2016 Erie - when do we start?
So ignoring trout/steelhead opportunities, since... meh, how soon do we get out onto Erie for perch and walleye? For at least the near term, the crazy wind pretty much eliminates any fishing for small craft. But at some point this crap will end. Should have the boat ready by the end of April!

The perch fishing is going on right now in the bay,the trick is find a day with no wind. My buddies limited out on jumbos on Saturday before Easter. 19 fow by the monument. They had a beautiful day and 2mph winds, that's a very rare day on Erie.

I'll start beach fishing at night for resident 'Eyes the middle of this month after a day of Lake Trout trolling. Don't fish much deep perch where they explode from the ascending pressure drop, I like casting for them with lures in the lagoons and jigging in 20-40 FOW for them along with Drum trolling and jigging around mid June when the spring trout bite is over and the summer bite hasn't started yet.

They don't explode in the bay, happening now. Deep water perchin swim bladders end up in there mouth in the lake, best advice move if your getting small fish or use a deflator and let them go. Never had problems with perch in the bay. As to the eye fishing ,I've had great nights and terrible. Just take one guy to turn on lights and the party's over. Long A bomber, shallow runner ,rainbow trout is a killer. One night had 50 lbs of eyes (6 big gals) full of smolts added to the weight, whose big eyes put a hurting on those precious smolts almost as much as the idiots that like catching 100 a day killing a 1/3 of them.

It's not their swim bladders hanging out of there mouth, it's there stomach.

It's the swim bladders. I small prick with a needle let's the air out, fish swims away, called fizzing did it 20 years ago and do it to this day. It's works, save floaters from the gulls.

What you see in the fish's mouth is its stomach. The swim bladder is below and behind the stomach inside the fish. Puncturing the stomach might allow the fish to swim back down somehow, but that is not the proper way to "vent" a fish. There are plenty of pages and videos on this topic. mouth, not mount** stupid fat fingers

Big Tuna, unfortunately you are 100% incorrect. The swim bladder does expand, but it causes the stomach to protrude from the mouth. This syndrome which also could cause bulging eyes and bloated belly is called Barotrauma .Tons and tons of info on the subject is available. Highly successful & practical recommendations for properly venting fish are listed all over the internet. Recommending pricking the stomach would not be a very prudent way to release fish. Not only will it cause damage to the stomach, it could also introduce bacteria into the internal cavity of an already stressed fish. It is never recommended to "prick the stomach". Use a venting tool to release the pressure on your fish or use some type of descending device to help with release. Your way might "save the floaters from the gulls" but I'm sure the crabs are gonna eat well that day.
