interesting read

While reading a 1993 issue of "Sports Afield" that I found to-day I read the results of that year's fishing contest winners. For  Musky in the Adult winner was an 38# fish from Lake Shawnee in Bedford Cnty, in the walleye category was an 13# 9oz eye from Greenlick in Fayette cnty, & a 2# 14oz white bass from the Ohio river near Monaca. I was surprised that they had that many winners from this area.  sam

Old Dog, After reading your post you make me feel like I'm ancient history! I'm not sure when "Pymie" was first impounded but I know I fished the lake with my father around 1963 or so. It wasn't a swamp then. I remember my Dad catching a walleye close to 30." At that time bait casters with fiberglass rods were used along with the infamous "Mitchell 300" spin cast. I started fishing when I was six and that was 1957. I'm old, but the memories are like they just happened yesterday. And the "fish stories" get better each time I repeat them! Lou

Rich, In the early 60's the Mitchell 300 was definitely king around our area. I did use a steel rod & bait casting reel, I don't remember even using leaders. I occasionaly still catch fish on the lures of the day such as red & white daredevils, joe's flies,C.P. swings & flatfish to name a few. I used to catch doubles on Smallmouth bass in the Allegheny near Tidiute more often than not.As Lou stated the larger lakes held a lot of big fish because we didn't have the modern equipment that is available to-day. I really think that fishing & hunting was more fun without all of our " STAR War" equip. that we have now. I do know that there was a lot less greed & self back patting & more willingness to help others then IMO.  sam

One thing about the 60's, there wasn't much talk about catch and release. In those days there were no food stamps or EBT cards. Other than a Government Surplus food distribution to the needy most people used those fish to supplement their food supply. I remember my grandmother cleaning bluegills and perch and actually eating them for breakfast. We would catch these at a sportsman club outside of Zelie.  Lou

Rich, Don't forget tho that money was harder to come by then. In 1966 I got married at the age of 19 & was raising a family on $1.65 an hr. Funny thing is that you can buy Mith.300's now for not a lot more  sam
