John I think that's an Atlantic parr!
I've been busy all weekend. My father fished dsr yesterday morning and this morning with a few hookups between both days. I had 3 hookups Thursday afternoon but I do agree with you... Mid September and an empty river. I think the fish that the gentlemen told me about down low in the meadows turned around with the rest of the bunch that b-lined back to the lake... This season reminds me of middle to late 90's. Thanks for keeping the updates honest... Anywhere in and around town has gotten pretty heavy pressure that fizzles out shortly due to dead water... Must've missed ya at the ball park. I stood by the boat ramp around 930 for about ten minutes. Watched one guy spotting and whipping and he did hook up...

Yup clint... The slender body, large eyes, markings, rounded nose, forked tail.... All add up. They do look very similar to brown trout par but the eyes are a dead give away.

The mouth is also a giveaway Andy. Atlantic's mouth doesn't extend past the eye.

Chatted with the gentleman in the camp next to the one Im working on again today, they fished the dsr from 9 till 1 and again saw nothing. He told me he thinks theres a lack of fish because of the big flood 4 years ago when people were fishing in the parking lots, not what I think but everyones got their own ideas. I think they will be here soon and many of them at that.

John, there was quite a kill off with that flood. If I remember correctly the dsr got a spur of the moment special permit to physically put fish back in to the main river once flood waters receded... But I'm with you. They will come

The flood, coupled with alot of 2 and 3 year olds running last year may cut down numbers a bit. They will run and there will be an adequate amount. A few years of sub par salmon runs may not be a bad thing traffic wise.

A few slow seasons won't deter the masses from trekking to the best salmon stream on the lower 48.

From the reports I get from friends that fish the Manistee and Muskegon, a few folks would beg to differ Mr. Azzhat troll.

Sept 20 2014 there will be a huge run of kings followed by massive amounts of coho tues or weds (23-24). Those hoes always run mid week :)

Reports say the water temperature is still mid 60's. The fish will not run until it gets colder, but with the nite time temps, this should be soon. The Gennie is below 100 cfs and the temp yesterday was 62, so we may see nearly simultaneous runs in all these rivers this fall. The fish have been nosing around the mouth of the Gennie for 2 weeks now, but the thermal barrier keeps them in the lake. Noone went up to LFZ for the opener yesterday? L13

I was there today. Fished till about 11. One solid pull I missed one pluck that coulda been fallfish since I was fishing a 7x long #2 streamer all day and it wouldn't fit well in a fallfish mouth and a nice grab I hooked and had come off after 10 seconds. Saw fish rolling every now and then. Saw mostly dark horses but the one I had on was puter bright and I saw a couple more like that and a couple rustbows. Only other hookups I saw were a fallfish and some foulies.

Tunes, I really don't fish low anymore the crowds kill all enjoyment for me. However pulling some spoons from the driftboat in the estuary does draw my interest;) Only time will tell.

If the weather and winds are fair then launch that row boat right in pine grove. The estuary is funky though. Shallow , slow and lots of eel grass to foul them plugs ( which must be single hook ) If you got a kicker or feel very rowey ( non word ) then plug away right in front of the lighthouse. If you feel like just chilling and throwing a tight line with floating sacks there are a few holes in the estuary I could point you to. Wish I was fishing Friday !!

Knew I catch something even if it is only suckers. Lol Ok, ok. I retract that prediction with a new one. There will be NO salmon run in 2014. The lake reports were dismal this year which was a result of a massive winter kill from 80% of the Great Lake freezing over. Sure a fish here a fish there but totally not worth the gas money

That's why I was targeting chubs on Saturday. Don't let the word get out they're stacked up in all holes throughout the river

I heard it was the steelfaces that took a beating this winter. Not even worth the trip after Oct 1 or so.

Boy, I ain't familiar with big boys toys. We had a drift boat go by us on Sat. down in the wire. I thought about the big plugs they had dangling and now realize they were big freakin J-plugs and were all set to rip a hurtin' on anything they spotted. I thought they were hotshots at first , but looked a lot different in retrospect. I was wondering why they were drifting and looking rather than casting. Man, anybody want to sell me a bridge? UF out-chubbed me Sat. , I got a steenkin' smallmouth to ruin my count. I'm bringin' the 1 wt. next trip. Maybe the chubs and smallies will hang around until Jan.

In all honesty its pretty darn late for a smallie. Latest I caught was first week of September or so... Usually stop targeting them by mid august though
