Take your snow shoes with yinz this weekend fellas.

"The Weather Channel" is reporting "the models" have provided enough information for TWC to be almost certain there may be a storm that will produce  snow and wind.  With this information TWC was able to successfully identify the storm as being "Jonas" which may move somewhere up the East Coast.  Jonas is a "major, major" storm and may be one of the largest storms to date, but TWC isn't quite sure where the "major, major" part will be or, if it will snow there.

TWC is pretty sure, though not certain, there may be heavy snow somewhere in the Original Thirteen Colonies and some areas may see coastal flooding.  NY could see a substantial amount of snow, however Washington DC might see more but, Philadelphia is a possibility before and, if Jonas heads north.

TWC is certain someplace somewhere will see snow from massive "winter storm Jonas"............  The models, have spoken.

Oh, how much snow...... well, TWC reports amounts might, maybe or, could reach 12".  Someplace.

I tell ya, being a baby boomer  I just don't see how back in the day, we were ever able to survive these horrendous snow producing storms, .............   without knowing their name?

    Tight lines and be safe.

They make their money by selling advertising. The more they waffle, the more you watch. The more you watch, the higher the ad costs.

I swear our local weather dude vaper locks whenever he gets to forecast something other than the norm.

The bread, milk and toilet paper companies sales must be lagging behind their expected sales.  Stock up in case you get snowed in. HaHa
Just checked Northmoreland Park Lake, since it is close to home. Still has open water from the boat house down to the dam. Same as last week when I checked. Drilled 2 holes off the handicap dock, ice was 3" to 3.5". It didn't look very safe to me.

                                                                   01/20/2015

Trekking carefully I conducted  a official certified ice thickness "Spud Bar Thunking Test" in and around the Jamestown boat launch and marina.  Intitial (as in 30 to 50' from shore) "thunking" required 4 to 6 stabs  before a complete penetration was acquiredMoving further from shore the test revealed; less than 4 but more than 2 stabs, were needed to obtain the same results as above.  I continued with the preliminary test until I found areas requiring less than two stabs at which time I said, to he!! with this.

Secondary test were conducted of the areas with an authentic Mora 7" ice auger that confirmed area "A" to be 2 1/2" thick ice.  Area "B" requiring less then 4 but more then 2 stabs of the thunk test was found to have 2" (+/-) thick.

Thickness for areas of ice beyond "B", you can go find out for yourself.. 10-4?

I certainly was not happy with the results regarding ice thickness but, happy to say I saw no "gray ice" and heard Pymie moan and groan as her waters continue turning from liquid to solid.

I cannot substantiate ice thickness for the other areas of the lake however, I do know, I saw no other idiots on the ice.

In conclusion, while the ice was thick enough to support my, cute little chubby body, I certainly in no uncertain terms would advise two people walking/standing/fishing together.

PS.  NO....... they don't remove the public docks at Jamestown for the winter months.

    Yeah.. they are still in.

Loaded up and trucking, north bound and down,  hmmm not exactly a proper word when, discussing "ice fishing" but anyway, I'll be out of the office this afternoon getting first hand reports.  Wish me luck!!!

Fair to good ice off of Tuttle Point blanketed with a couple inches of snow.  Ice thickness ranged from 3 to 4" with the top layer being formed from frozen slush.  A few areas of wet slush did dot the area.

Taking today off, having conducted "spud bar test", "bore-a-hole bore-a-hole test", catching no fish, and watching the TWC (I have no idea why) channel the past three days.............   my azz hurts.

Back at it again tomorrow if the "Ben****", "Icy Hot" and, "Advil" work!

    Think spring and tight lines.

Seriously....  BEN****, a medicated analgesic heat rub used to temporarily relieve muscle and joint pain, censored.  Huhh, I'll be dammed!

I know In the six days I and a couple friends fished Pymatuning we got one bite between the three of us and we talked to many others with the same story.  We used small and medium minnows, corn worms, maggots, Sonars, Dare Devils , and other jigs in 6 to 30 FOW.  We tried Tuttle and Jamestown.  Hopefully things will change and the bite starts when you get on the ice.  Also, ice is 4 to 6" and was good at Tuttle but much, softer at Jamestown.  Good luck!

I decided to back-up and regroup regarding my adventures on the Ice; geeeeez what a difference a few miles can make.  The ice was much thicker, much clearer and really making a lot of weird noise.

As one huge loud popping sound roared across the ice, leaving my two friends wondering what the hell they were doing out on the ice, came a voice from a distant group of ice shanty's and I quote; "there's one one that'll make some buttholes pucker" which, brought about some nervous ha haa's and giggles, unquote.

Seriously, though noisy, the ice was nice and we were successful (finally) with catching a few fish.  Their very first fish for my two friends and I wouldn't be surprised if, after we made our exit from the ice, those two guys didn't race to the nearest store to see who could buy the most ice gear.

Fisherlady2 thank you kindly, I waaaaaas beginning to wonder.

Old dog there is no way you could have allowed that bucket to get away, not a authentic green Gander Mountain (lol)  I can remember back in the day when a guy would cherish his plastic bucket almost as much as his favorite ice rod.... 10-4?

I didn't make it out today, spent most of the afternoon building a sonar unit for the ice.  I had an old Hummingbird Wide One from 1993 I once used on canoe trips down the Allegheny.  Attached the Wide One base to the lid of an old ammo can, placed a 12 volt lead acid battery from a game feeder inside the box, installed a cigarette lighter  errrrrr..... power socket through the side of the can and, wired it.   Attached a 'power socket' plug to the Wide One power lead and bingo, the thing works........ I think.  The screen turns on and the unit responds to the simulator and the menu options pop up but, I'll have to wait till tomorrow to see if the transducer works.  I know the newer units will go immediately to simulator if there is a problem with the transducers but I don't know if the older models did.

Heck, I need an excuse to sit on the ice tomorrow anyway.

Tite lines to everyone able to wet a line through the ice and to those who can't, think spring.

Shenango is still sporting 5+ inches at Chestnut but, the wind was something else today.  Two fellas I was with put some fish on the ice and I, well let's just say I had a normal day of fishing. Every darned time I would check my bait, it was gone and I'm thinking the bait must of been bad cause it kept falling off my hook.

Did get to test drive my "new in the box" home made for the ice, sonar.  The dad-burn thing actually worked and I saw little fishy pictures of what was swimming beneath our feet.
