Asian carp in Erie

Recently I saw an article on a fishermen catching a fertile Asian carp in Lake Erie. They filter the water thus killing baitfish. I'm guessing this is why the perch has been bad this year. Hopefully steelhead isn't the same way. BP

    I don't think they're present in any sort of considerable numbers as of yet, but I could be mistaken. Although I did see a scientific prediction a few months ago of how the fisheries would turn out if they became established. It went something along the lines of Steelhead, Walleye, Yellow Perch, and Emerald Shiner populations and health would all decline while Smallmouth Bass would not be effected. I'm just as concerned about the species they don't cover though, Lake and Brown Trout, White Bass, and Drum mainly.

    If this is what you're referring to, it was a grass carp.  Canadian officials still don't know if it was capable of reproducing (Grass Carp being sold for weed control are supposed to certified sterile/triploid)   
     
    They have found Grass Carp in Erie that are fertile (http://www.thecampingcanuck.com/fertile-asian-carp-found-in-lake-erie/1592/) and a student at the University of Toledo has provided evidence that Grass Carp are now successfully spawning in the Sandusky River (https://www.usgs.gov/news/university-toledo-student-discovers-first-grass-carp-eggs-great-lakes-tributary).
     
    Several carp species (Bighead, Black, Silver and Grass) are collectively referred to as "Asian Carp" in this discussion but  Silver and Bighead Carp pose a much greater potential threat to the Great Lakes.  These are currently being held a bay by the electrical barriers in the CAWS (http://acwi.gov/monitoring/webinars/CAWS_AsianCarp_20111013.pdf).  Unfortunately, they are headed to PA through up Mississippi/Ohio drainage, and will be in Pennsylvania soon enough.
