kinzua

My son & some of his friends are going up this week-end to float the Allegheny. Can anyone tell me what the discharge rate from the dam should be to be good for canoes & what would be the maximum safe discharge flow? thanks  btw they have done this before, but would be nice to know in advance what the conditions are.  sam

You can access the information your looking for by searching outflow rates at Kinzua. We both know the flow rates change overnight so updated info can be important. I have floated and jet boated the Allegheny from Tionesta to Kennerdel and know of only two places that could give novice floaters a problem. That would be at Oil City and down river at Reno. Both places can be walked if need be.

The outflow of Kinzua is regulated, as may be needed, to promote recreation on the Allegheny.

Hope this may help and happy fishing.

There's also a large man made hole near the chemical plant in warren. It can flip a kayak pretty easy. My buddy lost a tackle box and rod there. It was too deep to retrieve and the current sucks downward.

Google search Allegheny river levels west hickory and click on water.weather.government site that comes up. Normal depth and flow are around 3.75 to 4 feet and 2 to 3 flow(kcfs). Supposed to be up close to 6 ft and 10 kcfs of flow this weekend, that is to much for a canoe trip if you ask me. Been floating the Allegheny for 20 years from Buccaloons to Tidioute and always use that gauge when deciding when to float, its the only one up in that area even though it is a few miles donwstream of Tidioute. Those flows will have it running pretty fast and deep. Hasn't been many weekends this summer that you could float safely.

Just saw this post now, but the Allegheny is up & ripping & muddy.  I cancelled my trip there this weekend.  It's probably fine for canoeing, if they are experienced as you say, but will be bad fishing at best.  There will be debris in the water too.

That stretch (Buckaloons to tidioute) is hard to top in terms of beauty.  That should be a really fun trip.
