Edward John Perch Boat
Anyone have any reports on how the Edward John is doing? My grandson and his buddy want me to drive them up to Erie. I will but would like to know if the drive is worth it. Havnt seen any reports from the boat. I even set an email, but no response. Thank for any input. Howard

Sounds awful quite up on Erie . No Perch or Walleye reports showing up at all. Either everybody got smart or the fishing is real bad !

Kind of figured that was the case. Nobody bragging about big catches this year. Usually the Erie forums are buzzing with reports by now . Seems the Walleye are running on the small size also when they are being caught. I don't think the Western Basin was super hot this Spring either. Had a friend go up on a local Walleye charter boat early last month with two other guys on board and they got ZERO !! Not one fish all day , expensive boat ride !

Also going out of Conneaut this weekend for Walleye. Friday and Saturday evenings. Will post Sunday. I see they have small craft advisory right now. Hope the wind settles down! Tight lines! Ed UPDATE: No Friday trip. Lake 4'-6'+ footers. Went Saturday from 3-8pm. caught 16 legal Eyes. Biggest 31.5" a little over 10#. About a dozen throw backs and a bunch of sheepshead. Saturday the lake layed down real nice after 3 pm.

I haven't caught a ton of eyes this year, but the ones I have were pretty sizable. This year the smallest was 5#, largest 15#. One thing I might add, though, is almost all of them were caught trolling for steelhead, so faster speeds and more aggressive presentations. Or in the case of the ones caught Laker fishing, VERY large lures and short leaders. Bigger lures bigger fish maybe? Just an observation. I don't fish for perch so nothing to add there.

Also tried to find reports for EJ was considering taking wife out but hard to find information no FB reports like other years. So why is the fishing slow? Please post report if you go out on EJ...WCW

There is another walk on perch boat out of Conneaut,Ohio - PCQueen, they have a daily fishing report on their web page. It goes back a few years and maybe you could get an idea on when the best times of year to try would be.

Didn't make it out last weekend but going out of Cleveland Wednesday on the Playin Hooky charter. They seem to be doing okay over there right now. Wave report looks promising so hopeing for a good day on the lake. Went out with him this spring in the western basin and had one of the best bags of eyes ever. Fourteen fish, one hundred eight pounds.

My wife and I went out of Conneaut on Sunday. We started at 48 ft. and caught a 4 perch and alot of sheephead, We moved out towards where the pack that was at 52 ft. and went west of them.We then caught 48 more , between 9 to 12 inches. The bite wasn't hot and heavy, but it kept us interested. We were using salted minnows cut in half.

Any ideas on why? Seems like the past two years the perch reports overall haven't been the best. I always jump to my opinion that a 30 fish limit is way too high for the amount of Perch fishermen out there daily, but the GLFC seems to think the stocks are doing okay as of now, so that's PROBABLY not it, but something is going on. Similarly, so far the Steelhead I've caught this year have all been much smaller, on average, than last year, so something is changing with that fishery too. Even the Drum fishing has been slow for me this year with only 4 total fish. They were all a nice size but I'm not seeing many of them this year, sadly. Fortunately, the Lakers, White Bass, and resident Walleye all seem to be doing fine this year, at least in my experience.

Steelies this year smaller then last year...they were skinny/small last year. Do they look skinny? We had a weak winter so can not say that's the problem. Seems like the lakers are doing good in Lake Ontario and Lake Michigan too from what I have read this year. WCW

Some people would biotch if you hung them with a new rope, The jackoff who posted this on the reports page should just buy a boat and all the equipment and do it himself, there are gonna be days that suck and days you sink the boat with fish, sounds like this guy was a spoiled child who got everything he whined for

Right now there is no bait in the area. once it moves in there will be fish. The 2 eyes I caught Sunday coughed up gobies. We need some emeralds to show up before it gets good. A couple of good westerly blows and we should start seeing fish in Pa.

