Was just wondering if the Umbrella or Alabama rig is legal in Pa.

Yes. Used to be limited to 3 hooks, so had to use a 3 arm or put teasers on bigger umbrellas. No general hook restriction now.

When did the hook restriction change?  I thought it was still 3?

When did the hook and rod limits change? I swear I remember it being limited to two rods per person with two hooks per line in PA for as long as I've been fiduing, but as I'm checking regs for this year in January I see it's three rods per person with unlimited hooks. How long has it been like this?

Not sure how long, but I've been trolling 3 rods as long as I've had my boat, so at least 6-7 years. As far as hooks, I'm pretty sure this year is the first year with no restriction

It's been a few years for 3 rods, last year was the first for unlimited hooks I think...

Cool, I can pull the blades from my umbrella rigs.  Not that they seem to do all that much catching for me.

I'm taking a few blades off but leaving a couple on just to see if they make that much of a difference.

Yeah I believe fisherlady is right, few years on rods an last year the hooks changed, possibly 2 years, can't remember. The 3 rod rule was a nice change for trolling. The hook rule didn't seem to matter much other than umbrellas. And maybe perching off Erie because now I use 5 whole sabiki rigs in a row an drop 30 shiners down an limit in one drop. Hahahaha jk but I'm sure someone has tried

I have been thinking about trying an umbrella rig with a bunch of spinner up front and then a worm harness/spinner from the middle lead and putting a long enough line on it to make it look like a straggler trying to keep up with the school. The spinners would either attract or scare the crap out of the fish and then the worm harness would follow behind.

Ha, ha.  Pretty much my thought of a lot of lures.  Worth a try for sure.  If it works, I'd suggest making your own.  Like any umbrella set up, if you get it snagged, you're out $10-$20, depending on how it is dressed.

I got a few off of EBay last year for $5.00. They're Chinese but I can't tell much of a difference than the $20 ones. You can take the spinner blades off of some if you or leave them on.

I've seen where if you put a heavier jighead on the bottom and lighter ones on top they run true and don't twist and roll.

Going to have to give that a try.  Thanks.

When I lived in South Carolina umbrella rigs were very popular for stripers.  White bucktails with chartreuse twister tails produced the best.  The main baitfish was blueback herring, which look similar to the alewives.  So I would think the same setup would work well in Erie.
