your bobber set more than 2' deep. I use weighted cigar floats and you can cast small baits or light jigs a mile.

Here is a rather recent thread.  Definitely can be used.  I use for all sorts of fish.  They seem to have advantages and disadvantages as R2 noted above, and discussed in link below.  If planning to buy one, and just wondering if it is only good for steelhead.  They are good for a lot more, pick one up!  I get that way when making a decision on buying some sort of "special" use equipment, I usually find multiple uses.  If you have one already and just curious, take it out (as a second rod) and give it a try.  If not good, then you know, and have your standard rod there too.  If good, it might turn into your go to for certain types of fishing.  Mine has seen a lot more non-steelhead fishing than steelhead fishing over the past 7-8 years.

Noodle rods are usually light with fast action. My bro caught about a 30 in musky on his noodle rod it brought the fish in just fine just have to play with the fish a little more. Plus I think the 9 ft helped, it acts like a spring. Don't be afraid to use one. Just don't have your drag tighten all the way. It will snap just like any other rod.

I used my 10' noodle for stocked trout all winter,it gives me a nice range of depth for my jigging bobber and trout worm on a jig head. Also use from shore fishing for panfish, love the long casts and I can control feisty bull gills and crappie around brush. Also use at Pymy spillway for eyes, you need the rod length at that zoo.

I have a 10 ft. ultra light noodle rod that I use regularly for carp at some of my local lakes. The rod is like a buggy whip and I used it for steelhead many years ago but found it too cumbersome to use in crowded conditions so I use it for carp in more open waters. Even a small 4-6 pound carp is a challenge, but hook into a ten plus pounder and you have a marathon fight on your hands. In my opinion it would not be very good in situations where you need to exert much control of a large fish.

Thanks for the replies fellas! Definitely wanna get one and try it out, i love using longer rods, especially fishing in moving water for jigging and drifting, keeps a lot of slack line out of the water. Now which rod to get haha, dont wanna break the bank on one, something 100 or less

I have noodle rods varying from 9-11'.  They get use wading for panfish in lakes to trout fishing the yough or larger rivers.  Can't beat a longer rod for the perfect drift.

I have this one in 8' and 9' https://www.fishusa.com/product/Pinnacle-Vertex-IM7-Noodle-Rods

Think they're 4 or 5 years old now.  Absolutely no issues with them.  Not the best rod you can buy, but definitely in your $100 or less category and pretty tough rods so far.

Okuma makes some great lower priced rods.  I have been happy with everything that I own by Okuma.  My Shakespeare Agility rod works just fine too.

One thing that I'd pay close attention to, is the butt of the rod.  I would not go with an Okuma Celilo, although a great rod and I love mine for the applications that I use it for.  They have the longer fighting butts.  Great for landing large fish or using as a lighter offering surf rod, and able to put it under your arm for support for both.  The longer butt is horrible for how I live line, where the really short butt of my Agility is ideal.  That long butt gets in the way when jigging too.  Just something to consider when purchasing.
