Thanks for taking the time to take pics and post them. I appreciate it. If anyone caught and released fish recently, they're about to be dead anyway. Good thing its put and take. Good news is I bet after this blows out you can probably just seine the lake shore for fresh ground steelhead for fish cakes.

Great pics, thanks! Few people that fish the tribs rarely get to see them like this. About twenty years ago took my then 13 year old son for a winter trip to the Erie area just to see the changes that occur this time of year. Large piles(mountains) of slab ice dotted the shore on Presque Isle, along with room size pieces of slab ice laying and stacked on the parking lot at Walnut. That ice pile up must have happened as a result of a very strong north or north-eastern storm.  Visited the city of ice dwellers who were fishing on the bay cooking, drilling or just playing on the ice and snow. And then there were skaters, wind surfers on skis and the larger surfer devices on multiple skates that skimmed the ice at very fast speeds. A completely different world.

I drilled quite a few holes in a stream yesterday where some friends and I caught a bunch over 2 trips under the ice in the last month. I had trouble finding water. Some spots frozen to bottom. At best ice than slush to bottom with maybe 6" of water. This was in the deepest holes. I punched thru slush with camera and saw a few fish squeezed in but couldn't get a lure thru the slush to fish for them. No doubt fish can find places to hide, but id bet most are already dead and the ones left will be steamrolled this week in the ice jams. March should be the best late ice fishing in years, I dont see any steelhead streams in my near future.

In my day we would bust ice from the mouth to the mall and then ride an ice raft all the way down trolling cleos and ko wobblers the whole time. "fishermen" these days. Yeeesh.

I might be pushing my early March trip back a few weeks by the looks of that ice. The itch to go to Erie is strong, but not THAT strong.

I'll be keeping an eye on it. I am down there just about every day. With the warm up it may get messy in a hurry. The lake ice has the creek locked and all that ice has no where to go. A lot more ice will be trying to come downstream with a whole lot of water.

I make the trip from philly every year in November and March. Last year the March trip had temps in the teens and single digits at night. We woke up to a fresh 12inches of the white stuff on our second to last day. The prior year it never dropped below 50 degrees and we caught several smallies from the legion to the mouth.

I'm hoping for somewhere in between those extremes this trip

Just got back into town, it's dark but I went down anyway. Sorry no pics, but it is pretty cool to see. The creek is running and there has to be 10 feet of ice on the banks in some spots.

I fished a silly lil' place called Walnut Creek Access yesterday.
I hadn't fished the place in a few years and was quickly reminded why.
Ice walls lined the creek and were dropping chunks of ice into the water periodically.
You had to watch out where you were standing and deal with a lot floaters drifting by.
Fishing wasn't that great landed 8 saw about that may others landed most of the fish were small.
Ice jams must be preventing the bigger fish from entering creek.
I do think there was some good fishing east of there but I did not roam enough.
Keep fishin' topdogg ur spelling is jus fine.
Back to the deep freeze and work.......WCW

"Funny you never hear from any of the global-warming loonies when the weather gets like this."

That statement is simplistic and shows a lack of knowledge of the science behind the issue. Global climate is NOT the same as local weather at any given time. In fact, the harsh winter can be explained by climate change. The jet stream, which act as a barrier to arctic air masses, have weakened, and thus have allowed frigid air from the north to disperse farther south than normal.

Global climate change is a proven fact. The cause of it can be debated, but the scientific data is solid.

Nice change of lingo there.  Global WARMING, versus climate change.  Climate change has been observed throughout the history of the world.  Not dependent on how many suv's, prius' or people farting into the atmosphere.
Global warming, by contrast, is a complete liberal fabrication with definite political implications.

and by the way, I will be working in erie thursday, and haven't fished for steel in months (longest I've gone in 8 years) because of the weather and a new baby.  Im tweaking like a kid without his fun dip.
Air temps for thursday are looking frigid.  Think it will lock back up by then upstream?

Good job taking pics of that silly lil place those ice walls went all the way up to the falls fyi.
As for this weather I too am sick of the cold and hoping  we get an extended spring.
On the global warming/climate change it always makes me laugh how humans have to name /categorize/and regulate everything its nature it is what it is......
That's one of the reasons I love the outdoors there are always changes and different conditions to adjust to-new things to learn.

Thank you.

I half-typed three different responses, and none of them were as polite & succinct as yours, before eventually deciding it wasn't worth the time.

According to the biggest scientific group in the world, we're going to see more winters like this because climate change is destroying the jet streams that shield us from arctic air. Yes, at the fourth warmest January since 1880.
This January was 1.17 degrees above the average 20th century global temperature of 53.6 degrees. But there are still 11 other months.

Averaged over all land and ocean surfaces, the temperature has increased roughly 1.53 degrees from 1880 to 2012.

Yes, that's right--1.53 degrees.

Durrrr, yeah the Earth has never gone through natural heating/cooling cycles before right?  Not like we have ever been much hotter or much cooler before the industrial revolution occurred.  The sun with it's ever changing solar activity and sun spots couldn't have any direct input into our temps on earth right?

and you know this...how? Because Glenn Beck told you? Something like 95% of climatologists around the world believe that global warming is occurring, but I guess you know better than them. 1.54 degrees doesn't sound like much but remember this is a GLOBAL average, and the rate of temperature rise is increasing. Temperatures in the Arctic have risen 4-7 degrees in the last 50 years. The ice caps are shrinking, glaciers are melting, and sea levels are rising. These are all measurable, quantifiable parameters. As I said, you can debate the cause of it but global warming is  real. To deny it in the face of scientifically proven facts is just foolish.
