id appreciate an update on erie steelhead fishing conditions

I don, t know how it has been in erie but where I live winter has been pretty rough.  Are the streams locked tight with ice.  Are erie tribs expecting a big fish kill when the tribs do clear.  I have been missing my winter erie steel runs.

Tribs are locked up right now. I would expect the upper sections would be open next week. However, when the tribs blow out, there will be a big fish kill due to the massive amounts of ice. Unfortunately, it is like a meat grinder on the lower sections of the tribs. I won't be up until mid to late march due to the conditions this winter.

I was out yesterday it was nice to walk around but no fish were caught.
Lower Elk is 7/8 covered in ice!!!!!
Lots of ice jams piled up everywhere its going to be an absolute mess next week when the ice breaks up.
This winter has been COLD and I think we all are looking forward to a warm up.
See my post "Its a bit icy out there" for other recent pics.
I live close by that's the only reason I tried at all.

Each blow out of ice we have had this year has killed fish, Ive seen more dead fish the days following the blow outs than I have ever seen before.

The Lord has blessed us all today... It's just that he has been particularly good to me.

I know elk has a deep channel but i actually think the ice blocks a lot of fish from coming into the tribs.. so maybe after the blowout we will see a nice run. And the water has probably been 33 degrees. Ive caught fish at 35 but its hard to believe anything moves when its that cold.

Are the ice jams up to route 5 yet?

Man i: A jam itself of course will not kill a fish. But several thousands of tons of ice chunks packed from the stream bed all the way up over the bank carving its way downstream like a glacier will absolutely kill quite a few fish. We have even found them hanging from tree branches when the ice walls fall after the melt.

Yeah, someone posted somewhere that they were ice fishing on a trib and in some of the deeper holes on elk the ice was 6" from the bottom. Some had 6" of slush at the bottom and some holes had ice all the way to the bottom. I doubt the 3 rivers will ever get anywhere near that bad.

Ice jams 100% do kill fish in a flat shale bed stream that isn't that deep even when there is water.
