upcoming season

I am starting to think about the upcoming season.
As it now stands I have Tues off most weeks.
Now I am trying to figure out when it would be best to spend my Vacation time.
Anybody got any plans.

Honestly I do not get too excited about sharks anymore, they are just frustrating seeing 100's around you and none willing to take.   Add into that the abhorrent,  drunken, I drove 6 hours to get here behaviors and it is a downer.   I say that now, but we all know I will join the battle.   I will be weekends only after mid September.  Columbus day weekend will be for perch and eyes.   Thanksgiving week will be the start of steel for me

I've tied about 300 flies (1/0 red octopus hooks)...Have plans to fish the DSR from the last Saturday in September through the first Sunday in October.  My extended family rented a very nice log cabin on a lake out past the hatchery.  Bought a new Subaru outback to haul my gear....Last year I made six trips to Pulaski, a bit excessive.  This year, I'll get my fill over 8 straight days.

Clint since I have Tues off ( at least if the new manager as of end of Aug doesn't change things up)
I will go for mornings mostly.
I don't really care if I get kings or not.
If nothing else it will let me see any changes since last year.
Vacation days start after mid Oct.
Anybody other than Clint that matters in the least making firm plans.

I'm probably not going to get out by October 1, but I have enough saved vacation to plan for most or all Tuesdays in October, maybe a couple of days together in November with the holidays in the first part of the month.  I really have no interest in dealing with the mob scene in September and even early October.

So if you need help with gas money, I'm planning on being able to do at least the Tuesdays.  We'll have to see how things evolve as I have new management as of now as well.

We're going back to a former  long time vacation schedule that had me waiting and wading in the salty froth for the striped cows to swim down from Maine in early Oct. . I'm going to split the difference between Cape Ann, Mass. and  the SR this fall. Somewhere in there I should swing up a major bendo in my 8 switch.  I might take an early trip down low for a day.  May never equal the  festival of miracles I had with Tuna a few years ago, but I can try.
Kind of fun to see a standing wave coming up river like a reversing falls and realize its all fish.

Lucky  I don't know how much notice you must give but until I see the new manager's plans I can't be sure it will be Tues this year.
Whatever day it is 1 day suicide runs will happen and you always have dibs on shotgun.

I wouldn't waste a vacation day before mid Oct either but since I will have a weekday off what the heck.
You know I usually can find a place away from the circus even if it means fewer fish.

I need to save 30 vacation days for the effect on pension, so I'm not likely to burn one on sharks.  But we'll see what transpires, just let me know ASAP as meetings get booked and then I can't get off quickly.

Last year DSR reported a push mid August. Not enough to drive up or take off work time for  but its gonna begin  just around the corner. Had some  low mid river action last August  -- keep your expectations low and hope for one a trip but your generally ALONE.

r3g3-I think the first reported push of fish (I saw video) was August 7.  The weekend after Labor Day and the following week has been good the last few years.  I like to hit those early fish and stay away when September turns into October.

As troutbum said, it was August 7 that the DSR reported salmon.  I was there over Labor Day weekend and all of those fish were dead.  The DSR was loaded with scores of bright silver and very dead salmon.  I think the air temp that weekend was running around 85 degrees.

So L13 what dates work best for you?
I can try to be tricky and request them as vacation and have another day as my day off.
If I can get them approved by my current manager it might work.
I could approve them myself but I don't know how that would fly.

PM if that would be better than hashing it out in public.

