Tried some drum/sheepshead and it wasnt bad at all

Got a few drum out of the Yough this morning. Not much meat on them for their size but I fried them up and they were actually delicious. A bit oily but fairly mild. My daughters LOVED em. Guess I'll be keeping them from now on.

The caution there is the same as ALL oily fish: take what you plan to use immediately, clean the fillets of anything that isn't white, and they will be good.  Closest parallel most people have encountered would be bluefish from the ocean/bay.  Blues are quite tasty if you prep as above, and supposed to be really good smoked (I am guessing the drum would smoke well also).  If you try to freeze oily fish the outcome will not be as good.

Glad you gave it a shot.  We plan to keep a few next Erie trip.

I have been wondering for years why they are maligned...The ones out of the Yough are good eating...Erie...not so good for some reason...But they are a fish and chip staple in the western areas of the Great Lakes....
