Yough River, Connellsville

I fished the Yough yesterday near Connellsville.  I had a decent couple hours.  2 of the 5 smallmouth i caught had sores on them though.  Has anyone else seen this and know what could be wrong with them?

My guess is the sores are a result of the spawn season... I couldn't find any information regarding the spawning habits of smallmouth specifically, but it seems that most male fish in general are very aggressive towards the females during spawn period to get them to dump their eggs. Spawn period also lasts 3-4 days and they are constantly rubbing up against rocks and whatnot.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

I hope they didn't look like this.  If so, contact the PFBC and let them know.  This has crushed a great smallmouth fishery in central PA.

I didn't know there were lampreys in there.  That's what the sores looked like. Good to know

How's the water looking? Looks good on the gauges but they mean almost nothing year.
Fished another creek today , gauge looked great, but water was chocolate milk!!! Would hate to drive an hour and be disappointed once again.

It was swimming downstream at the same speed as the boat, right at the surface, about 40 feet out.  About half a dozen casts, a good strip set and it was tite lines, brah!  We didn't know what it was until we got it to the boat, I had figured it was a snake.  Snapped a few pics then pulverized it to a bloody pulp with a pair of pliers.

What was the reason for killing it? Are they bad for our waters or what? I don't like to kill things for no reason. Just asking.

I'm not one to kill random things either but I find them repulsive.
