On the board for 2014 season

A quick trip to the Oswego River over the weekend was a moderately successful venture.  Tough low water conditions limited access to most of the hot spots but we managed to boat five kings.  The power company shut the water off on Friday dropping the water from 5000 to 1300 CFS making things tough.  Had a number of swings and misses so the fish are there you just have to put the time in.

I went there today to check things out. Saw a few fish jumping, but nothing else going on. No hook ups seen I walked up and down from the dam to the end of the wall several times.

PA-A lot of wall and ledge lizards when we got into town late Saturday afternoon.  Saw a number of fish foul hooked along the wall at Linear Park on both Saturday and Sunday.  A couple of guys who fished mid river along the ledge and the wall also fouled a few fish.  Of the three drift boats working the pool outside the release chambers we did extremely well.  I think the other boats had 1 maybe 2 fish but that's about it.  We managed to hook fish in each of the four locations we anchored but you really had to grind them out.
I did see a couple of successful fisherman coming down from the dam but not many.  One here, one there.
Clint- fish were rolling both days, more so in the pool outside the out flow chambers.

I hate to say this but Jack you need to start doing a serious rain dance.

The fish are there guys you just have to keep at them.

Fichy- Because of limited fishing areas it really is more combat like fishing similar to the Ballfield and Town Pool.  No doubt you would do well but I don't think it's conducive to your style.  However steelheading is superb during the winter/spring particularly with a drift boat.

Charlie , from my limited experience there I( about 20 tomes ) Im not quite sure it's a walker like yourself river. Maybe but I don't know, it wasn't for me .
I was a wall walker and dam wader in nov, feb and march for trout. Did that J- boat a few times and the ranger bass boat for browns in march- April . Strange river in a strange city . Requires way more respect of water then say the Hudson River down here ..

The other side was pretty good for steel, but they shut down the bridge over the canal and it is impossible to get over there if the water is running. That took out slot of good spots. Remember the need for a coastguard approved PFD if you fish in the water. The city and Brookfield are fighting now due to the sirens and '' over policing'' that is having a negative impact on fishing. The city feels they are losing revenue.   I have been there and the siren goes off, so you have to get out of the water. No release for 20 minutes and the yellow (all clear) light comes on. Then they wail the siren again and still no release. I have also seen the red light on when there was no release and Brookfield kicking folks out of the water when the yellow light was on.

Clint- it has changed a lot over the years.  You had access to some great water when you could still cross the bridge to Leto Island.  Too bad the shop and the bridge are closed.  Probably a good idea to wear a PFD when fishing that river because it can be treacherous.  We had to wear a PFD while in the drift boat, its required when you anchor up.

The sirens/lights did sound and verbal warning system was activated while we were there Sunday.  The release was negligible and had no impact on fishing.  We were hoping for a good release to send the fish into a feeding frenzy but no such luck.

Re: On the board for 2014 season 2014/09/22 22:08:20 (permalink)
I used to fish the wall in the middle. Almost got trapped there many times when the put the water up and you could not cross back. Wen the siren wailed you had limited tire to make it across before you were stuck. City would charge you to come and rescue you.
PFD'S are required or you will be asked to leave. If you don't the police will be called, seen it a few times. I fished it a few times from the wall up and down. Fairly nice in the winter as no standing in the water. You need a LONG net though. Good browns.

I USED to fish there years ago.In the beginning it was pretty good and caught many fish.As years went by it really became a combat zone. Now I refer to it as the "land of the muntants",and I'm not referring to the fish.If that was the only game in town I would stay home.

Since it is in the city you get ALL KINDS of people there because of the easy access. You also get a high number of snagged kids there as they can walk or ride their bikes there. Once the weather gets cold it clears out. You can fish at night  (above the utica bridge Sept to April excluded ) and get some eyes and occasional browns

on the board 2/3 but covered lots of ground and water. Reports of browns being caught ballpark and below. Saw a 12 lbs brown at a cleaning station. A few fishermen with so nice fresh cohoes in the town pool. It is slowly starting but still a long way to go. I will try to post some pictures when I get home. Just standing riverside waiting for daylight.

If I was close by, and not able to fish, I'd go listen.

Gotta squeeze the juice out of a bunch of peppers this weekend, though, while the family goes to Naples for the grapefest.

Pick up some tips for us !

I think it may be useless. The topic is fishing to pressured fish. We do not see any of those around here so why bother...............

Re: On the board for 2014 season 2014/09/26 15:08:16 (permalink)
I stink at this I guess.
Went 0 for 7 this morning.
Mostly just spit the hook after a minute or four.
I am blaming it on the 7x long streamer hooks I have been using giving extra leverage.
Let me keep my fantasy please.
Had one more line bump I was able to shake free without burying the point and a definate foul.
Saw 1 little steelface caught.
Done fishing at 10 since they shut down when the sun hit the run.
That is when I foul clarist the one.
Figure if I have to clarist them it was time to go.
I am sure there will be a bite period when the sun gets lower.

 TB were you down low.
  I stink even worse.
I did not even get a bump, was going to go early, but something came up and did not get there till 0900.  stopped at the LFZ and saw one little Steelie caught. Went to Pineville and walked around, people were at the holes RIPPING away, I mean no regard for anything. Only saw one fish hooked right and that was by me as I caught another one of those Atlantic smolt at my favorite spot. Only saw a few fish moving and as soon as they hit the rapids it was like a fumble on the field. 4 guys out of nowhere pouncing on them. Sideways ripping, rod tip in the water and the fish was roped. They were above me so I stood in the middle of the run, blocking any further movement, then they left. I met an officer in the lot when I was leaving and told him there were easily 30 tickets waiting to be written. Doubt he went down that far as he did not have boots on.  like said before there are WAY more people than fish, they are sitting in the holes and being ripped away at.  Saw a guide in the lot who looked disheveled, seems his clients did not come back to get him after he put the boat in at the lfz launch and came up and parked the trailer. Offered to take him up to Altmar. He told me a few places he found some browns  away from crowds in return for my favor. Rescued a chipmunk floating down the river today too.

Went to renew my hunting\fishing  license today and was told that they halted selling hunting licenses almost everywhere  due to issues with the paper. Asked if they were extending doe permits to compensate and she said no, guess no hunting for me this year. Gonna save that money and get something else. Go fishing anyway and we are butchering two cows so limited room.

Man just those few hours were pretty tough on my neck, but I am coming along bit by bit, plan on next Wednesday I think.  I am just going to fish for Steele and if something else hits so be it.

Good luck Clint, Charlie, Jack, Tuna, UF, TB, 3F, R3, Lucky and anyone else wetting a line this weekend.  Hoping you all find fish that want to play.
Clint, Do as I have done over the last couple of years and purchase your license and DMU tags online.  I'm a lifetime license holder so my new license is automatically mailed every year (since 1993).  The only thing I have to do is apply for DMU permits and if accepted they are mailed to me within a couple of days.  Register online with NYSDEC you won't regret it.  Almost forgot, you can download and print a temporary license (fishing etc.) until the hard copy arrives in the mail.
