Good job taking pics of that silly lil place those ice walls went all the way up to the falls fyi.
As for this weather I too am sick of the cold and hoping  we get an extended spring.
On the global warming/climate change it always makes me laugh how humans have to name /categorize/and regulate everything its nature it is what it is......
That's one of the reasons I love the outdoors there are always changes and different conditions to adjust to-new things to learn.

You walked up there? Just stay in the creek? Wow. I imagined they went up pretty far.

Yeah water was high and stained Sunday just went along the edge of water it was a bit nerve racking  considering I fished the machester hole before that and large chunks of those ice walls were dropping off.
I watched a few other guys try it and turn around.
Walked up to rt 5 to see the new under the bridge work interesting solution they came up with.

Serious question: If the polar ice cap is floating ice, how will it melting cause sea levels to rise? The science of it, please.

Some of the Antarctic ice cap is on land and not floating.  Without doing much research I would simply say that in the Antarctic, the ice is melting over land and going into the ocean.

However it is thought by most scientists that the Earth didn't always have ice caps.  Evidence also shows that there may have been about 5 different periods in Earth's geological history where ice caps didn't exist at all during warming periods, but then they came back during ice ages.   We are just coming out of a major ice age that began over 2.5 million years ago, and it's thought that this is the only period when two ice caps ever existed.  So of course we are entering into the next warming period.  Humans may be accelerating it a little, but certainly not causing it based on the Earth's history.  Anyone thinking we can totally stop it or affect change enough to make a significant difference is drinking to much kool-aid in my opinion.

Worked at Girard HS today.  The drive from Pgh was fine...until Edinboro.  At 730am all *^%((*@# broke loose.  Couldn't see 20 feet in front of me.  Thank God I was able to avoid a 20-30 car accident on I-79 which closed the southbound lanes for hours.
Yeah...I didn't fish today!  Wind chills in double digit below zero.  Elk was mostly locked up around Legion Hole.  With even lower temps the next couple days, I see no steelhead from the creeks being caught for at least another week :(

Glad you are still among us. That was a pretty bad wreck and the amount of snow that fell all at once was incredible.

Thanks for the motivating comment- made me wander the creeks and try prove you wrong.
Caught 5 broke off 2-saw 1 other fisherperson very enjoyable day.
After about 1pm the slush flow cleared.
Never been so happy to catch 5 fish...

^ Nice pics, I had the itch to take a ride up today but never made it. Glad you were able to get some action before this 40 feet of snow comes lol.

You're in the clear as far as the heavy snows are concerned for Sun-Mon -- you'll see only 1-3 inches Sat night from a different system.

Great pics, Erie is indeed a beast in the winter, gives you time to think, I guess.  I logged my second kayak fishing trip of the year here in TN yesterday, went barefoot I might add "local custom". Picked up 9 green fish (largemouth bass). 4 pushed 4lbs+, 3 in the 2-2.5lb range and 2 dinks.  Cold front pushing in had them taking greedy. God I love pre spawn bassin' in the south!

wcw-glad to be proved wrong!  Did u fish on thursday?  That was some unbelievable wind and snow in the morning, if u fished in that, ur insane!  I was gone from erie by 11am, so I'm guessing it got better later in the day.

Didn't really just go out to prove you wrong but your comment did add some motivation.
I went out about a week before that and got skunked so I was on a mission.
The weather has been nasty I did not fish Thur.I live 20 minutes from Elk so I just pick and choose the best days.

The mouth is still locked up tight, actually locked up again. I did not venture up stream except that what I can see around Rt 20 Walnut there is still a lot of ice and little water. We will be having a warm up this week so it should start to open up some more. The mouth will get jammed up but there should be open water well upstream by the end of the week.

Any Updates CBeagler? I just booked for 27th to the 30th and I'm praying the weather co-operates and the stream opens up. Iv been seeing some fisherman on the webcams but who knows quantity/quality of the fish. The week i booked was my last available time to come in the spring so it's either go or not make a spring trip.

I was up there today for work and checked out the water. Mid and upper elk are icy in the mornings and slushy with some open spots later in the day. If it had been a little warmer today (10
below with wind), I woulda jumped in to fish. By the time u get here on the 27th, u will have some open water. No one can accurately predict Erie weather that far in advance though, so who knows what the creek levels might be. But that's always a factor whether it's winter or not.
I'll be up for work on the 27th, and for the first time since December, I have complete confidence that I'll be catching steelhead.

Due to my work schedule and travel time (7 hours) I've given up trying to keep track of water levels. I always find fishable water. I've never had to worry about open water in late March though. I've also never experienced the mouths of the creeks being locked up late March.

The walnut access looks just like my first set of pics again. Even a little worse. The ice in the marina is up over the banks as well. A lot of ice came down the creek and met the lake with a 45 knot wind trying to push lake ice back up the creek.
