New York nr license
Anyone know how the New York license year runs ? Calendar year or other dates? Also, if anyone fishes trout over there on the inland creeks in chatauqua county, I would like some opinions on the fishing if possible. Thanks

They just changed it. Runs for one year from date of purchase.

When I fished in NY this past November the word was that the license year was going to change to run from date of purchase. Based on bingsbait post looks like it went through. I assume NR licenses remain available for shorter terms too.

I don't buy a PA license anymore as the best fishing is in NY. I am very happy about the license fee changes in NY. For you Erie denizens, the best fishing in the east is only 4 hours drive to the north. The SR makes anything in Erie look like a ditch.

H3Fisher Nothing wrong with the creeks in PA and plenty of fish to catch once you learn how.
Yeah I uzda' fish the mighty SR in NY a lot it is a great river. PA has ditches compared to NY and on average smaller fish. I now live in NWPA and can't get up to NY as much. I am wise enough to enjoy my time spent fishing either way. Using NY rigging in high water this spring has been great in the PA ditches especially since everyone has stopped coming MUP HER'. And the few people I see are clueless without being able to see the fish I averaged 2 doz fish a day this spring not great for PA but good enough for me and the 20 minute ride. Its not a contest boys and gals-NY/PA-BAIT/FLY-just go out hook some fish and ENJOY IT! My Y-LING rant is dun' WCW

Don't want to start a skunk spraying contest, but I fished the Erie tribs for 5/6 years and caught lots of chrome. But, there is no way that the steelhead fishing in the Erie area is even close to the challenge of fishing on the Salmon River IMO. I have a 4 hour drive to either area and I haven't been to Erie in 6 years. I just don't enjoy fishing in the smaller streams in the Erie area. It was fun for a while, but soon got boring and was pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel. Just my opinion............fire away......

Hopefully, for your sake, you've bought yourself casting lessons. Because the Salmon River video with you & your buddies, that was going around, shows you won't catch a thing in the J unless you've made massive improvements.

Yes, I would much rather fish all day and not get a bite but be thrilled by the "challenge" than catch big fish in large quantities.....said no one, ever. Well, i take that back, I'm sure a few of you prefer other places that require more skill and precision to entice a trout. But I'm a knuckle dragging yellow rope carrying bait fisherman, so what do i care? :)

Salmon River would be OK if it wasn't for all those salmon. I used to fish it quite a bit and now go up occasionally. To me, the salmon are more of a novelty and after catching or lining moldy, stinky fish for a few years, the novelty of it all has worn off. When I do go up, it's usually in late Aug or early Sept for that first run of fresh kings. These fish fight twice as hard as the half dead October fish and you don't have the crowds (at least for a few days). Day one starts on the DSR and from there, you follow the run on up for a few days. Of course, you have to drop what your doing and make the trip up on the first good report, but it's the best way to catch the best fish without having to deal with all the people. It used to be a great time when all the salmon died off and you had all this room to fish early winter steelhead. But those days are gone and are now resembling the early winter crowds of Erie.

And, I'd take the Lk. E. tribs over the Lk. O. tribs any day. Burt and Oak Orchard is mostly frog water. Everyone packs the runs below the dam or Archers as that's the only places you have flow. The crowds there can be ridiculous. You're usually stuck in spot for the entire day and you dare not step out in fear of loosing that spot. Yes, Erie has many more miles of fishable water compared to Oak, Burt and SR. It's less crowded and the people are relatively a nicer, law abiding bunch of anglers.

And you actually have to know how to fish to be successful down there.

Michigan gets fantastic steelhead runs, probably the best but their rivers are largely not wade able....I'd love to fish the St. Joe, but that's a huge river....
