Years ago I tried circle hooks for trout with bait. They swallowed at least 50% of the hooks. I believe I tried sizes 10 through 6 gamskatsu octopus circles. I don't use bait for trout unless I plan on eating some and the fishing is slow. Which is very rarely any more. I like that the lakes are open this time of year. Trout are not the only thing in there.

How about no "Opening Day"? April is too late in the year anyway for stocked trout. They stock 'em all winter ..... Whenever the fish trucks are coming, just announce it so everybody that wants to take trout can go fishing. In buying a license, we should be free to fish whenever and wherever we choose - except adhere to the spawning regulations.

Let's get one thing straight to begin with. 7 guys did not come remotely close to catching 350 trout in one day. That is the biggest problem with this whole conversation. If the number were half that it would still be farcical.

Ever fished a county park sized lake on a stocking day? 50 fish in 3 or 4 hours isn't really hard to do.

Yes I have. And after an hour or two they totally shut down. I agree that the new rules are dumb. But this is typical trout season exaggeration. If its a typical stocking of maybe 1000 trout(being generous) this would mean 7 guys caught 1/3 of the total stocking in less than a full day, assuming they didn't fish for 24 hours.

I don't get why a lot of guys are whining and complaining about trout fishing, either you like it and you participate or you dont like it and you fish for something else. Whats the big deal!? If you pay for a liscense and are following the rules then who cares.all this complaining is non sense, sound like a bunch of bratty little kids.

Every good forum has plenty of them! Not that this this is a good forum any more but we don't have a shortage of trolls (me included some days!) I could care less about the trout stockings, really, but what I don't like is the shut down of some lakes due to the trout stockings. If you stock, leave it open and catch and release for said stocked trout until they can be kept. If some die, so be it. But even so, I still personally don't lose any sleep over it.

Big Tuna I'm not a trouter, but I feel sorry for the father taking his children out on the first day looking for some action. Any opinions?
Lots of other options for dads looking to get their kids some trout, or some fishing action, than taking them to the handful of lakes that are now open to year round fishing. Besides, they'll be stocked again within a few weeks of opening day. By the PFBC's own admission, most trout that they stock are going to end up dead, whether they're caught or the water gets too warm. They probably couldn't care less if they die from being gut hooked, taken out on a stringer or go belly up in July as long as they get caught as long as those license and trout stamp dollars keep rolling in. The opportunity's equal for everybody to catch stocked trout in any body of water open to trout fishing right now. If somebody's really that hard up for food that they depend on the opening day of trout to feed their family, they probably need to read a book on personal finance because they're not saving any money by catching dinner. As long as people play the game, the PFBC will keep playing right along.

Every good forum has plenty of them! Not that this this is a good forum any more but we don't have a shortage of trolls (me included some days!) quote Agree on the troll theory but disagree on the forum rating, I've met plenty of good people on this forum and likewise, I've made some people not so happy with me. Regardless of the outcome, there is a significant difference between busting balls, debating and, just saying plain stupid chyt to hear yourself talk. I could care less about the trout stockings, really, but what I don't like is the shut down of some lakes due to the trout stockings. Well, if nothing else your pike and musky aren't going to "stop fishing" during the early season. They are all laying on the lake or stream bottom, bellies distended with trout sammiches. I suspect the spring is their favorite season. :)

First off,the lake in question is 27 acres, winter stocking 1500, March stocking 5000. A good size stream feeds the lake and every trout congregate at the mouth of the creek ,( trout always seek moving water) so it easy to catch fish here. When I was a trout fishermen and there was and opening day 40 -75 fish where not a problem to catch. Like I say 10 percent of fishermen catch 90 percent of the fish. Believe me trout are not hard to catch. They may be hard for some of you but not me. My post was not meant to attack anyone's opinion, just a yes or no would be fine. I'm not losing any sleep and could are less but this does seem like a waste of money and fishing opportunities for the people that live for trout fishing. I went to this lake last year to observe opening day and did take a rod to toss a spinner. People where everywhere catching was non existent, and people where leaving and ****ing about no action. I tossed a spinner for about hour and a half and caught 5 pellet heads and a 22 inch pallie. To me trout stocking and pheasant stocking is about the same, a big waste of money but draws the same type sportsmen. Not saying that I didn't do it, but maybe outgrew it also. Yea it was fun the trout thing and the bird thing ( when I ran setters) but both things draw crowds and out outgrew that years ago. I agree more money should go into warm water species, and maybe even making more lakes for more fishing opportunities.

The opportunity to catch these fish is the same for everybody in the state that chooses to buy a fishing license. This program doesn't deny anybody the opportunity to fish for trout, and in fact makes the opportunities even greater. Not just for trout fishermen, but those who like to target different species in those bodies of water.
