great map kjh... i've never seen it and it really puts it into perspective how much of the tribs are private land.

DarDys In PA private property does not need to have any visible signage and those entering without permission can be considered as trespassing.
So there are essentially three types of land - public access, posted private property, and unposted private property. The first two are pretty simple to understand. It is that third one that I fear. I can see myself entering the stream on a public access point and then little by little working my way up or down stream. 50' here... another 100' there. Before long and without realizing it, I may be on unposted private property. It is 100% my responsibility to know where I am, and I fully respect the rights of the land owners. Some grant access and others do not, so do you have any advice on how to know if you are welcome or not? I've read that you should ask for permission before fishing on unposted private property, but wouldn't that drive the land owner nuts having their doorbell ring all season? I'm just trying to do things the right way so you'll have me back again next year.

I live with fear every day, and sometimes she lets me go fishing.

freshwaterdrumRCan't wait to see the people who follow the guys with nets. As soon as they release the fish from the nets above the falls I bet there are people standing over top of them trying to catch them. It will be just like the guys casting for trout as soon as they come out of the truck lol
sounds like most of the people who post on PAflyfish. technically... the only public fishing locations are the ones in the yellow on the the map here http://fishandboat.com/steelhead.htmdirect link to map - http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=ea013d06224f4f618dbf42ead8a42812 anywhere else and you are on private property and can be asked to leave at anytime
wow, I had been wondering why there wasn't a map like this. There is, and that's crazy how little water is public.

Wow, this is an excellent post! Everyone should study this map. It is the only one that shows the complete easement areas. The PFBC general map is too vague.

When I bring up the map, I only see 2 yellow areas but a lot of public access water that you may fish that isn't marked.

Stepping back and looking at the amount of money generated by trib anglers during their trips to Erie, the hotel stays, fuel purchases, food, tackle, teasers tab etc.. At what point does that money become more beneficial to the local economy then say, the money generated by a handful of stream posting landowner's school and property taxes? It is to that end I ask the politicians who have oh so many lawyers to "follow the money"

This kind of statement always make me laugh. Incase you haven't noticed, Erie would "survive" without the stream angler money. Take a ride over by Millcreek or The Downs. Every restaurant is packed, every hotel booked and I venture to say, not too many trout dollars going toward that. Jus say'IN.. L8R

zoom in... to see all the tracks of public access you are only seeing the 2 largest that map is easements everything else is unsecured.... so even if unposted, it is still not secured public access, and presumably could be posted

The only businesses that would feel a substantial hit, are the restaurants (bars), cheap hotels and bait shops that are within a mile or two of Elk, Walnut, Trout Run, 20 & 16 Mile Creeks. Any business within 10 miles of downtown Erie, probably wouldn't feel any effect if the circus left town. Taking away Splash Lagoon, would likely be a larger hit to the Erie economy than the steel head fishery leaving.

Well, clearly the solution is to net the steelhead from horseshoe falls, put them into splash lagoon and take bets at the casino for how many Russians will snag fish from the cannon versus snagging the kids skimming at the wave pool. Everyone wins.

There was as article published recently about steelhead fishing and its effect on Erie's economy. I believe it was in the Post-Gazette. It stated that steelhead fishing added approximately $10 million to the local economy.

It's all Gods creation, but He gives us charge over it and yes people have personal property. To claim "it's the Lord's land" to give you license to trespass is ridiculous. This is a troll at work.

sorry I lost my temper everyone and especially for the profanity abbreviations but I was just repeating what the post's author was putting out there. But these people that think their fishing license grants them access to every piece of land with water on it drives me crazy. The thousands of dollars (4, 5, 6k and more) that stream dwellers pay in taxes every year far out trumps your $30 fishing license. Unfortunately the post that got me all riled up was removed by the author. Wonder why? Oh, and your petition's going nowhere. Do you think that politicians aren't going to see this as an end around to undermine land owners property rights to grant a handful of fishermen access to their land? Like someone else said: go buy your own land.

This is another no-brainer for the fish commission. Close the section of walnut from the falls down to Manchester Road. No fishing there and the fish go right through like they always did. $50 fix. 150' of cable and a sign. Rather have 20+ miles of walnut with fish than the stupid meat funnel that we have now. Fish cannon and netting options are fundamentally flawed though well intentioned.
