When it thaws...
will the spring fishing be kind of poor because of the ice jams blocking flow and grinding up fish? I know last year was bad but this ain't looking any better. I do believe ice kills some fish, no idea if it's significant, is this worse than last year?

Its never gunna thaw!!! It will be a slow spring like last year. Some fish will come in but holdovers are frozen solid this year is worse than last in NWPA IMO. No matter what I will be out making the most of it!!! WCW

I haven't been up north since xmas week. I know last year me and a buddy made a trip up early Feb and Ice was up to the RT.5 Bridge on 20 Mile. Ice was all the way into the parking lot. It was bad then, not sure what its like this year.... I'll see if I can find the pic I took. Last years thaw filled in and changed almost every creek, going to be all new again looks like this this year! - We need more gas guzzlers running - we need global warming back

Ohhhhhhh boyyy........ your gonna be really disappointed about Global Warming. Just this morning, it was reported on the internet, that the surface temp.s recorded from space by NASA have been taken from computer models and found to be BOGUS.
Of course, one cannot believe all that is reported on the internet so, I'll remain glued to the TV for updated reports from CNN.

Certainly will be nice to see the effects of climate change so these children don't miss kindergarten because it's too COLD.

These kids are missing school as a direct result of climate change. Although, I have no idea if global warming is behind the major dip in the jet stream, although many scientists suggest it is. I would have to categorize it as climate change though. Regardless, this next round doesn't look good. It should not be negative anything F in PA. Remember, when this cold air moves from the arctic, it is being replaced by warmer air, while gone. Most likely melting more of the glaciers and adding to the mess of the rising sea levels. Just because it is cold where we are, doesn't mean everywhere is following the same trend.

HI, Just thought someone might be interested to know what the weather is like, today, here in my little piece of Penns Woods. Please find included; actual temps. recorded for this same time last year. High of 2 degrees today with a low of -17 degrees tonight.......... The NORMAL high is 37 degrees and the NORMAL low is 18 degrees...... On Feb. 19, 2014 the high was 47 degrees with a low of 30 degrees. ~ AccuWeather. No doubt about 'Climate Change'....... eh? PS. I wonder what the computer generated surface temps. taken from outer space might reveal? (or, what the notorious mad scientist(s);would want us to believe?) PSS. CNN* Weather reports: close to a hundred cold records could be broken in the next 24 hours. Think Spring!!!!!!!!!! or 'Global Warming'! * Won't mention Fox Weather; wouldn't want to upset my fan club.

I hate ice fishing... but looks like we'll be ice fishing till trout opener this year. Hope this doesn't throw off early season fishing like it did last year. I can already feel its going to be another one of those years.

Let's hope this doesn't drag on like it did last year. I think it was two years ago that Spring came really early, and had the seasons a bit out of whack in the other direction. It really makes for trying to plan fishing trips with groups or travel involved a pain in the rear. It's February, so it's supposed to be cold, not this cold. If we are still getting these arctic blasts in 2-3 weeks, then we really need to start worrying. A week in the 50s with some rain, will have some open water.

Looking through photos last night, the first farm pond bluegill of the spring for my boys wasn't caught until March 22nd last year. Can't remember how long the ice had been off exactly, but we're usually hitting it within a few days of when the ice clears. I'd like to get one more steelhead trip in this year, but in years with heavy, prolonged ice and lots of snowmelt, my March trips haven't been real productive. In milder years, March fishing seems a little more productive with a mix of drop backs and jacks that enter.

It's so cold that when we drove past Athur on 422 last Sunday we didn't see a single shanty or ice fisherman in the places you could see from the road. Question for the hardwater guys that are tough/crazy enough to get out in this weather: Does an extreme cold front like this shut down/change the bite though the ice like a cold front would tend to do on open water?

Pork, I mean this as a serious question...do you work in a science or environmental career? You speak about climate change and global warming as an "insider" rather than one of us peons. I'm curious.

And to the real topic of this thread-this stinks!!! This winter and last years have hampered any kind of fishing for me. I will ice fish on occasion, but the super cold temps are too much for me. Last year I caught steel in early or mid March in lower elk, and that was a couple days after ice out. Fishing was productive in the afternoon especially once it warmed up. Imo there is no way to be sure what these conditions will do to the fishing. Well, one thing we know maybe-some of the holdovers will be dead meat at ice out. Those ice flows will crush the steel. But the key is for the lake to thaw out, then ice jams clear out. Who knows when the lake will thaw? I'm guessing it'll be even later than last year. I'll look forward to Craig's pictures of some ice piles overflowing into the parking lot at walnut!

Nope, peon too. I'm far from an insider, it just interests me. I took some environmental science classes in college, 20 years ago when I was figuring out what I wanted to do. But not interested enough to make a career out of it. Although I did hang out with a bunch of those hippies through school... I enjoy watching the Weather Channel, reading articles on Weather.com, Weatherunderground or Nat Geo about weather patterns, ect. I also find it ironic when I hear people try to claim that it is so cold outside, that it disproves global warming. When in essence it is the opposite.

Very clever. Much the reason that I spend so much time looking at weather too. Best fishing under the right conditions. Although, now days, the right conditions are when I'm not working, coaching, honey do list, ect.

Nearly 81 percent of the lakes' surface area was covered with ice, the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory reported Friday. That was down slightly from more than 85 percent the previous day — a glitch that probably happened because strong winds broke apart some ice and created open spots detected by satellites, said George Leshkevich, a physical scientist with the lab in Ann Arbor. But with forecasts calling for frigid weather at least through the end of the month, the ice cover may keep expanding, he said. It's grown rapidly as temperatures have plunged this month, nearly doubling over the past couple of weeks.~ The Associated Press - By By JOHN FLESHER - AP Environmental Writer Climate Change (aka: Global Warming) A natural phenomenon exploited by certain highly educated people who wish to further their own agendas.
