Lake Arthur report 8/9

Arthur finally lived up to its dead zone reputation for us today.  Water was murky, pretty much everywhere.  At 8am the water was 74 degrees and by 3pm it was 80.  No idea where the fish are or why they aren't biting.  We managed one cat for the box and barely anything else.

Still a great day on the lake.  Nice breeze, temps weren't too hot until later in the afternoon.  Needs to stop raining so the lake can return to normal.

We couldn't keep the cats off of the hook last weekend, in between showers and some thunder.  Seemed like they were on like crazy when it wasn't raining and stopped when it was.  I opted to try the Yough this weekend instead.  Big mistake.  Not even a bite.  Water was brown, but didn't seem too high.  Some fish jumping, talked to a few guys and none of them catching.  Sounds like my day would have been similar at the lake.  A few more weeks and fishing should start heating up just about everywhere.

I floated the kiski from roaring run to river's edge on saturday.  Besdies the fact that there were approximately 1290348938473 other people canoeing, kayaking, and the occasional float tuber, i only saw a handful of fishermen.  one dude in a yak by the vandergrift bridge and a few others on the shore.  i didnt bring my gear and in some ways that made me sad and others it made me happy.

River.  Tried launching my old 12' tin Craigslist special at Smithton, after reading old threads on where to launch.  Didn't happen, the Nightman Lane access that someone mentioned was completely overgrown with weeds.  Smithton Beach was too long of a drag over gravel alone for me.  Opted for Cedar Creek.

Hmm.  I floated a portion just upstream of you & I wouldn't have called it brown.  Pretty much how it always looks, or rather, it doesn't get a lot clearer down that far.

Ha!  It was a very peaceful day.  My fishing buddy remarked afterwards that I hadn't uttered a certain foul word even once.  Namaste!

Going to night fish Saturday if the weather man says gtg.  That should result in a spicier story... always some special clowns out there at night.

It was definitely more stained than the past few times fishing there. I know it's never clear, but it was pretty dark and brown, with some sort of stuff mixed in with the water. Not sure what the stuff was. A guy on a nice float boat that I chatted with mentioned the color being off. It didn't seem up, maybe 2 feet of visibility.

Hmm. Maybe Jacob's Creek was kicking in some muddy water?  I was upstream of there.  Regardless, the Yough has been off all year.  Smallie fishing has been slow at best for me.  Still getting a couple of fish every time out, but not 15-20 like last year.  And the ones we are catching are mostly dinks.  Seeing more walleyes chasing & eating flies, but the bass fishing has kind of sucked.

Where do you launch at? I'll have to try my fly skills out on my tin jalopy. Not as much stuff to hang up on as my other boat. Can always get out and wade areas as well on the Yough. I'm not a great caster by any means, and sitting down casting is pretty bad for me, usually hitting water on my back cast. My tin boat is not made for standing... I have some glass minnows that I tied for use at the beach this year, that I think would mimic some of the shiners that I've caught in the Yough many years ago. Guessing they are still part of the forage base.

Couldn't buy a bite at Arthur yesterday for my son and nephew.

Chris, I'll look you up in Oct./Nov. if I can make it up that way. I didn't realize how much fishing time a dog would cut into... Hopefully in a few years he calms down enough to take along.

    Sounds good.

We managed three nice cats between 8 and 9pm but once the sun dropped the lake was dead.  Maybe caught 6 small bullheads by 1:30am then we fled before that monster storm hit.  Just what the lake needed... more rain.  Water looked like pea soup.

Thought about fishing 528/prop but I don't know that area and hate to try new lake in the dark.  Better to play it safe.
