Lake Joanne
Does anyone on here remember the pay lake, Lake Joanne? If so, do you know what species of fish were stocked in there? I have heard many different rumors. Obviously there are panfish and large mouth, but I am curious what other fish may have been stocked in there.

Yes I remember Lake Joanne. My grandfather, a lifetime coal miner, who never drove a car, took up fishing in his retirement. My Mother drove him fishing there occassionally, I tagged along as payment for the ride. They stocked the big lake with trout and channel catfish. I believe there were also Northern Pike. The lower lake was a carp lake. In those days Venetia was the country, quite different from today

Lake Joanne near Trax Farm? They stocked it with trout, if that's the one you're asking about.

As others said, stocked trout & channel catfish in the upper big lake. It also held bass & panfish. They had multiple pictures of pike that were caught in the upper lake in their store/office. Lower lake was a carp pond, but there were probably random trout & cats in there too.

When I was young, my family would go to lake Joanne all the time. Dad would fish for carp in the lower lake to try to catch a tagged carp and enter the carp kitty. My brother and I would walk around the big lake and try to catch anything that would bite. I loved to go after the bass in there. But yeah, they stocked it with trout and catfish.

my guess ....the chances are pretty low its been almost 25yrs since it was stocked, and the new residential plans don't take nicely to people showing up to fish. Pretty sure it is permitted and only residents can obtain permits

The way that lake looks now is not how it used to look. The lakes were drained when they built that housing development, re-excavated, and a fountain installed. Unless northerns can live in a bulldozer or under mud for a while, chances are zero.

Are you sure they drained the main lake? The carp lake was definitely drained, but I don't ever recall the main lake being emptied. I am certain there would some huuuuge carp/cats in the big lake had it never been drained. Recently found out I know somebody who lives up in there and she hates taking her nephew fishing at the big lake - I am working on getting my carp gear in there at some point..............

I do live around the lakes and have fished them before on occasion. Definitely big carp and big largemouth. From living in the area you do hear about rumors of walleye, pike, etc. It would be nice to take a paddle boat or canoe out onto the big lake

I am not 100% sure they drained the big lake. However, it is definitely not the same shape it used to be & it has had a fountain installed in the middle of it. Not sure how they'd install a fountain & the footings for the fountain without draining the lake. Yea, it could be done with divers & coffer dams. But a developer isn't going to pay the extra money for that specialized labor if he can just drain the thing & kill a few catfish & carp. The spillway that used to connect the two lakes is also gone.

The valley that lake Joanne is in has 4 lakes. Going down stream, the first small lake is used for irrigation. The next is the one with the new fountain. The third is the "Big" lake that was stocked and doesn't have a fountain and I don't believe it was ever drained. The fourth was the carp lake. There are posted signs around all the property in that valley. Don't see anyone fishing there or don't know of a fishing by permit. I live about two miles from there and pass it often.

I was fishing the lake about a year and half ago and saw a wall-eye standing from the little dock they have by the entrance to the housing development, but other than that i have only caught and seen pan fish and largemouth. Wish the lake could get back to its glory days

I live in the area, and I have been asked to leave Lake Joanne several times. Lake Joanne is the largest of the four lakes/ponds people have been referring to. It still has excellent largemouth and huge catfish. Plastic frogs have worked quite well for me. Concerning the pond with the fountain: It is a floating fountain secured from shore by ropes. I don't think they had to drain the pond to place the fountain. There are bass in there as well, but many areas are shallow. I have permission to fish that body of water, but on the other hand, no one has ever approached me there. The residents don't seem to care. The first pond, from upstream, is owned by Bebout Farms (I think that is the name). I've asked them for permission to fish it, but they said no way. Too bad, of all of those ponds, it looks like it has the most potential.

As many have written, trout, bass and panfish in the main lake. I have heard rumors [?] of pike in there as well. Carp in the lower for contests along with cats. From what I remember it's fairly well lit up at night, but I'd be more than willing to put on some camo and go in there at night. [Think Duck Dynasty!] Yes, I know it's not right. When I drove by it after 20 years had passed, I actually drove right past it as I didn't recognize the place. How sad! That's exactly the lake they are talking about Ridgehunter. If you saw it after the Developers got a hold of it, you know it's become more than a ghost of it's former glory. A shame for many, progress for others.

They ran carp tournaments every weekend in the summer. (7-7 or 6-6) You paid your entry fee then could enter the kitties...(no not cats) If memory is correct top three carp by weight won the cash.(60%-30%-10%) They had tagged carps that the pot ran until someone caught that tag. The one night a man beside me caught a tagged one and it weighed 32 pounds. He took home over $450 that night. This was back around 1980. Great times with great buddies.
