There is no way 8 miles of Elk is posted.

I believe it.  Look at the length of creek from the pavilion above the legion hole all the way up to the wire below Folleys.  That section alone is about 6 miles.   Then add in all the other short sections on lower and middle Elk, as well as all the posted areas above the McKean hole where very little water is open.  It's probably more than 8 stream miles, if you account for how the creek bends and turns like an "S" shape along the way in certain places.

Anybody own one of these.   You can figure it out on Google maps with the measuring tool as well, but it would require plotting a number of points.

It doesn't take very long to walk a mile.  Unfortunately I apparently started fishing the Erie tribs a year or so after the wire rope was put up and haven't ever fished anywhere below it down to route 90.  How many stream miles do you think are between the pavilion upstream from the legion hole to the wire rope at Folleys?

6 miles can't be that far off; when I print the map out and draw a straight line from the pavilion area on Google maps to the area where the wire below Folleys is, and compare that to the 1 mile distance legend it's about 4 miles.  Now consider the stream doesn't flow in a straight line and how the stream makes huge very large S turns the entire way up stream from 90 to Folleys, I would add at least 1 extra mile if not 2 miles for the S turns to make 6.  So I'm guessing it's between 5 - 6 miles based on Google maps.

To satisfy my own curiousity, I plotted a line on Google Earth loosely following the streambed from the pavillion area up to roughly where the wire crosses the creek below Folleys.  According to Google Earth it is 7.8 miles.  I plotted this pretty quickly so there is likely some error in that number, but I doubt it's more than a half mile either way and probably much less than that.

Is that entire stretch posted now?

I'm pretty sure there is an easement somewhere just upstream from 90, with no way to legally get into it or access it.  So I'm under the impression that the entire stretch is currently posted.

Instead of complaining about the closed water, why not put an effort in to reduce the amount of dead water on water that is open to keep more fish in those sections and spread out angler pressure?

For the most part the conversation on this topic has been intelligent and calm and I thank you  all for that but the last thread does not fit that description. I don't have an answer for the problem that would solve anything in the state of Pa. So since I started this tread I am going to just back out and let you all try to solve it.
Thanks for listening to a sad out of state fisherman.

What's the difference between swimming up the creek in a wet suit and walking up it in waders, when one third of Elk is ankle deep during normal low flows?   Another one third is posted, so that leaves about one third for the fisherman to actually be able to fish and that third is going quick these days.

Wow yinz sound like I did when I was a kid and everyone went home early for dinner. No one will play with me!!
Must be the winter blues and cabin fever.
Yes it stinks that more water is posted. But there's still plenty of places to catch steelbows. When (if) the ice melts, and after all heck ensues with ice jams and the creeks clear ahht, I look forward to dancin with some feesh again. Won't be long now!

Thank 's to the Pa. Fish Commission we have a much stronger and more aggressive fighting fish than the Steelhead in our area! The smoking hot Hybrid Striper is like a Steelie on steroids ! And the lakes and rivers are not posted wide open to all. Pinners would not stand a chance on holding these locomotives! Well, maybe the small ones under 5 lb.s. These are for major league fishing players. Fill the rivers and lakes with these and forget about that shoulder to shoulder combat fishing.

But captn, i like shooting fish in a barrel!  A pod of 25-50 fish in a pool the size of a postage stamp looks a lot more enticing than rivers and lakes where i can't see the fish.  Plus i can SNAG the steeliez with ease.....

Believe it or not there was a guy that did that at the mouth of Walnut years back. He had a delivery truck loaded with coffee , fries, soft drinks, donuts stuff like that. The first time we stopped by there to check the creek I started laughing " now I've seen it all" ! Ten minutes later I was eating fries and sipping on a coffee thinking you know what, this isn't too bad !!!!  LOL
