Recent blowout

Based on the gauges, the flow of Walnut reached 2000 last Wednesday which is huge, but no mention on here. Did anyone take pics? Any major changes/rerouted of the creeks?

Only major change I noticed is that some of my favorite holes are now loaded with fresh chrome.

I've heard rumors, but nothing confirmed.

What I have heard, is that some steel are starting to creep up a bit shallower from their deep water summertime haunts. Were probably a good month or so away from the "worth it" runs beginning, but I wouldn't be surprised to see some fish coming to the mouths/ lower portions of creeks overnight and in the morning in the next few weeks. With the recent drought conditions, this rain definitely will help.

Can't wait, the itch is getting bad.

The itch is bad. There is usually a lot of talk when blowouts occur and I'm always interested in how they change the flow. Trout run gets upended typically and I like to fish it early in the season.

The creeks will not sustain water levels until the leaves are off the trees.
Sustained creek water does not come from the sky. It comes from the ground.
2000 CFS is a blowout, but not cataclysmic like in 2009. The meter broke and USGS guys were there doing physical measurements. 7000 cfs. That one really did change the creek, blew out the hole below the water falls, and we have not had any numbers of fish in Walnut above Manchester since then.

    Very cool videos cb!

Not to pick nits, but check out the historical data:  It was over 20,000 cfs from that storm, although maybe was lower by the time you filmed.

swim, trout run does seem to be flowing into the lake at a different spot almost every time i see it, which is about 3 or 4 times a year during steelhead season.  i don't fish there often.  i think that's more to do with the waves pushing gravel around from the lake than it is due to to the stream flow, though i could be wrong.

most significant changes i notice over the years i've been steelheading are from the ice floes and high water events, as the stream beds get scoured and old runs fill in and new ones are cleared out.

    You are absolutely right R2.
The data table I used broke at 7000, I was pretty sure it was higher but could not find the table to back it. Thanks.

Good stuff fellas, never seen those videos. The creeks were raging, could have easily rafted them. A few more weeks... Temps need to drop.
