Smallmouth in the tribs

Gonna give it a shot early in the week with my 10 year old son.  Never targeted small mouths on purpose anywhere before.

Just wondering what tactics generally work well for smallmouth in the tribs - drifting minnows like for steelhead?  Jigs and small cranks?  Soft plastics?

Probably over thinking it - they're just dumb feesh.

Tube lures. Toss them out and twitch the across the bottom. Amber/brown colors work best when the water is clear. Bright colors if there has been some rain.

If the water is gin clear and the fish are skittish, flip some rocks are find crawfish. Smallies (even when spooked) have a hard time passing on a tail hooked crawfish.

Bigger fish are usually in the lower sections of the creeks, but fish make it up pretty far in the bigger creeks.

Have fun. Trib fishing for smallies used to be a favorite for me (pre boats). Much less idiots than steelhead season.

I have caught them on spinners and minnows under the float.
I have heard from many guys that tubes are the best like Uplander said.
Good luck and if you can post a pic of your boy with a biggen' and a short report afterwards.
I told the wife I would take her out for smallies on the tribs this year a good report would motivate me.

Small stick baits work well in faster water.

Thanks for the info guys, we gave it a shot on Tuesday.  Nothing really photo worthy but we found some and had a good time learning to do something new.
