major steelhead run coming
it is currently poring down rain right now. It has been raining like this for a few hours straight now. the creeks will be semi-high the steelhead are most likely going to start a major run. meaning a lot of fish are going to be in the mouth of most creeks. good luck! stay safe, fish on!

what makes you think that, Nick? do you think rain triggers "major" runs like most others do? been my observations over the years, rain/hi-water triggers movement up stream, but not so much waves of fish from the lake (this assuming there's enough water at the mouths for them to enter before a heavy rain) I know that's contrary to what most think, but fish filter in more or less every night from now til mid/late October Rain or shine, by Nov 1 the majority of runs are in the creeks ..L.T.A.

okay your right but if the fish cant get in to the creeks because the water is to low in the front of the mouth there not going to be able to get in. the fish will realize that the water is high and will come into the creeks im saying more fish will come in after a heavy rain fall like this. then when its harder to come in.

The other issue to consider is the lake temperature, around 68 is often considered the magic number for number of fish to stage near the trib mouths. Since the lake temp is above 70 at one of the latest dates ever, the run is behind schedule this year. The cool temperatures this week, combined with the rain to open the mouths up, should help push some more fish in.

Somehow those two catch way more fish than most of us, way before it's on. I wish my great days were as good as their OK/average days.
That said I heard there have been hundreds coming into lower 20 Mile this morning and just sitting in the lower pools. 4&16 Mile are loaded now too. Bring yer sacks and ropes boys! The East Side is on fire!

I put the boat in yesterday and just had to laugh at the few fisherman harassing the 5 fish that were stuck at the stop sign hole.

I went up north this past weekend to check out some spots I fish (lots of them got filled in with rocks) and to fish... There were 3 fish in Trout run on Sunday. No fish caught at the lake, no fish seen jumping out in the lake. No pods of fish moving up / down @ Walnut as the past 3-4 years this time of year. No sign of fish @ Elk Creek near the mud hole. So, I don't think one rain storm is going to bring in a "massive run" of fish. Looks like a later start this year.... or maybe something else? I did see someone vandalized the sign @ Trout Run - "Why are there so many Steelhead in this creek?" to Why are there NOT so many steelhead in this creek... I had a little laugh at that... because its true.

Nope these insane reports need to stop..guys work hard for their money and vacation time to go fish I think there needs to be a thread on tips on how to be self sufficient in knowing if it's worth coming from hours away without having to rely on these untrue reports I live 3 hours away and with the scroll of a few apps and previous knowledge I knew I wasn't using a vacation day to come chase these "100s" of fish in the "major run" does someone tell you when you need to go to the bathroom too?

This time of year, it's rather simple, however this year is unique, since the lake temperatures are still very high for this time of year, so things are behind schedule. Generally, will there be some fish around? Yes? Will anybody who knows what they're doing with a jig, wooly bugger, single egg, etc, be able to catch some (anybody who watched my video from the weekend can see that I had one bolt from the pack to hit my woolybugger) Yes. Will there likely be some crowds, especially at the more well known spots? Yes. Will there be October numbers? Absolutely not. Personally, Ive gone up the the last few years the last full weekend of September irrespective of what reports say, take both the fly rod for fish in the streams, and a spinning rod with spoons just in case. A few years back, I was debating about a trip, and despite reading reports about "nothing happening, don't waste your money," but went anyway to verify things for myself, found a few streams loaded, and had one of my better steelhead fishing days of all time. I don't know about bringing a major run in with this rain, but it will at least bring some more fish in. Now, the rain later in the week is something to keep an eye on, may make the trip this weekend if things are up but not blown out. With all that said, for any newbies, I suggest keeping a log of your days on the water, or at least some notes with date, conditions, fish caught, what you used, etc., so that you can revisit these when deciding if a trip is "worth it," and match your desired conditions to your better days.

old dog seriously, a former member of this site hit well over the weekend. his pics were on facebook sunday night. some of us saw them. he and his sidekick find fish when most fail. sadly, i have no idea which creek and even if he told me, i'm not sure it would be ethical to say. these guys do their homework when it comes to fishing. i cannot say if they caught a lot or not as i haven't talked with him yet.
Were they using minnows? Is it Tim? (Fishrmn) He's always in on the early action. When I had time chase steel regular ('95 to '06) and made the trip two-three times a week, I generally put the first fish on the bank the first week of Sept. Always liked fishing the early season. Not as many fish, but it's not cold...and if one avoids the wall, stop sign and Man holes, not as many anglers either. Its not "worth it" to most to fish early. Oops...I see you said "former" member... Can't be Timbo So who's the "former" duuds?? LTA

No minnows for this guy for several years. I use my share of soft plastic minnow imitations though.
Lake temperatures just finally dropped in where we needed them. As expected Sunday afternoon was good fishing with the water temp drop. Expect things to pick up quickly now.

I fished today with three boys - my 12&6 year old sons and the oldest's friend. Thought it might be a good day with some cooler temps and a spurt of rain yesterday. Other than Elk from the access down to the lake and the nice looking water behind the fences at Walnut, everything was back to summer trickle levels. it was the toughest sledding we've had in a long time. Obviously with a 6 year old I didn't get the chance to do much on my own, but even if I had I probably would not have fared well. He did finally land one in the late afternoon and big brother rolled a few on the fly rod - his first year using it. Very, very few fish in the sections of streams where you could see. Elk by the lake was pretty chalky so hard to say what was there. The water behind the fence at Walnut looked beautiful. Looks deeper and cleaner than normal. Should fish well when it opens. Fished a spot on the lake that usually is decent this time of year. Couple quick bites and a few fish rolling on the surface. If you can fish frog water well, go for it. If you're like me and do better with some flow and a bazillion fish in the cricks you'll want to wait a little bit. Could start any day now with the forecast but as of 7:15 PM there has not been a major run, or even a minor walk. Ever see a 6 year old with his first steelhead? It's pretty awesome! And a pox on the doosh on da Nut that moved in on a 6 year old and started casting in his drift after he nailed one.

Yea I always try as hard as I can to fit the kids in I've even given up my spot, ive even gone as far as requesting the pfbc to create an access area for children, seniors and disabled veterans even if it's just a 30 foot spot on the wall at walnut that would make a huge difference hopefully they address it. I'm a little hesistant sometimes because I let a young kid in my spot one time and his dad or whatever took it off him and gave him some bull**it to do, the kid wasn't even able to fish because his supervision wasn't even paying attention to him Glad to see your puttin in work with him especially the way the world is today with video games, drugs and all the other crazy **** kids are faced with
