Ct--

Took one skipper and an 8 pt this year in rifle season.
Deer seen and passed on every sit.---
Hunting in a hard to get, high deer density, urban coastal area- have yet to hear another shot.
Went in for a short time yesterday with black powder- saw 2 doe and much new buck sign.

Out in light rain yesterday sitting over a well maintained fresh scrape with black powder.
Passed 2 flatheads and had a flock of over 20 hens and young around for over an hour.
    Fun sit but no horns.
Have till the 31st with powder then bow again through Jan  31.

Buck tearing it up but at night-been there all times of day only to find fresh marks each  AM -slipping in and out easy and not bumping around the area, guess that's just his routine there-
Went out this last day of black powder (31st) 4 flatheads came in and hung around for an hour- took one.

    great season---

Checked out my spot for the first time this year.
The mast crop was real heavy- quite a shock considering the drought we have had all Summer and how heavy it was last season.
Not used to two in a row anymore.
It made for great sightings last year and a real nice Buck, but as we all  know, with good mast they don't have to move much.
Cant wait to find out, although new sign was aplenty- but its still Summer.
Have two Pvt land small places to go to so I don't bother with cameras.
Being out there and finding out is half the fun IMHO.
No more 2 or 3 States- at 69 am just hunting in Ct now.
Keep thinking bout the other good Buck that was still there last year.
Will Hunt till they gotta drag ME out.

Good luck to ya this year r3 and I hear you on the acorn crop as I been seeing the same thing.    For the first time since moving to my little piece of Penn's Woods I'm beginning to see some production on White Oaks around my field.  .  Hopefully that will keep some of the white tailed critters hanging around my backyard this season.

Years past, I would get plenty of pictures of some nice bucks during summer but by fall, the darn things disappeared to chase doe populating the more heavily acorn producing areas.  Those areas are thick with mature White Oaks that put a good mast down for the past two years so I'm hoping to find those areas lacking production this year.

Been on the ground past 2 mornings looking to stick a Turkey.
Only out a couple of hours each AM and have seen 11 flatheads so far - all reasonably close and a couple  of passed chances.
Sitting on a rock yesterday in open hardwood scratching  a gathering call and listening for a response-smoking a cigarette too.
2 Doe walk up just a bit out of my range  and bed.
    Crazy.

Went to my little 20 ac permit where I can only shoot bout half of it.
Made up 2 ground blinds last week and went in to address them after heavy winds the other day.
8- EIGHT- fresh ground scrapes in a 50 yard area.
Have seen a scrub basket,a spike and a small 6 or 8 point.
Hope for better as there was still a nice one after I took what may have been his brother last year.
Time will tell but what can one expect on only a very few acre permit.
It is surrounded by a few hundred NO acres though and all ya need is one ready Doe----
Good luck to all out there---

    Hope ya get one R3

Past couple seasons my son and I have made due on some smaller properties. One that's 30 acres of mostly clover/timothy fields where we have to set up on edges where deer come from other properties to feed. Another is 13 acres in the middle of some big timber. Good bedding cover on about half of it but tough to get into good spots without blowing them off.

That said we saw 5 different bucks on the 30 acres this season and he shaved a little hair off the back of a big doe Saturday eve. Saw does and skippers on the smaller property and had 3 decent 8's on trail cam there during the season. Hunted about 15 times between the 2 and saw deer on every hunt.

When its the 'right spot' it doesn't make much difference what size it is.
Hope you and your son contiinue with quality outdoor experiences.
Know what ya mean bout blowing them out- gotta get into this place at least an hour early- NOT fun when its freezing out in the AM.

Got in real early this AM ( first day) no shots heard anywhere.
Had 11- possibly 13- different doe and young around as close to my leafy blind as 30 feet.
All within 2 1/2 hours-- no horns so I chose to pass.
They move here in early AM - afternoon and evening hunts are a struggle at best.
    Left bout 10 30.
Noticed that the Doe and young are together and not separated by  rutting.Over or beginning ??

r3 check the tarsal glands on all the doe you see. You'll have no problem seeing a difference with those doe in heat.

Certainly check the tarsals on the males for signs they are marking their scrapes. No need to tell you about the swollen knecks other then don't wear any "doe colonge". lol

    Good luck......... send pictures.

R3, do you have antler restrictions there in CT, or can you shoot any buck?

    Sounds like an exciting morning.

Those small properties can be tough but rewarding

On the 30 acres we hunt, it's mostly just clover/timothy fields with only about 5 acres of woods, so most deer we hunt are coming from neighboring properties to feed on the greens.  The property owner to the north and west has about 60 acres of timber that used to be hunted hard, but since he bought it only his twin teenage boys hunt and they don't get doe tags, so that property has really had a rebound in the deer population the past couple years.  We saw three different family groups of does and fawns coming off his property to feed during archery, and 4 different bucks, and that corner of the field is archery only because his house is only about 100 yards through the woods.

