Bait shops near Lake Arthur

Where do you guys buy your bait?  Assuming that you buy bait... if you seine your own you are my hero.  The streams are too cold still and I'm too old and fat to chase them around with a net.  I'm not opposed to hook and lining a bucket of chubs now and then, but small bluegills are easier to catch, I don't have to wade for them, and they seem to be the better bait anyway.  Oh, and they live forever whereas chubs are all delicate.  Anyway...

Pretty much always used O'Donnels on 19 just before 422.  They've been there forever, they have long hours and they only close like 2 days a year.  They also have the best selection of bait of the places I've gone.  That said, their prices are pretty high.  I don't sweat a $20 for bait but if you aren't making your own ice and you grab a soda or candy bar with your minnows you will be more in the $30 range pretty fast.  They also have counted the minnows for as long as I can remember.  Which is fine, you ask for 6 dozen you get right around 6 dozen.  But most other places don't bother with that, and if you are used to this place and then hit some other store where they just eyeball it you're going to be shocked how many minnows you get.  Overall I'd give this shop a B+.  Cant beat the location/convenience.

This year we've been going to Carlson's in Zelie.  I think that's the name anyway.  Nice old coot runs the place, tiny bait shack next to the Pizza Hut right on 19N.  They don't have the selection that the previous place has, but he always has minnows and shiners and redworms and crawlers plus some other common stuff.  The draw for us are his minnow prices.  Small fatheads are $2.75 for three dozen, and he isn't stingy with the count.  And he just raised that price a quarter.  $10 buys you too much bait here.  He's open every day at 6:30am, closes... at 4pm I think?  The parking lot seems sketchy but I get my 20' pontoon in and out with no problems.  He doesn't have much in the way of tackle but has some basic rigs hanging on the walls in case you forgot something.  The ice machine has been broken for years which means you'll have to cross the street to the BiLo if you need ice (and they dont open till 7 or 730).  Convenient to 79N (exit is just a mile north on 19).

We used to hit a bait shop on 422 right near the Butler Fairgrounds when we fished the East side of the lake but that's been 20 years now.  Suspect there's still a bait shop over there but I'm not sure.  Bait guys aren't much for having web pages and even when they do the info tends to be sketchy at best.  What's your bait shop of choice?  What kind of bait is on your must have list?

Last few yrs. if I ever needed bait, bought from Van's in Butler. I always get by the pound though. Buddy works at a limestone mine & they have a pond loaded with Fatheads. He is supposed to drop me a cooler off this week. They have another pond he wants to raise just Shiners in. Mostly use wild bait not from any shop & don't have a favorite one unless going after certain species.

Try Will's just outside of Zelie on 68 west.  Good selection, good hours, and prices were pretty much in line with Carlson's if I remember right.

This is what I'm talking about for business internet fail.  No website.  One map places it right on 19 where Hockenburg Motors is.  One map has it almost in Evans City on 68.  I'm guessing it is on 68 in that little plaza on the right before the power station / bowling alley (which is closed I think).  Probably there to service the sportsman's lake people in addition to Arthur and Hereford Manor when it existed.  I'll have to check them out, though that's the wrong way through Zelie for me to the lake.

It's past the power station by maybe a little less than a half of a mile.  Actually, it's not far from around the bend to the back entrance of the club (right at the base of the hill before Young's Custard Stand).  They've gotten a little more into selling things for turkey hunting too (mostly calls).  I agree.  They need to get with the times and have a website.

Roger's is a great place, small but carries a good selection of lake specific productive tackle.  He doesn't seem to count the minnows either.  Like most of the others, he's a nice guy and will give an honest report.  He'll also special order things if need be.  Only issue is, if fishing the South Shore or 528 areas, he is inconveniently located.  Easy drive from Neely's Point / Davis Hollow.  It would be nice if the park road connected to 528, but also nice that there are some areas of the lake that aren't as easy of an access.

I've tried it a few times, and 1/2 hour is the shortest amount of time it has ever taken to get to the Barkley Rd. area for Roger's...  I was hitting mostly single lane dirt roads, that you are risking killing a walker if going over 25 mph, and some I wasn't sure if private lane or not, so felt bad if trespassing.

Would be an awesome place for a house though.  That stretch between West Lake Rd. and Rohrer Rd. (how I go to avoid the North Shore Dr. when crowded - is a bit longer), is really nice.  Beautiful houses with awesome views, and 10 minute drive to scoreville.  Between Roger's and 528, I've got lost a few times, one time I passed what appeared to be a mansion tucked away in the woods.  I talked to Crappy about that place before, and confirmed that it is some millionare's place (I think Spoonchucker).  My favorite is the house in view of I-79, between Portersville/Prospect and 422 exit's, with the nice pond.  10 minutes to Arthur, 45 or so to Pymie, a little over an hour to Erie or just relax by the private pond.  Only issue (not sure if an issue) would be the noise of us motorists drooling over the place as we pass by.  Likely 1-2 cars per year coming close to driving off of the road, daydreaming that they lived there.  The lone house on the lake would be pretty awesome too, but imagine there are some unwanted visitors every so often.

     Pork,

The back roads from Barkley Rd. to Rogers' takes 'bout the same time weather going West Liberty Rd. or starting out from Lindey Rd., just over 6 miles either way & 'bout 15 min.  A very bad thing happened at that "mansion" a few yrs. ago. Horror film like

Yikes.  I just googled around, and found the story.  Abbott estate.  I retract my Spoonchucker comment, just know he lives somewhere around the lake.

I must be rounding up when I say 1/2 hour, or could be to the back area of the 528 launch.  Definitely takes me longer than 10 minutes.  Like said, if on the dirt roads, I'm doing between 10-20 mph.  I do the same down on Barkley & that back road behind the 528 launch.  I've seen others flying on those roads, so I guess 10-15 minutes is possible, if you know the roads.  I'd likely end up in a corn field going as fast on some of those tight winding roads.

Appalachian Trails on 422 right across from the Butler Fairgrounds is still open. Gear and tackle is a little pricey but bait itself is very cheap. Go there almost exclusively. Although I do only live about three miles away from there...

And... no website.  Seriously... $50 and a bag of tootsie pops will get you a website with your store hours, phone number and a fricking map.  Why is that so hard?

Luckily, you don't have any girls...

As for App Trails as mentioned, his prices seems to be based upon his mood...  Some days you spend $5 on 3 doz. fatheads, the next time in, it's $9.
