Man, I can't wait until the sharks are in and these summer doldrums are over. Yesterday, I finished a job early and cruised a canal for sight-able carp. These fish are ridiculously fussy and split soon as a fly line hits the water a little hard. I used a 5 wt. Sage XP (used to be our former moderator's favorite rod- he used it on steel) with a 4 wt. fly line and a 14' leader. I used flies from a steelhead box, instead of my usual carp concoctions. One took a chartreuse steelhead hammer, and the other one an egg. A few weeks ago at this spot, I ran into an Orvis guide and his buddy from Colorado that is an editor for Carp Pro magazine. They got skunked, so I feel this old dog did OK. Then again, I started chasing them decades ago, before it got popular(they just had a carp seminar at the Orvis Flagship store). People use to look at me like I had 2 heads when they saw me fishing for carp with a fly rod. I bet 2bob had the same. They were kinda small, one about 5, the other maybe pushing 6-7 lbs., but a good battle for the 5 wt.. At least it was sight fishing and a little bit of prep for the season ahead. C'mon, salmon!

I dunno maybe 25 years ago or so my local TU chapter put out a poll asking what members did when the streams got too warm for CR fishing.
There were some exotic trip guys, some large and small jaw guys and guys that just didn't fish.
I was the only guy that answered carp fishing and when the results came out they made fun of me( it was all nameless of course).
All these years later I would like to
A) rub their noses in it.
B) wish I had never mentioned it cause it got pretty tough to find a place after a while.

2b, B. is THE answer. I mentioned a couple of areas to some sumbeeches
at Orvis trying to do them a favor, now anything near a road is overrun. Carp live long and learn lots. Pressure makes them almost impossible sometimes. Gotta keep upping the game and walk farther. Geez, we gotta share some notes...
Bear, if it's that same pattern you linked to before, I'm sure it does. Most of my sight fishing is in shallow water with small flies that make little disturbance. Big flies are a luxury I have in the spring only. Bunny leeches are excellent. I might have to try and look that thread up again, I know dobsons are good for steel. Just haven't developed into a confidence fly for me yet.

yep same one,,,i'm lucky here on the susquehanna...I can cast to the next pocket up stream and drift it to where they are feeding
they are smart fish, and very hard to catch on the fly....I hate seeing the "bow fishing" tourneyments down here.
I was talking to a guy from Brittan that came into bass pro looking for carp fishing stuff, he was horrified by our attitudes and how we dis-respect those highly regarded fish.

Life can be different in different places- in Europe they are a game fish and often taken for table fare.

Carp were brought to America from Europe as a cheap source of protein for a growing nation. Carp can withstand a lot and are thought to be impervious to over 2000 pollutants.
I don't target them unless there's nothing else around and I've got the right fly rod. I find carp teasers work best: black with red legs.

Yeah, they're really hard to snag. You're one of the dilettantes that clog waters up. If you don't know what that means, look it up and learn something today.

LOL I'm sure you can tie those teasers on an 01 to 08 hook and snag them very effectively
