I seer people here writing of brush piles, I think at Pymatuning. (I could be confusing Shenango posts with Pymy posts.) I was trying to find a nice (non spot burning way) to find some of those brush piles without being an A- hole. That's all. Let's say I don't know where the brush piles are and I am trying to locate some of them. Is there a typical water depth/structure/lake feature that the brush is dumped into? So I could ride around the lake at areas with that depth level with my fish finder on, and when I see something that could be a brush pile I can mark that spot to come back to it? and then be relatively certain that it is brush and not weeds? Thanks. -Roy

Roy, brush piles are dumped in the lake at all levels. It's a common practice to sink Christmas Trees/brush by dragging the trees on the ice(Which may not occur this year.), anchoring with cement blocks then allowing the brush to sink when the ice melts. Most of these fish habitat are created by volunteers or anglers wishing to create their own private fish magnets. You should be able to find what appears to be brush piles on your fish finder, unfortunately traditional sonar does not give great detail when looking for such fish habitat. However, should you find what is referred to as a 'blob' on the sonar and there is fish symbols appearing at the same time, it would be worth marking the spot. Personally I would recommend, if you are not already, becoming familiar with the north end of the lake and work your way back from there. "The stumps" is no secrete when it comes to catching fish, including walleye, in the spring time. In the meantime, use the Navionics App as a GPS/Plotter to enhance your fishing enjoyment with the kids, until such time you have built your own fish catching logs. If I could find the darn fish and catch em I'd have no problem in giving you the location(s) and, I wouldn't care a bit about "spot burning". PS. Trade secrete: every time I get hung-up I mark the spot, I figure it's a brush pile and I mean to tell ya, looking at my log(s) there is a bunch of brush in that lake. My lures and baits too! Tight lines and think Spring.

Navionics app lets you mark way points. Mark just about any brush pile you find, whether fish are on or not, as they might be some other time. I'd turn off the "Share Data" in the settings, since you don't want everyone in WPA to know where you marked things... Also, turn on the "Auto-Lock", so it doesn't go blank screen after 30 seconds of not touching your phone. It's a great app. Not as detailed as the chips that you can buy, but works great. It shows creek channels and sunken road beds, which aren't always accurate, but gets you pretty close. Just watch your depth finder drop, and throw a way point marker. Once you get the hang of it, it will catch you more fish. I'd practice with it at home a bit. I didn't and took me a good 10 minutes how to figure out marking way points on the water... If you don't have a DC outlet on your boat, you will probably want to add one. ~$10 for one at Wallyworld or Autozone, ect.

Your more than welcome Roy and the neat thing about those brush piles, once in the water they are no longer private. Now go catch some fish and heed Porktowns advice on turning off the "Share Data". Not that there is anything wrong with sharing data (with me) but, they charge you for the App so, let Navionics go find they're own brush piles. Hope to see ya on the water in the spring, tight lines.

A couple days late but: I was on the east side of the lake on Saturday about 1.5 miles south of the causeway. There was 2 to 3 inches of ice. It look to me that the lake was locked up all the way across. Didn't fish, I'm to fat to trust 2 to 3 inches, though it didn't break or crack under my weight. -Roy

Ice was 5 to 6 inches on Saturday on the south end of the lake, and yesterday it looked like the surface was melting fast. Saw about 6 to 10 ice fishermen out on the south end on Saturday and a few on the north end. Robinson's reports the north end still has 5 to 6 inches. Richter's has a picture of a 10 pound walleye on their Facebook page that a guy caught on Saturday. The next 4 days are supposed to be warm, so I don't know that the ice will last till next weekend or not. I didn't fish either day, was doing work on the cottage. Roy

Congrats on the boat. I'm heading to Harrisburg to the sports show going to make a day trip, leaving at 5:30 AM returning sometime late at night. The ice is Ok and going to get better with the cold weather coming at Author, not my favorite lake but I need some fish, not into bass fishing, but medium 7" to a few 8"s gills are easy pickin. Mix a few nice crappie and few perch and it's a fry. Good luck with the boat, your boys will have ball.

Congrats on the boat crappiefisher. Maybe I will see you at Pymy this summer. Was at Pymy on Saturday and ventured out on the ice to about knee deep, just to see what it was like walking on unsafe ice. Ice was 1 to 2 inches thick. Very thin at the shore. Could hear the ice starting to crack as I moved across it and spudded the thickness every 10 feet or so. Looked for bait fish in a small creek not far from our place and spotted a couple of 3 to 4 inch long gizzard shad (I think.) Found a few fossils in the rocks along shore, then called it a day and went back into the cottage and build some shelves in the laundry closet to store my fishing tackle. :) -Roy

Anyone try making rod holders with those plastic milk crates for drifting? You can keep the minnie bucket in it & have some tools etc. attached to the front or back with the pvc any angel on each side. Or you could flip it over & have a nice foot rest. crappy

Geez Captain, you must of just missed the ice rescue operations that unfolded in the area of Jamestown launch today. There is a thread of the rescue along with some pictures under the forum 'Rescue at Pymatuning 2/23/16'. Isn't that area of the river beautiful, thankfully the PFBC hasn't trashed the water with trout.......... yet.

I've been talking with Bill about the incident but never thought to ask him what time of the day it was. Bill is an avid walleye angler and fishes Pymie almost any day he can launch his boat. We both have been getting antsy waiting for the Jamestown boat launch to rid itself of ice and just yesterday, were wondering how things were looking. That's when Bill figured he would take a trip and see what he could see. Lucky for the guy, who is Amish, that Bill decided to visit the area, had a phone and, knew what to do without hesitation. I for one, am proud to, call Bill a friend. BTW, Bill may be a distant neighbor of yours.
