Wading for Smallies?

I know that the Smallmouth fishing in the bay is better during the earlier parts of the year, but I haven't been able to get a vacation since last year, and with it finally coming up, is it worth the drive to wade the shallow parts around the state park to fly fish for Smallmouth? If they aren't likely to be in there, could I expect any other species to at least give me a fight?

I'd be driving up from Pittsburgh and wanted to check before making the trip. I'd be happy even if there weren't Smallies but I could expect schools of panfish or even some Bowfin.

Don't have any personal experience fishing the bay, but a buddy of mine just fished the bay on Sunday - albeit from a boat - and said he had one of the best days on largemouth he's ever had.  Said that most of his fishing was done close to shore.  Asked him specifically if he targets smallmouth in the bay this time of year, and he said no.  For whatever that's worth.

nwpaoutdoors.com has weekly fishing reports every Friday and usually gives a paragraph or two about fishing in the bay.

Very cool! I'd be happy catching Largemouths too! Thanks for the link, I'll check that out right now.

    Or fly fish --- Creek.
I have not been there all year but with the water levels this year you could catch trout and smallies maybe or not just a thought...WCW

    luvin,
I doubt that you'll get any smallies at this time of the year but you should be able to get into all kinds of largemouths. Think poppers especially towards evening.

'Cause my vacation is already scheduled. I hope to get up for a day of Steelhead in Novemeber. I've fished the creeks for Steelhead many times, and want to try something different.

Sounds like a winner! I'm a little more easy to please than a lot of guys. If I were to get a limit of Perch (of good size) on the fly, I'd be just as happy. Catching (and at least mostly releasing, if not completely releasing) Largemouth over 15 inches would be a good time. I'm pretty happy as long as something puts a good bend in my rod a few times through the day. 8-)
