lake Donegal

Just came back from the lake.I didn't fish I was just looking around & was surprised at how deep the shoreline was near Hyatts cove. Looked like about a 45% angle, much too rough for me now. I would say that the lake is about 1/2 down. There were a couple of guys out earlier in a small boat duck hunting, but it looks very rough to get a trailer down the ramp. Good opportunity for yaks & canoes. Not a lot of shoreline for us old goats for sure. Almost no access from the side opposite the boat ramps. I watched some young guys catching 10" bass & putting them in a bucket to stock somewhere else. Lot of fish rising mostly small. Also saw a few nice carp jumping, but no -one fishing for them. It is worth a visit.  sam

I drove over today to see how the draw down was going and the lake is lower than I have ever seen it.  I doubt there is any way a boat could be launched unless you are very brave.   I talked to a fisherman who said the fish recovery is scheduled for next Wed. and Thurs. but have no idea if that is correct.

Probably 10 fisherman at various spots.

If I think of it I will call or stop into the southwestern office at Lake Somerset and ask to be sure.  If I remember I'll post the answer here.  Should be interesting to watch.

I stopped out to the Fish Commission office at Lake Somerset and they confirmed the fish recovery is scheduled for the 25th and 26th.  The man said 10:00 both days.

They suggested if you want to help carry fish bring rain gear and waders.

He also said Lake Somerset will not be started till next year.   Not sure if that means spring or fall or sometime in between.

    Dave
I read somewhere that the Somerset Lake fish salvage would be sometime next fall.  Don't know how long it will take to drain the lake or when they would have to start.   I also heard that the new spillway would be where the fishing pier is now.  That would eliminate the deepest part of the lake.  How would that work?  Did anyone hear this?

The only thing better than 1 day of fishing is 2 days of fishing.

George:   I didn't ask anything else about Somerset but the person did say they probably could not do the fish recovery on Somerset below the auxiliary discharge as the area was to small.  I understood him to mean they would have to do it within the lake itself once it got low enough.

On the news last week they showed them recovering fish from a lake in Jefferson county below the auxiliary spillway.  It looks like Donegal will be done the same way.

Where are the fish going? High point? I've also wondered what they'll do with the bowfin in Somerset... relocate them to where they aren't or let them die and rot?

Stopped at Donegal Wednesday evening, caught a nice carp and a few bass. Water was down 10 ft at least. What surprised me is the total lack of structure in that lake. Other than a tire down by the dam and a few old stumps there really is no structure. Hopefully before the lake is refilled they can install some fish cribs and a few catfish nesting boxes.

Any idea on the bowfin? I've always wanted to catch one. That dream may be lost soon. I'd hope they would restock them at least.

Ryan, When I talked to the Deputy, He told me that they were going to use a lot of the debris from the dam when they dismantle it to make rock piles & humps in the lake. Also they got a grant from Mellons & 2 or 3 other organizations to put cribs etc. in the lake also they are supposed to map the lake. I offered to make 2doz. catfish nesting boxes, but never heard back from them. I hope this rain doesn't affect the schedule too much, although I am not sure if I personally will be able to fish there again due to my health.I plan to be there when they try netting those fish out just to see the size of some of those Crappie that are in there. Hint! Did you see those small stumps fields across the lake? Pretty tough to fish them from shore.    sam

I drove back over to Donegal Sunday morning and was surprised how much water is still in the lake.  I'm guessing the lake still runs up to at least the bait shop on the way into the main launch.  I have no idea how deep the lake still is but as fast as the one side drops off I would guess there must be close to 10 foot of water left at places.

I would assume a large portion of the fish will not be coming thru the spillway Tues. or Wed.  Maybe they will do the salvage over a month or two period?

Hope to drive over to watch tomorrow.

I just got word to-day that the PF&BC postponed the salvage operation until Nov. 1rst & 2nd at 10am. don't know why,I am assuming it is because of the past rain.  sam

We were there today observing.I was amazed at the number of fish that were taken & also  how many were going downstream into 4 mile. I saw multiple 4-6# bass & a lot of big cats also. There were a couple of 25-28" walleye & saw Crappie up to 18". Although a lot of smaller fish died,I will say that the workers & helpers worked their butts off while I was there.   sam

Too bad 4 mile really isnt big/deep enough to sustain those fish.

never know. Guy told me last week he caught a 28 inch rainbow out of Indian creek. We all know the pressure that creek faces. And the game commish only puts in 12 inchers. That fish was living in the shallows for a couple years

I heard from a deputy that besides all of the bass & panfish & Cats that they only netted 1 smaller Musky 3 big walleyes & only a couple of Trout. He told me that the water reached about 87% & that he thought that most of the Trout died.    sam

I used to fish Donegal a lot as a kid, but it's been probably 25 years since I fished there.  How deep were the deepest parts of that lake?  I remember most of it being fairly shallow once you got away from the dam.

rsquared, Parts around the dam were approx.25-28' deep on the boat ramp side. You should take a ride out there to look around. I was most surprised at how close to shore the creek bed is.  sam

I talked to a guy who was up there when they removed the fish. He said they dug a hole and buried all the carp they caught. He said it was disgusting watching them flopping around until dead. Can anyone confirm this?

They do that at every lake they drain like that.
