Catch & release steel?

Gentlemen,
I read on here all the time about people claiming too many fish are "leaving" the creeks on yellow ropes.  And the lack of good fishing.  So by a Simple Yes/No response, how many of you would support a Catch and Release rule for all the tribs from Rt 5 to the lake.  With the exception of designated handicapped areas like the Wall or the launch area on Elk.  I'm not asking for Long dissertations about 'fisherman's rights"  just a simple Yes/No -  Agree/Disagree posting.

NO-1 fish per day limit everywhere on all tribs.
No special areas for fly guys...why not spin fishing only?

No special regs too many now as it is.Catch and if desired to keep as long as within legal limits!!! Support 3cu and support increase in fees. if u got 14 bucks for each smoked steelhead u certainly got enough for an increase if liscense fees.

i've kept one fish in the years that i've fished for them and had it mounted.  wish i would have used the money for tackle instead.  i've had buds give me a fish to smoke and it was okay, but just okay.  i've no desire to ever keep another but i have no problem with someone roping a single or two.

i'm more into c&r hunting myself.

No.

Instead, take Conneaut, Elk, and Twenty Mile Creeks and impose a Delayed Harvest (DH) timeframe where it would be illegal to harvest or possess a steelhead from September 1st until December 1st.  On and after December 1st, DH regulations would cease and normal limits would apply.  So catch & release in the early season to give the fish a chance to work up the creeks and to give the C&R anglers plenty of opportunities.  Fly, spin or pin - all are welcome.

Anglers looking to harvest can hit any of the other tribs throughout the entire season, or wait until 12/1 to harvest on these special DH streams.

I live with fear every day, and sometimes she lets me go fishing.

keep your limit
it is a put and take recreational activity in extremely small watersheds
who wants to catch a beat up fish that had been caught 10 times in as many days

even with the current c&r rates there are too many beat up ugly fish

Plus with many peoples "idea" of C&R... the fish would be better off bonked

Re: Catch & release steel? 2014/12/02 12:00:36 (permalink)
No need for catch and release sections.  Even with reduced numbers of fish returning, there are still very un-natural numbers of steelhead in the tribs for the size of the streams.  Last time up I was fishing over a pod of at least 50+ fish, in mutiple holes of a single stretch on Elk, they looked like a black swath through the water.  Caught 8 - 10 fish both days I was up, and lost others.  What more do we need?    Do I really need to catch 20 or 30 a day instead of 10?  I'm not sure it's even more enjoyable to me when there is no skill at all needed to catch one after the other.

I would be in favor of that but need an allowance for fish that are bleeding or hooked deep.  Also in favor of lowering to 2 elsewhere as Ohio does.

Fish numbers aren't the problem.
Access is.

Deem Elk navigable (there's a boat launch on it) open up another 10-12 miles of stream.

1-Fish limit from August 1st to November 1st then 2-fish till trout opener.

1 steelie = has much meat as 5 stocked trout.

Posted property becomes catch release only with a $15 tag required to support tax cuts to the land owners for doing this. No need for new parking areas let us walk and use those funds for something that truly does benefit the "world class" no-fisherie. Better monitoring of high trash areas to bust the pigs and if caught revoking their fishing rights for the year.

would definitely support a 1 or 2 fish limit but that will be the day I spend $15 for a slimer tag so the people who live on these creeks can get a tax break.  ever see the homes they live in located on these creeks?  Increase my spending for somebody elses tax cuts?  I don't think so!  Am I going to get a tax break to unpost my land to allow any and all deer hunters, slobs or otherwise, have access to my property?  They can keep their tax break; there's a reason why people post, and it's due to a handful of pigs that ruin it for everybody, whether you're hunting or fishing.

KJ: Ohhh so true, so many people doing the steelhead punt when C&R, or gill raking while holding for a pic or dropping the fish on the hard shale while it squirms out of your hands while trying to hold for the pic. Then these fish are put back. Your right those fish would be better off on a rope......

NO.
One steel, one brown per day would be good.
Gotta throw something in there for the oddball salmon that shows up everyonce in a while.
but three is too many in my opinion.

I wouldn't have any issue with a C&R section, although not sure if below Rt. 5 would fly.  These areas are jammed packed, and telling these folks to go elsewhere is just asking for trespassing and crowding out the lesser crowded areas.

Like said, it is a put & take fishery.  Also agree that most aren't doing much with survival on poor C&R.  I rarely see guys keeping more than 1-2 fish.  Then again, I usually shy away from lower Elk or Walnut when in prime season.  Whether it is guys that want to keep 3, can't catch 3 or what seems to be the split on this site of either C&R only or taking 1-2 home for the smoker/table.  I have nothing against anyone keeping 3 fish if they are going to be consumed.  Not everyone is 1-2 hours or less from the lake.  If guys with 3-4+ hour drives that can only make a trip or two per year take home 3-6 fish and consume them, more power to them.  Obviously a little different if it is a guy that fishes much more often and keeps 30-50+ fish per year.  I don't see that being the norm though.  I also don't see why they'd change a law to stop what is the minority of anglers that truly abuse the limits.

1 steel is plenty
i think that would atleast slow the snaggers that make trips to the van 3 fish at a time.

and FYI, In-Fisherman magazine ran an article 1 or 2 issues back about a study done in Germany on C&R northern pike and how this practice affected their growth rates, feeding, reproduction (moot point for steelhead), etc.  I always suspected this was not a victim-less practice.  C&R may be great for the fishermen, but not so much for the fish.  They are after all a living organism and not playthings simply there for our amusement.

I find it absurd that anyone who keeps fish would ever make the remark that the fishing isn't as good as it used to be.  Let them go and there will be plenty to catch.  Not brain surgery.

You got it Bings !    Just some food for thought does anybody know what the stats are for fish returning the following year if they are released ? I think the natural mortality rate is much greater than most people think. I keep very few fish but I don't have a problem with a 3 limit if they are going to die anyway in the near future.