Blunt, I'd understand your anger if this guy's post was about not catching fish, but it wasn't. It was about paying for a 7 hour fishing trip and only staying out 2 hours due to lake conditions. And by the sounds of it, they didn't venture out very far. If the captain of the Danny O was experienced enough to know the lake would be too rough for his customers and not even venture out that morning, so should have the captain of the EJ. I have to agree with him, everyone on board that morning should have received a refund.

Well, that was interesting. Capt John N, am I wrong in saying you're the ex-owner of the Edward John? Not that it makes any difference. But after your post I called the number for the Danny O on the FishErie charters link and talked to the NEW owner of the Danny O. Seems the Danny was sold this year too and now goes by the name of The Perch Pirate. Won't be going out for at least 2 weeks. Interesting that both perch head boats were sold this year. And for everyone's information, the numbers and email listed on the FishErie Charters link under the O Danny O is the same contact info for the Perch Pirate. The new owner wasn't able to change the phone number. And oh, I still think think the customers on the EJ that morning should have received a refund, whether the Danny O went out or not.

From the sounds of the post the guy made, I tend to agree that there should have been some sort of refund. Maybe half of the trip fee. I'd imagine many on the boat would have used it to tip the 1st mate. Not a very good move by the new owner. He has some pretty big shoes to fill with the Edward John's good reputation over the years. Doing something like this too many times likely wouldn't be a good move. Just curious why they wouldn't just move the boat into the bay/inlet to avoid the high seas? I doubt the fishing would be as good, but still fulfills the agreement to fish for 7 hours. That is what many inshore ocean charter boats do.

Porktown, why half? why any? why tip the 1st mate? sounds like he did nothing in the 2 hours the EJ was out there. I mean seriously, I've been on the EJ and the Victory, and it sounds like the EJ wastn't out there long enough for the mate to do anything. When it comes down to it, the Daniels boys got to get their **** together. And Pork, honest to christ, check out last year posts on the EJ, the complaints are unreal.

I haven't kept up on the reports from last year (only check if I plan to go out...). I know two years ago when I went out (O Danny O), since line for EJ was packed like sardines and O Danny O, had half of boat open. We had a blast, catching about 4 fish each... EJ had the same results, but shoulder to shoulder. I didn't realize EJ had those complaints going back that far. From my understanding, they ran a good outfit. All of the reports that I had read then, and general talk on here until recently have been positive. I'm not disagreeing with a full refund, but just saying something like half would be much better than a $10 off the next trip. Which anyone on that trip planning to do another trip (unless season pass) was probably slim to none. As for tipping the first mate, that guy is paid peanuts. He is working for tips. Not his call on the short trip. He still has to clean the boat, and not making any money off of filleting fish. Not that people are required to pay him, but I'm sure a few realize. If they gave back 50%, I'm not sure if I would tip or not. I sure as heck wouldn't if given a $10 coupon. If given full refund, I would tip something.

This is Captain Brian of the Edward John Perch Boat. I am the full time captain running about 6-8 trips per week. This season has definitely been a tough year. Numbers have been low and large schools have been hard to find. When we have had success, its been short lived (2-3 days at best). I've noticed substantial currents this year that could* be a cause as to the daily fish movements, I've also never seen so much baitfish in the "perch grounds" in my life. Not saying these are the reasons for tough fishing, just observations. I would like all customers and fisherman to know that myself and all our captains and deckhands take pride in our jobs, and try our absolute hardest every trip to get the costumers as many fish as possible. There's been some complaints out there that we aren't trying, that we drive around too much, etc. and nothing could be further from the truth. I want to see every single person onboard to have the best experience possible, and I am doing everything in my power to make that happen. I will not anchor up if there is no fish in an area or on my screen, I promise you that. With all that being said, we are staying positive and hopeful. Its been a rough start, much like last year. And hopefully just like last year, the late summer & early fall bite is soon upon us. Myself and many other local anglers had a tremendous fall catch last season, lets keep our fingers crossed that it happens again! Tight lines and good luck out there! Captain Brian
