This time of year I keep some bait on hand. 20 gallon storage bin, aerator and filter in the garage will keep minnows alive if temps don't get too warm. In 2-3 weeks, temps are even better. Got to scoop the floaters out every day, bury them in the garden or salt and freeze. Crawlers are even easier.
Inland lake bait shop owner, is not an easy way to make money. The guys are basically doing it as a favor to anglers. I can see the BAC, Pour Richard's and beach bait shops making some decent money. To wake up at 5AM to sell $10 worth of bait, and get $3-4 profit, then nothing for 2-3 hours, is not something I'd be interested in...
