high point trip - 7/31/14

my buddy and I fished high point yesterday - first time there in about 5 years - last time we fished there the water level was extremely low in order to reduce weeds.
 
our favorite spots at high point were traditionally just off the weed line which was typically 11-13 ft of water down towards the dam on both sides of the lake.  we first hit 7-8 of these spots - which are now WAY out from shore from where they've been in the past and we got nothing - no bites at all - and we had great creek chubs, fatheads and crawlers. 
 
we were considering leaving then we just meandered more towards shore on the south side of the lake where there are now a few deadfalls (tied off to their stumps - appear man made) and found another weed line - between the shore and the weeds in about 6-8ft of water and started to catch all kinds of fish.
 
so, we went from 3 hours of nothing to 3 hours of fun.  catches included 6 pike up to 19 inches (and quite a few break offs when we were not using leaders), 3 largemouth bass best was 15.5 inches - two jumbo perch best was a 13.5 incher (huge!) - two slab crappie and a number of gills but very few of these.  small creek chubs worked wonders as did the fatheads and the crawlers followed in a distant third.
 
a pretty good day after an incredibly slow start - and as usual we had to fight the stiff west wind which seems to be a constant "friend" at high point.  I think the "inside weed line" was caused by the lower lake weed kill off followed by the lake refilling.
