you really can't run any deep divers off of dipseys and down riggers, so I would stick to worm harnesses in chartreuse and purples and the yellow/red diamond pattern. spoons in the same colors (don't be afraid to mix em up if these colors aren't working). shallow diving plugs may do the trick too. I would also pick up a new trolling rod/counter reel designed to hold 10 color lead core and troll 800 series Reef Runners in gator bait, a purple, wonderbread, etc. I would flat line this off the back. in 70-90 f.o.w. last summer, we were flat lining 10 color lead core back 6 to 10 colors. at 5 foot of sink per color thats 30 to 50 ft down plus another 15 to 20ft of dive for the reef runner.

To some Bookyishere, those Line Counter reels with a trolling rod are expensive as well as the lead core line, but they are worth your weight in gold if you are going to use them to any extent, particularly when you become proficient with them. Definitely give them some serious thought as they are great not only for the 'eyes, but any other fish species that you're targeting, especially so if they're going to the dinner table. [Just IMO]. They have their place just as any of the other methods have theirs. Also, while it's nice to own equipment for as many different styles of fishing that are out there, one doesn't need to be compelled to own all of them unless of course one has the resources to do so.

FISH, youre right, but when I made the change to the lead core last year, my buddies and I filled our freezers with walley. no more second guessing with how much weight was needed with snap weights, or how far back where to place them or stopping our retrieve to remove them before we netted our catch. will never go any other way. fishusa has a prespooled lead core that comes with the backing, the 10 colors of lead core and the leader. it took me about 10 mins to figure this stuff out, including repairing it when the need arose. i tell people to invest in the lead core okuma/large reel designed for lead core simply to stop them from investing in and trying other methods throughout the years. this, in my opinion, is the most efficient way to go, and once the investment is made, you're good to go. my lead core is pretty beat up, but I know how to repair it, add leader, etc, all from vids on youtube.

just tried doing a search for okumas lead core trolling rod and reel combos but got nothing. their search engine absolutely sucks since they redid their site.

Can you run the leadcore setups off of your boards? I'm afraid to run more than two leadcore setups down the shoot. I just started using leadcore this year. BH

unfortuneately bloody I can only run one lead core rod on each side. I think if my mast were higher and I had more of angle on the line connecting to my boards, I could get the lead core line to travel closer to the board, but as it is now, I can't. I only run 6 to 7 rods anyway. 2 off the boards, 2 dipseys, 2 flat lines, and 1 down rigger. I don't run a rigger on the side of the boat with my trolling motor due to that much weight being on one side of the boat.

Cool, thanx for the reply. I'm basically running the same setup, without the down rigger. BH

BH you can run more than one lead core per side. We run up to 3. Just make sure that your plugs are tuned and running straight and leave some spacing between them.

Were you running those Reef Runners without weight? If so they will only dive to about 28 ft or thereabouts.
