Brown Trout

Ok,here it goes.I know I'm not alone on this but I would love to see some sort of a Brown Trout program/regulations for Lake Erie in PA.Maybe us fishermen that are interested could put together a petition and present it to the PA Fish Comission.Or maybe I'm just dreaming...

You mean the multiple ten plus pounders iv seen caught this year has nothing to do with a better stocking program . Or maybe the fact I caught my first erie brown ever this year . Really sounding like a **** here but trying to think realistic . They are just an added bonus put and take fish like the steelhead. I wish more would be released but who's to say they aren't ? If there's big ones around someones doing good with the release . I kept mine because it was bleeding crazy from a deep hooked spoon and after attempted revival it was apparent I was fighting a lost cause

There already is a program/ regulation.  You can only keep 3 per day. Then they restock em'.
Most of the brown trout I do see caught get their picture taken and then released back into the wild.

I'd like to see some more Browns being caught during the OW season personally. It seems like nobody catches them trolling and I'm not even sure what kind of feeding habits they have compared to Steelies and Lakers. I know from being in the Tribs a few times during the summer that they're not permanent stream dwellers, how could they be at the size they are!

I believe they are stocked in Erie to provide a "near shore" game fishing option.  I know a friend of mine that lives off of Ontario fishes for them a lot, and gets them a few hundred yards from shore.

Good to know. I thought I remembered hearing that they hug the bottom but are not deep water so they stay in something like 100 FOW or less year round. Just hard to believe that trout would prefer to stay so close to shore during the summer months when the thermocline giving them access to cold water is out deep. I'll have to do some more nearshore trolling next year, big Drum plus a bonus Brownie or two would make for just as fun of a day of fishing as Walleye and Steelhead!

I remember when we caught Palomino Trout in Lake Erie mostly at Trout Run. They were more silvery yellow then dark yellow. My friend landed one that was 27 " biggest I'd ever seen out of Erie. It's funny how certain Trout stay schooled up together. On certain days when the lake was clear and flat and the sun was right we could see schools of fish moving along the shores of Trout Run. Seen a school of Browns come by one day with about 25-30 fish packed up and all were Browns. Seen Palominos the same way swim by in a pack of about 8-10 fish. Some Steelhead packs were unbelievable as they cruised along, almost looked like a huge dark shadow of seaweed flowing in a current.

What time of the year was this? I'd love to score a few trout from the pier on our beach but I've only ever caught white bass/perch, drum, rock bass, shallows, and walleye. Then again, I'm sure the trout are fairly far from shore by May.

Ontario gets deep pretty fast from shore I believe. Might be why colder water stays closer to shore in Spring there. Erie's fairly shallow in comparison. Ontario's max depth is 800 ft.

JAT, it was something to see ! You should have seen how many fish would hook up when those big schools cruised by .

oh my god. He said you take the fish out of the water and get a picture with it?!? That's just awful. Those poor mutant hatchery fish. Next time I see someone take a steelhead out of the water for 20 seconds in gonna hold their head under water for 20 seconds and see how they like it. I think they should outlaw catching them all together. Just have those just ducky tour boats drive up and down the creeks. That way people can get all the fish pictures they want. They can even feed them hatchery pellets and power bait, their natural forage. Save the endangered erie steelmut! (Heard they're only stocking 900,000 this year)

I"ve noticed that the fly fishing guys are catching more fish than bait fishermen. I think for the preservation of the fisherie we should ban them all together in our tribs. This would eliminate the torchering of fish for pic taking as well as the constant whining about people keeping a LEGAL LIMIT of fish.  Imagine fishing without some hollier than thou fly guy looking down his nose all day like he's the fisherman Jesus chose to help. Get off your high horse, and go home.

Re: Brown Trout 2015/11/13 22:50:56 (permalink)
Jeez, people get way too aggressive on here about the various types of fishing. I'm a fly fisherman and I don't think I'm better than anyone else including bait fisherman and I don't have a problem with guys keeping a few fish even though I release all of mine. I also bait fish just as much as I fly fish and I'm not some careless person who goes around killing every single fish I catch as is the common perspective by many fly fisherman.

My point here is not to judge either group (especially since I'm a member of both!), I'm just trying to say that each crowd oftenjudges the other horrendously and I don't think either one is as bad as the other thinks they are.

That's all I'll say, not getting in to any fights here. Not worth my time, I've got other things to do tonight.

Good luck fishing for all you guys heading out this weekend!

Bet he doesn't have a hard time getting a spot to fish, on a crowded day!
