Arthur walleye in November
It's been a heck of a fall and haven't been to Arthur since September. Anybody think it might be worth a shot this weekend? Don't want to waste my time but would like to give the season a final hurrah. Just got my trolling setup completed and was thinking of dragging some harnesses and crankbaits along the roadbed.

I seem to have just as much chance catching them on my coach... Saturday should have a nice "walleye chop" and wind should probably push you fast enough to troll without your motor. From what I understand, guys do pull walleye out of the lake. I only seem to catch them when focusing on wipers though. I should probably "focus on wipers" every time out then... I too just upgraded some of my trolling gear. I was thinking to head out on Saturday, but I really hate fishing in 20 MPH wind. Granted, I could deal with it if catching, but that is part of why I hate fishing in 20 MPH wind!!!

I wonder if there is a 'night bite' for eyes on arthur in the late fall like there is a lot of other places?

Beagle - Did you get out over the weekend? I was out on Saturday. Lockjaw was the theme. Sounded to be the same with anyone else we talked to. My guess is they did not adjust from the few days in the 80s, then cold front that pushed through on Thursday. Things have stabilized since then and through Friday, then conveniently the floor drops right before the weekend for us working folks... Marked a ton of fish and bait balls, but just not interested in half of the tackle box that I tossed at them.

Marked lots of fish on the roadbed. No walleye or wipers but found some slabs in 15-18 fow on small firetiger crankbaits. Just a few but nice size.

Morning was calm but wind had really picked up by noon. Boat control was becoming an issue so I was off the water at 1PM.

I hate to ask this but what are "Wipers" I live 2 miles from Lake Arthur and have only fished it 2 -3 times in 23 years. Am I missing something. I love fishing Erie. Fish-on

Hybrid stripers. Cross between a striper and white bass. The primary sport fish in Arthur and loads of fun to catch.

Definitely not worth the 2 mile trip... Mine is about 50 mile trip, crossing through downtown Pgh. My favorite fish to catch. If I lived 2 miles from Arthur, I'd likely have issues with my employment and marriage...

Mine too. Once my kids are out of school, I just need to decide either fresh water or salt water. I'm leaning salt water. Semi-retire working 20 hours per week during the summer at a bait shop near the beach would be just fine with me. Have the spring and fall off, during the better fishing times. I might go play the lottery today and make it happen sooner!

I am retired and have a nicely loaded 18ft Larson that i am in the process of putting a Minna Kota Ultrerra 112 volt on with I-Pilot link so I can troll up Pyme and Erie. I guess I have been missing the boat by not using my home town lake. Can I get some advise on the places to start fishing the " Deed Sea" as the locals call it Thanks, Tom

First off, Pymie and Erie are better lakes, for catching. Arthur is a very hit or miss lake. Being that it is an hour for me (and 2.5 million others) to get to (without traffic), where the others are 2+, it is a lot easier to do a day trip to Arthur than Pymie or Erie. Also, my boat is on the very low end of Erie worthy, and after taking the 50hp off, I wouldn't think to take out on the big lake. With an 18' boat, you are limited to a few launches. Bear Run, McDaniels and Davis Hollow are the three deepest. The others, depending on water level, might be an issue. Right now, the lake is a bit low, and many docks are being pulled, so probably would stick with one of those 3 until spring. Spring and Fall, like any lake, stream, river in this area, are going to be the more productive times. Right now, the pan fish are usually pretty active, but depends on the winds. I am yet to find an accurate wind forecast for Arthur. Accuweather, Weatherunderground, you name it. They will call for 5MPH and gusts of 10MPH from the S at Portersville, then get on the lake, and is sustained 15-20MPH, and somehow changes direction as soon as you find a place to hide from it... Fishing with a bobber in 15-20MPH winds, the fish better be taking it all of the way under. Kind of hard to fish the weeds without a bobber for me. Other days, the lake is flat as glass, and usually the best days for pan fishing for me. You can see every little half take, and often catch fish that weren't really committed to your offering. The walleye on Arthur, for me, are bi-catches. I've tried targeting them many times, and come up with a skunk or channel cat or other non-walleye. The wipers are a bit more predictable, and will at times, end up with a walleye as a surprise. All larger fish for me at least, are easiest to catch during the alewive spawn. Do a search on this site for a ton of info. You can get some easier during the summer, but plan on keeping, as they do not tolerate being caught from deeper water and released in 80 degree water very well. Personally, if I lived 2 miles away, I'd know the lake like the back of my hand by now (Crappiefisher). When you do that, you will figure out just about every seasonal movement. What weather patterns seem to work the best, ect. For me, I get a break from work, kids, wife, kids sports, house work, ect. maybe 1-2 days per month. If I am lucky, I get a client in the area, and able to fish a few hours. So, I go when there is an opening, 80% of those times, the conditions are not ideal. That all said, if you live 2 miles from Arthur, you are an hour from Pymie, which holds much larger crappie and much more willing walleye.

Porktown - My Dad, Brother and I targeted walleyes on Arthur and had success by trolling harnesses where shallow meets deep and on the old roadbed. My Dad passed and my Brother is disabled leaving me to fish alone. You mentioned in your post that you had clients from time to time. Do you guide on the 3 rivers? I live in Springdale about 3 miles from lock 3 on the Allegheny. Drop me a message. I'm interested.

Paul - Not a guide. I was referring to just work clients in general. If I ever get any work remotely close to Arthur, I'll swing by the lake, instead of sit in traffic on the way home. A little hard to do now with the clocks changing.

How long ago was that Pauleye? Within the last few years? I moved here from the south a few years ago and have been stoked to catch walleye. Unfortunately they seem to be the one fish I can't catch(legal size at least). I know Arthur isn't the best walleye fishery but I know they are in there. Will have to try crawler harnesses. Of course archery season is here so this will probably wait until spring. I'm feeling good about my first legal walleye in '17. Of course I said that last year as well.

SpreadEagleBeagle - It has been 5 or 6 years ago. The harnesses we used were made by Bear Paw and had a series of silver Colorado blades separated by red beads. They were killers on Arthur and also on Chautauqua in New York, with a few bass and musky thrown in. We used them about 18 to 24 inches behind drop weights (1/4 to 1 oz.). We also jigged silver Cicadas on the old road bed in Arthur (usually in late Fall). My Brother's friend caught the biggest walleye I've seen taken on the lake. It was 30 1/2 inches long and weighed 9 pounds, taken on the Bear Paw harness. Good luck!!!!!

Fished today, screen was black with fish at times. So thick, my sonar mistook the top of the schools as the bottom. Couldn't convince a single one to bite... We got a few small ones to save a skunk, but nothing targeting the eyes/wipers.

PT that is brutal ...frustrating too, when the screen lights up. Wonder what they hit on??? bc they sure as hell can't all be shad. I want to get out and fish this super moon at night. Maybe they're hitting after dusk.
