Camping and boat security?

I was wondering if anyone ever kept their boats docked while camping. If you can't leave them docked then you have to trailer them and keep them at your campsite. My question would be how is the security at places like the Yough Dam, Lake Author or Pymatumimg? I would hate to leave the campground for a little while and have to tow my boat around. I guess I'm even thinking how secure they would be at night.

My uncles boat was robbed at pymie. My parents boat was robbed in the keys in the marina right outside their hotel room.

Wow! Now that's discouraging. It's hard to do anything anymore with all the degenerates out there. Even night fishing is dangerous in a lot of places.

Do you mean robbed, as stuff taken off of the boat, or boat itself stolen?  Sucks to hear either way.

Athur doesn't have a campground on the lake.  They do have cabins with docks.  I've stayed there as well as Pymie cabins, without issues.  I do not leave my fishing gear or anything easy to grab on the boat.  Never really thought to lock the boat to the dock or anything, but might not be a bad idea.  My electronics are pretty much worthless, so I'd imagine any thief that could make it to the dock would likely notice not worth the effort and go the other way.  I do have my outboard locked, but also pretty old and likely not the target that others would be.

Pymie has campgrounds, both PA & OH that you can beach your boat.  I would definitely pull all gear if I left mine beached.

Lots ov professional thiefs  (& don't want to tempt someone that had no intrest in stealing) make a killing at campgrounds. Like PT said remove all gear.

Small place like Tub Run or Mill Run you would think would have a Barney Fife running around.

I use to camp at Tub Run and leave the boat tied to the shore, never had any problems, but not sure I would today. People nowadays have little respect for each other.

gear taken out of the boat. Boats were tied up to a dock overnight in both cases.

patroller dont let your camping plans go in the dump over what could happen.just make sure you do not leave any valuables on the boat and maybe dock it next to a few other boats if possible. but i have been many places where boats, kayaks are docked on the beach. anyway if you do go have a great time i cant wait until summer i am taking my family camping at coopers rock state park.and im looking forward to finding some cool streams to do some fishing.

Homeowners insurance paid for the stolen gear I believe, if that helps any. Though you'd still have to pay your deductible. And certainly, more often than not, nothing was stolen. I just know it happens.

A friend of my had his trolling motor stolen at Tub Run.  When I camp I always trailer my boat when I'm done fishing.  Sometimes I do it twice a day.  It's sad you have to do it, but you have to do it.

When I first started camping at Tub Run it was just a big empty field and there was never any problems, than the state decided to develop it! Concrete slabs, electric, water and restrooms! Then came the trash and its been down hill since.Couple of years ago someone cut their way into my sisters tent and stole some stuff. When people actually rough it to camp the roughens stayed away.On I almost forgot once a ranger ask me to either remove my side arm or at least cover it up, after he made sure I was legal.Always carried with birdshot for snakes.

It's just too bad that the money the State wastes that they could have at least one secure area for boats or other watercraft. Someone's always on duty during season. I don't mind trailering when I'm on shore. Just a shame it's not even safe at your campsite.

The lake is Army Corps, but the campground is state owned?  I was unaware.

I fish pymie a lot and stay at campground. I trailer my boat to and from ramp if you leave in water if you can take everything out that would be better . its a pain in the neck but that the way it is . people r not honest anymore it sucks. my uncles has been robbed once. put a trail camera up when you are staying there. just hide it good.its a shame we have to do stuff like that now a days.

I don't see the problem.  Sleep in your boat with your AR-15 across your lap, and ring the campground with claymores.  I'd say that's minimum camping safety if you are around the stupidest and most dangerous animal around these parts.  And yes, I mean humans.

If you're camping and worried about people you're not doing it right.
