Let's Talk Pymatuning

Live in New Castle but drove past Pyme today. Saw a few spots of open water up north. Won't be long. Please keep us updated on docks and fishing conditions and water levels. Won't be long.

I live 1/2 mile off the lake and I'm itching to get on the boat! I'll keep everyone updated as most guys on here know. It won't be long with the upcoming weather they're calling for. I'm going to try and get on the boat next Thursday or Friday but not holding my breath yet on that. Sunday 4/13 is more than likely going to be day one on the boat.

Thanks Frost. What launch do you usually use? Can't wait to get out. I picked up a bunch of spinning jig heads I can't wait to try this year.

I have my Dads cousin that lives in Andover Ohio. He has a pontoon boat up there. Gonna try to visit them this year and hopefully get them to take us out on the boat.

I use all launches on the pa side, depends on what I want to catch and/or where I want to fish. We keep our pontoon at linesville marina but I usually use my 17' bass boat. Snodgrass is the closest launch, but I like orchard, snodgrass and manning for crappie and walleye and Jamestown, causeway and linesville for bass. Really just depends on what I'm feeling like.

Frost do you know when the docks will be in a Manning? I remember they were in this time last year. Of course we didn't have 20" of ice last year.

Ok, so here I sit.  50 years of pymatuning experience, all boat fishing.   Ready to get the boat in but now surgery says that won't happen for a couple more weeks?  Any places, areas, in general that I could wet a line with a reasonable chance at some action?  Not really looking for table fare, just something to keep me from going stir crazy til I get out on the north end.  Unfortunately, wading is out.   Boat docks?  Causeway worth any effort?    Appreciate any input

Thanks,CF   Wasn't quite clear but had surgery over a week ago, just cant do anything yet.  I know I can't wrestle a boat around or bounce up and down.  Hurts to sit, hurts to stand, so I figured I would rather hurt standing with a rod in my hand tossing crankbaits rather than watching the idiot box.  Stilll hurts to climb in and out of the boat to get it the rest of the way ready.  Oh well....

You are right.  Never though about throwing to the pads.  Funny how you see something a hundred times but you never really SEE it!

Causeway this time of year always produces fish, everything from eyes to crappie and perch to musky cruising the warmer waters around the rocks. Other than that I really can't say as I'm either on the boat or wading. Of coarse you could always fight the guys at the wire of the spillway lol

Thanks guys.  Went out for a few hours yesterday, caught a few nice crappies.  Just good to get out.  Frost, only way I'm on the Spillway is with a loaf of bread!  Now in July you will find my Black Starcraft in stealth  mode all along that causeway/spillway area.   Big Cats!

Hi all.  Me and my brother are heading to Pymatuning for the first time next Friday.  Will be there for 9 days.  Normally we are after Pike/Musky, Walleye or Crappie.  I know the lake is huge so any suggestions on some starting points to find any of these species this time of year would be much appreciated!

Ya.  He made reference to Pymatuning.  Didn't want him driving up there, punching in long and lat and finding out he was at the wrong lake   lol

Correct. I gave him Conny. He said he was looking for Pike and Musky so I opened up my hummingbird and told him where I have done well with both over the years. And those are very good coordinates. No BS.

VJ   Since you  asked about Pymie, I'll talk to that point.    Can't go wrong with the north end this time of year (actually all year if you ask me, lol)  Anywhere from Tuttle Point over to Linesville and points North.   Looking at mostly 10fow or less.  If the weather is right, start in the stumps anywhere around Whaley or Harris Islands.    Because this lake is shallow, beware.  This lake can kick up its heels in a hurry.  It will start rolling whitecaps in a heartbeat with a stiff wind out of the North so plan accordingly and keep and eye on the weather.  Good Luck   Might see you toward the end of  your stay if you are on the north end.   Black and silver Starcraft with Merc20

Opsman I'm talking about the causeway between espyville and Andover (285). I wasn't talking about the spillway. I hit it from sure right after ice off for just about everything that swims in that lake. If I'm in a lazy mood I sit with worms on the bottom as well as minnows under a bobber. If I'm more active I'll walk the whole length and throw light jigs.

Yep, Frost.  That's what i thought you meant.  I like the causeway (at least that's what  I call it) that straddles the lake and the reserve too!   Not up by the spillway, but down further, heading towards Livesville.  Some nice bays in there also

Thanks for all the responses.  We were actually talking about driving over to Conneaut a few times as well.  We'll be staying at Linesville so the North end of Pym will probably be where we spend most of our time.

Re: Let's Talk Pymatuning 2014/04/04 14:53:39 (permalink)
yeah, well those "smaller" tournaments are getting a little goofy up there.  I know of a few weekends where I was there before daylight and there are guys in line to launch for a tourney that doesn't start til 7a!  Talk about a cluster!  Course they did look pretty with their jerseys and all.  Had to laugh, kept drifting past one guy in his "bass boat" and everytime we were within earshot we picked up a nice largemouth.   He, on the other hand, not so much.  Month of May I pretty much stay away on the weekends.   When I had a little smaller boat I used to put in down by the spillway and come out under the old railroad trestle, but this boat is too big, and that bay is just choked stupid with lily pads in May.

Don't know if the attachment worked.  This would be a typical smallie up there.

Ya, couple years ago.   He heads to college and I'm down a partner   But his middle brother has come back to the sport, and my wife loves fishing.   Actually the first date we went on was a trip to Linesville   Picked her up at 5am and she was ready to go.

Ops I'm actually talking about the actual causeway that is in the middle of the lake that goes into ohio. I do know where your talking about and yes that does produce some good fish as well at times.

Come beginning of May, majority of my fishing is bass fishing. I love pymy when it comes to bass fishing (obviously it can't compete with Erie smallies). Every year I pull out many 4+lb smallies and 6+lb bucket mouths. And yes I'm one of those tourney fisherman haha. I'm just hoping I can fish some with my work schedule this year.
