Trout fishing / fly fishing
Does anyone know any place with decent water levels holding trout within an hour or so drive of Pittsburgh? Seems like everything is too warm and low, but was hoping someone with more knowledge of the area could help point me in the right direction... Thanks.

The Yough from Confluence to Ohiopyle is starting to cool down nicely. As far as being an hour from Pittsburgh, I live in Jefferson Boro, its about 13-15 miles south of Pittsburgh, and on average it takes me about an hour and 10 minutes to be in Ohiopyle. Hope to see ya there. Hope this help a bit.

thanks hendey, i had already been considering meadow run. maybe i'll go hit both. any thoughts on flies? i assume terrestrials will be my best bet, maybe some caddis nymphs. is anything likely to be emerging?

I was at meadow run about a week ago, good # of fish up high, but very spooky. Might I suggest Dunbar creek.

I'm a self proclaimed "Dry Fly Snob" so I'm not a lot of help. However I just generally toss around Adams, BWO's, and my absolute favorite the parachute hopper. Many a fun day with that one. If you do fish the Yough, make sure you've got a wading staff handy. Good Luck.

There are a lot of wild brookie streams in the mountains near Indian Creek and Laurel hill area if you are interested in that.

Probably have to skip fishing the Yough this weekend. I'm not liking the water temperature. The weather forecast looks better for next week. Hate to give up a day of fishing but that's the way it goes sometimes. Got grass to cut and rear shocks to change on my truck. Might head out to Pa. Motor Speedway Saturday night and take in the sprint car race. I'd like to see some old friends I haven't seen in a while.

They start fall stockings in October, check out the stocking schedule. Pine and Deer Creek get a fall stocking and they are close. Buffalo creek is a little farther, but one of my favorite creeks. Buffalo gets stock the first week of October. I caught trout on Montour Creek well into July, but it finally got too hot. http://www.fishandboat.com/stocking/trout_statewide2015.pdf

thanks guys. i don't have anything against stocking (though i think they should spend less money on farm raised trophy trout and more on watershed restoration/protections), but i like the idea of at least having the chance to catch a native or holdover fish. think i may try some of the wild tribs in somerset for brookies, and hit up the bigger rivers/streams/creeks in october after temps cool down.
does anyone have any up-to-date info on the loyalhanna?

I agree with you, but it's nice to have some close fishing if you only have an hour or two after work. In my opinion stocked trout are nothing but striper bait.
