Allegheny River Winter Fishing

Hey guys.  I started fishing the Allegheny river for walleye about 3 years ago and have become an addict.  I fish predominantly at lock 2 and 3, but have never really ventured out much further north.  I was wondering if any of you would be willing to share some insight regarding other locks/dams that provide access for wading and shore fishing, and provide some decent fishing during the winter months.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Just need to keep myself busy this winter and want to try some new spots.

Thanks

Right now, the river's froze up and ice is starting to jam here at Freeport. But when the ice goes out, you can do some pre-walleye season fishing at the mouth of Buffalo Creek on the down river side, (you have to walk up and over the Railroad bridge. It's solid footing for wading there, and not too much current. Figure on crankbaits, 'cause if you're using jigs, you're gonna be tyin' a lot of knots. You can fish from the bank at Tarentum by the boat launch at the mouth of Bull Creek. I can't say what it's like for wading. The mouths of most of the creeks are suitable for wading and fishable. Crooked Creek, by the primitive launch between Locks 6 & 7, Cowanshannock Creek out of Kittanning above #7 and Pine Creek just up river from Cowanshannock. All of those are good for walleyes, and after ice-out, some good sized Muskies are taken at the creek mouths. There's other spots that can be productive; these are some of the better ones.

The more north you go on allegheny the less locks and dams there is. Its south that has more locks and dams. It all depends on how far north you want to go there is the start at kinzua dam.

I understand that there are no dams north of East Brady (or at least that Pool), however, I don't have my boat out right now so I am stuck on shore.  Just found that fishing near a dam in the winter usually yields me more fishing opportunities than pretty much any other area.  I will definitely be checking out some of those creek mouths though.

Anyone know how ice conditions are now, and the bite in general, for any species? I thought about going down to some trib mouths while it's warm, but if they're frozen over then it's obviously not worth it.

Buffalo Creek is still froze at Freeport, as is the river from Freeport downriver in the big curves, but there is open water from Lock 5 down to Freeport, about 1 mile of river. I haven't been up to the dam but you should be able to fish off the wall on the east side below the dam 'cause the mini-powerplant gives off that warm water discharge. You have to access through Leechburg on 66 north, then left to Schenley. It'll bring you right down to the dam and powerplant. Lots of big fish get caught there, but plenty of tackle stays in the river!

Yeah I would think with the warm weather expected this week, open water shouldn't be too much of an issue.  I will be going out to either lock 4 or 5 this weekend.  Let you guys know how I do.

Yesterday when I went to work, the ice was gone on the river but Buffalo Creek was still froze including the mouth. Coming home Buffalo had started to let loose. This morning when I drove by the river on my way to work, it was lookin' good and Buffalo Creek was still jammed up. Tonight coming home from work, Buffalo looks clear, but the river has come up 1 1/2' feet in 9 hours, and now the it's muddy. Must've had some bad weather up north; either heavy rain or the Corps is just lettin' down the reservoirs.
