is it "worth it".....

I'm always amused by that perennial  question
I think anyone that asks that should give specific perimeters of what makes it worth it or not to them personally

I started this thread because I'm sitting here  wondering if I want to make the  time and spend the $125 or so it will cost for license, gas and pops/snacks  for a jaunt up Monday or Tuesday to wet a line and look around

funny thing is...I'd be having the same thoughts if there were 100 fish or 100,000 fish

sure..as long as all ten aren't in the Stop Sign hole

It's  more about the travel time involved for the water time really.
all the abuse I've put my body thru during my knucklehead dayz has caught up with me.
at 58, I'm pretty beat up
i can only "enjoy" a few hours creek  time...so the 3.5 to 4 hours rnd trip travel time weighs in picture

if i lived 30 minutes away, I'd of been up a dozen times by now

Agreed, people need to take in the whole picture not just one little section.. after all, you drive/fly hours to go on a vacation, spending lots of money..you don't just go there for one reason. You go there for family, comraderie and the overall experience.

So.. if you go to Erie with say, an aging father... you saying it wasn't worth making a trip out of it is borderline insane.. time moves fast if you have a small window to slow it down and be on the water with family and friends.... DO IT. Fish catching will come in time. Tight lines are nice, but slowing down our hourglass sands every now and then is under appreciated. Little or No fish + quality time is still greater than you or them being 6 ft under regretting not making that trip anywhere.

If you go up and there's tons of fish, fun will be had.. if you go up and there's no fish, you'll have some unexpected free time to relax as long as YOU make the most of it:

Am fortunate enough to live about three hours away. Been comin mup for over 20 years and have had everything from over 100 fish days, to skunkings, as well as days where I got up, found everything blown out, so I canceled the hotel room, turned around and drove all the way back home.  I can say that every trip has been worth it.

Let's see, what makes it "worth it," you ask?

    - The drive up on 80 to 79 up through the picturesque Clarion and Allegheny River gorges, admiring the fall foliage.

    - Having a shot at good numbers of big, aggressive fish that you can find from Labor Day through Easterish. It's true that things may be slow by Erie standards the past couple of years, but I've still had some great days.

    - Some wonderful food, at Avonia Tavern, Teresa's, or Freeport, or even one of the i90 pizza delivery places

    - Getting a hotel room, and getting away from it all at home and work for a few days.

    - The Christmas not being able to sleep feeling the night before.

Is it worth it to me personally? Any more not really.

    - I fish to catch fish. Steelies are pretty dumb, and they are something different to fish for in the fall. But I can catch big fish locally and have most of the lakes to myself.

    - Cost to go fish bathtubs. I got a 2.5 hour drive north. Roughly $150 for gas, turnpike fees, food/drinks (to Erie and back home total). Its not gonna bankrupt me in the slightest but money could be put to other things.

    - I remember the "epic" runs and how much fun it was. Nows its less fish and more people. Its not fun when the crowds are everywhere even at the lesser known areas.

-To touch on a previous post... Avonia sucks (ate there twice food wasnt really fresh) , Teresa's is ok the nightmare is a nightmare coming out though LOL.

-What happened to the hot chicks in Erie they die off? Saved money on hotels...Use to score chicks at the bars, got free room an poon, then smell like skank the next day.

Yet I still run on up for a day trip or two, hammer a bunch on jigs or globugs call them dumfezh, make fun of mupheres in orange jumpsuits with neoprene waders smeared with skank and powrbates. It is what it is but not like how it use to be..

Well, I might as well start the discussion.

While I do appreciate all the things the previous posters have written, and I do enjoy all the elements of a day outdoors while hunting and fishing, I must state that I go hunting to shoot things and fishing to catch things.

There is too little time in my world to, for lack of a better term, "waste" traveling to hunt or fish when the conditions do not dictate a high possibility for catching or shooting.

Case in point, I go to the Keys near the end of June, which seems counterintuitive, but that is when the tarpon migrate. The Keys are just as beautiful in February and it would be nice to get away from a PA winter for a while, but I go there to catch tarpon and that just isn't happening then. Yes, I enjoy all the other stuff, but that's not the purpose for the trip.

I'm not heading to Erie for steelhead unless conditions dictate that I have a good shot at a double digit catch day or series of days. If that isn't in the cards, I'll take the birddogs hunting or head to the Juniata to catch 50-100 smallmouth bass. The scenery is just as nice.

I spent too many years fishing bass tournaments that required that I fish under unfavorable conditions to do it now. I just as happy to reduce the number of trips hunting and fishing by 50-75%, to be highly successful when I do go.

The poster formally known as Duncsdad

Everything I say can be fully substantiated by my own opinion.

sometimes for me fishing in erie is a lot of nonsense... seems as if when you think you've seen it all someone is more stupid and more ignorant than the person before... entertaining tho...

I look at the gauges every half hour, calculate the waters drop, and already have the car packed and time table drawn up..hasn't failed me before why would it this time

Does Raccoon still have that big fallen tree across the creek? I remember hearing the PAFBC or DCNR was going to make the landowner have it moved. That was around 2014, considering the speed of government...I figure it should be done by 2018.

Dispite all the trolling, over the top, and sarcastic stuff ive posted on here over the years you honestly have a 1 to 2 day time window to fish decent flows after a blow out. Very hard to plan a trip up here.

No water in the ground yet so this blowout everyones all excited about over the last 2 days is already down and will be a trickle by morning.

Now enjoy a powerbait sub from theresa's deli little nooby
