It's war Revenge served
Something got 8 of my chickens today, I am left with one hen and one rooster. Ironic thing is I was going to butcher 4 roosters tomorrow. Traps set, guns loaded ...........

Sounds weasley, not the usual fox, coyote, coon dash and dine. Were some carcasses still there? Of course, 8 would be a nice number for a fox family or a small coyote pack. Hope you win the battle.

Dang! As a fellow 'chicken keeper' I am really sorry to hear you are having predator issues. I wish you good luck getting rid of the problem in whatever way works... 'shoot, shovel and shut up' is my preferred method for predators of any type at our place.

4 were taken and 4 left at various points of the woodbine. The four that were left ranged from no real visible damage to partially eaten.

So many likely varmints from Yotes to Hawks and all sizes in between. After they are dead and laying there most anything will go for them- not necessarily the initial culprit. My next door neighbor has the issue constantly. Most chickens don't last too many nights out straying. Last summer two Bantees disappeared for a few Summer weeks- dead??? nope, they came back in early Fall- seems they roosted every night unlike some that just sit on the ground. Good luck Clint.

Lost another hen today. Killed in the woods line and half eaten. Mostly the organs. Building a small chain link fence today with stuff I had around. No more free range. I will also build some weasel box traps too.

Good luck Clint I hope ya get the rascal killing your birds. A man works hard enough caring for his animals an he sure doesn't need another headache. Be sure to post some pictures if you get the varmint.

Could be coons. I've seen them kill ducks and leave them lay or eat just the organs.

Could be owl's. Eating only the insides. They will take a cat off your porch and never be heard.

That sucks Clint . I would think fox . We have Hawks ( birds of prey ) and they usually hit the head first . Are you around next Monday or Tuesday ? The boat leaves port Wednesday

It happens in the middle of the day so that probably eliminates most. Not a bird I can say that for sure as no bird will kill 8. Coons are slowish and at night and again a coon would not kill 8 birds in a 2 hour window. Weasel or fox is my guess and I am leaning towards weasel.

During the day your for sure on the right track saying weasel. Possibly a mink if you have them in your area.

We had weasels get in our club's pheasant pen and they would kill a dozen or so birds. They'd eat out the throats than go after the base of the skulls. It took awhile to get rid of them with trapping and poison. The poison had to be supervised by the game warden.

Well the fence is up, I will build some weasel boxes tomorrow. Could be a mink as there is a small trickle of a stream within 100 feet, but had the same massacre when we kept them in the barn last year and that is 1/4 mile away.

You could try some sand or soft dirt around the perimeter of the run to show footprints, my guess would be the predator returns regularly now looking for a weak point in your defenses. Weasel would be highly on my list of suspects but don't forget the possibility of feral dogs...they can be pretty brazen.

All of the mustelidae are known for wanton killing, one of the reasons that ferrets had to be licensed in NYS for a while. But there would not be an old saying about the fox in the henhouse if that were not also true. I like Fisherladies idea about the sand trap, get an idea of what the opposition is. And maybe check with DEC they may have some advise.

Set up a number of infra-red trail cameras at strategic locations. You'll get an idea of what's frequenting the area.

Time for you to set up a poll. Animal and date of capture and/or kill. Winner gets 50% you will get enough $ for new chickens.

went to get the mail at dusk and had a confirmed sighting of a fox. It was 100 yards down the road, but close enough to know it could smell chicken. Now I am still thinking weasel due to the middle of the day thing but.......... Traps are baited and set.

Fox is my call . We see them here during day and my cat had many battles with them. They mate in spring at night and sound like a child in distress . Ever hear that ?

HT I've heard the cry of the Fox and Yotes too, bone chilling at certain times. Add the calling of the Sand Hill Crane and it's time in Jurassic Park. lol Got my fingers crossed for Clint, hope he whacks the culprit(s).