    Here is the 7/12-14 report.
got to lake on a beautiful day around noon sat.. It was so cool to meet up with a local and his wife at the tackle shop as we were filling the boat up with fuel.. B.S'd for a while then off we went to put in at mexico and gave the boat a little run to see her ride.. She went awesome so we trolled around in 80 fow out to about 120' Big zero and we decided to just have fun the rest of the day :

At first jumping into a shark infested water at 120 ' I seemed a little nervous but again it was awesome swimming with the fishes..
    Sun:
Big plans were made to take a friend out for the day.. When I awoke at 6am and looked at the marine forecast it was dim, small craft advisory.. He showed up around 7 and we gave it a try.. Busting our way out to about 100 fow it looked like that was far enough and we rocked and rolled while setting up gear.. Bobbing like a cork in 3-4' rollers SUCKED and our guest was a little nervous with a touch of green around his gills so we bagged it at 10 am .. Funny thing is we sat on the boat next to the fire ALL day sharing stories and just have a blast.. Fun day brother and hope you can make it out again when the Lady O plays nice..

    Mon:
what a change a few hrs can make, The lake was calm and off we went around 8:00
Headed straight out to 150 fow and set up gear pointing towards 200 fow , we were 5 miles out..
Finally a rod popped and it was game on for my buddy..
His first time to the area and his first ever salmon :)

From then on it was just a long slow troll day.. Nothing happening and called it a trip around 2 pm..
It was a GREAT time and I cant wait to get back (on the Lake) ..

Talking with others the fish are still WAY out.. 200 fow is a good starting point.. They also said the fish are on the smaller side this year with very very few near the 30 lb class..
We shall see what happens in a month but I personally don't see an early push happening this year.. The lake took a beating this winter and is just starting to set up a thermocline.

Tuna was great to get out with ya bud but as usual something always keeps us from fishing :) glad you guys hit the one on Monday... Looks like a hybrid ??? It was definitely a learning experience to hit that rough water so close in... And the uncertainty curve has definitely been broken... Thanks again man and great meeting your first mate as well... Had a blast man!!!

I got my first king last year on the 8th which beat my record of the 13th from back in 99... My season was cooked after the first week of September in which I believe two Bob posted up a lean mean fighting machine for me (as he put it exactly). Took a buddy out in early October and didn't even fish. Hopefully most folks are starting to understand the internet hype a little more and we won't be getting death run hero's by the thousands with little fish in the river. But yes the fever is heating up and hats off to tuna for being the first of the bunch to get slimed. There were always and will always be early fish as long as this fishery exists. Quantity and consistency of fish is another story though. Fish on boys!!!

Andy , Class act brother.. Now that you see she is a solid boat that can handle most of what the Lake can throw, you and your family are ALWAYS welcome aboard the Daisy Mae.. Even if it's sitting on the trailer staring at the lake for hrs on end LMAO.. The company was top notch !!!
I have to say myself, it was MUCH more fun then bobbing like a cork trying to fish..
Still have some learning to do and of no fault to anyone.. It's one thing to give up a hand tied $0.50 fly to the bottom of the river but I gave the Lady 0, $60.00  (3 lures) worth of tackle in a short time.. ugh.. Just throw more $$$$ at it and all I can do is smile, smile, smile ..lol Time of my Life !!

As for the River fishing :
If the opportunity arises that I get to fish with good folks here or take the boy (Rob S ) out for salmon then I will make the trip, otherwise I will wait until the silly season is over (which seems to go on forever) and head up for trout until the hardwater sets in..
For myself the area will mostly become a summer resident fishery for me ..

    Peace & Tuna

Charlie thanks ..  Being a life long walker myself by no means am I a Capt.. I will leave that job to my 3 year old little buddy ..  Someday these dreams of mine might find their way to them., the grandkids.  There is only so much real estate to any one given land or stream body yet there is lots of open water to explore. Right now I'm along for the ride trying to build the foundation..

    Hey---almost forgot--
When up for a few days last week the Jailhouse had good numbers of cars in the lot Friday and Sat evenings.
The work seems finished and  the place looks nice from outside.
Looks to be catching on- perhaps just  dinner crowd but did see some folks way back walking into the River area.
Good for Altmar- (fishing issues aside)-they are fortunate to have a thriving business there instead of an old rotting School.
Next time up will drive through the lot and check the license plates - that will tell if folks are locals eating out or coming in for the world famous Smallmouth fishery.