Fields to the east and south are still in standing corn, and my experience there over 10 years shows that when that's the case, those deer bed in the corn, feed in the corn and pretty much live in the corn till it gets cut.  Hunted that side a few times, and only saw a few.  AM hunts are just about impossible there.

The 13 acre property is new to us last year, and still getting a feel for it.  It's long and narrow.  Deer feed in the owner's back yard on a buffet of massive red and white acorns.  Hunting it in the AM is just about impossible here too, but my son doesn't like to wake up early to hunt anyway. Not much agriculture within a mile of there, so patterning them has been tough as they move around to different sources of acorns in the big woods.  Good transition area to hunt in the evening between the bedding cover and his yard that's easy to get into without alerting deer.

Enjoy your reports.  Keep 'em coming.

    We have no antler restrictions.
    2 Bucks with bow
    1 Buck with rifle
    1  Buck with black powder
2 Doe tags in each of the above seasons
More if you hunt State lands and replacement Doe tags in special areas- like where I hunt.
    Its nuts.

HEY --hadda brake hard to miss a great shooter running across I95 this AM on the way to my property.

Hit my spot for 4 1/2 hours this AM.
Got in bout 5 30 and sat in a blind.
This was the first time I have ever been there in AM with ZERO sightings-
    Especially surprising after yesterday.
Even the Turkeys were not on the 2 small roosts there today.
Wellll- that's why its called hunting- not shopping   lol.
Buck sign everywhere, even refreshed scrapes since the rain Tues and Tues night.
Might think something spooked them pretty good.
I slip straight in easy and out easy- no hiking around - the ones yesterday were all calm- never spooked one.
May hit it tomorrow evening just to see whats up later in the day but most likely not till Monday AM.

wellll went in late yesterday and found out my problem--PM dirt bikes.
Members of the owners family sooooo gotta -gotta live with it.
Pushing everything outa this little place late means nothing in the AM either.
Its a postage stamp on a very large area.
Deer just move over when harassed.
Kinda takes the wind outa waiting out a decent buck and goes back to a possible brown and down as the season goes on.

I hear ya on the dirt bike r3, maybe the colder weather and lake effect snow will create a change in plans and the bike gets parked for several days.

Perhaps the deer will become more active ahead of the storm and again after the storm and the snow lends to a successful hunt.

    Good luck...

Don't give up completely on the area, I've seen deer adjust to some strange things, especially heavy equipment and ATV traffic around here.

'Been'- hunting Connecticut- not Pulaski with lake effect.    lol
    No snow here---yet.
Yea Jigs -have had that experience but it sure changes the natural movements and can kinda ruin things.
Gotta drive 64 miles each way to this place and to get there and see new dirt bike tracks in the AM and no Deer would really irritate me.
Knew it was too good to be true last season, seen deer on every sit all  season and took a great mature buck.
Got another spot where I took a 180 lb 8 point the year before that  - may  well go back there.
Only see a Deer there every few days but its quiet with only one other guy who parades around a lot.
    Always sumptin eh--

     today--
BTDT-thanks for the 1/4 inch of new snow..
    30 deg minus wind  chill.
Nothing moved on it but it was nice.
Got in bout 5:30 and sat till 8:30.
Big winds came with the 8 am sun.
Walked the area and nothing had moved.
The other place for a week or so.
Something is wrong in the Zoo.-
Deer on every Am sit last year.

Been hitting my other place- they had trail bikes and threw them out recently and haven't seen a deer yet there.
Second rut should be happening very soon-perhaps later this week.
After a week off will try the zoo again.
The big winds that happened every day the first week are over.
Would be sitting and leaves would come off the ground and  blow by sideways lol.
    Still haven't heard one shot.

r3 any chance I could have that snow back. Lol

We open on Monday and it ain't looking good weather wise for the first week.

On second thought I'd best be careful what I wish for. You keep the snow.

Great thing about hunting; "you just never know". Which in my case is certainly, very true. I just never know if I'm going, or not.

After seeing 11 flatheads the first day in a short time- several of which kept coming back around and were only counted once- I had some very high hopes.
The season has been completely deerless  since despite many sits.

Hope you folks have better luck.

The only deer I have seen since our first day in 'NO' fields and such have been in very big groups as were the ones I saw on day one.
One of those -if ya see one - you will see them all, seasons.
They seem to be grouping up very early for some reason.
That ,however, leaves a lot of empty ground   lol.
Hope the second rut changes this silly scenario.

Man I had a great afternoon from 1:30 till dark. Three buck with the first at two hundred yards and no problem seeing his hat rack but, kept his distance while maintaining company with three Doe. Second was half rack keeping his nose to the ground harassing 8 Doe now running around within 50 yds of my stand. Rascal wouldn't pick his head up letting me see if he be a shooter.

Third dude walked out of the woods showing me a not so pretty hat rack then turning and walking directly away from me, never to stop and look back.

Was a shooter and I woulda if I coulda but not in the butt.

I'm thinkin' they might be back sometime in the near future.

R3 Keep this under your hat, there's others listening but I know, my secrete is safe on your thread. lmao

    Good luck.
