Boat for Yough

Im looking at buying a 16' grizzly with a 25hp short shaft. Will I be able to run the Yough when its not super low?

If you're gonna run the boat mainly on the river, I'd opt for a 40 with a jet. Just my opinion. 25 is fine for that boat but when you go with a jet you're gonna reduce your hp. If I was gonna run the Yough, I'd get the same boat, but I'd put a beavertail mud motor on it. the only reason being ....water level is not a big issue. Just my opinion. Hope I was able to give you some ideas.

No lower unit. You hit a rock, prop has s cage around it, whole shaft kicks up. No reduction on HP either, you get a 25 HP mud motor there's 25 HP at the prop. You don't see many of them around here, but the experience's I had with them they're borderline bulletproof.I guess there is a lower unit on them but they're a lot different than a conventional prop, jet drive. They're built to beat. Once again just my opinion. I don't want to fire up any of the jet guys.

I'd say go for the jet because of the depth on the Mon and lack of drastic depth changes on any lakes. But if I was gonna run the Yough most of the time in a Jon boat a mud motor would be hard to beat I think. Mainly because of the depth and the rocks. Plus they' re fairly easy to maintain. Check out Beavertails web site. I think Go- Devil still makes them also. All the ones i've seen have a Briggs motor on them. Would be nice to get one with a Honda.

The 25hp on the boat that im buying is a prop not a jet.

If you are going to run the Yough with the prop---at least consider a prop guard.

Greenhead - some info on this thread from a few years back.  http://forums.fishusa.com/Message/252737-Yough-motor-boat/

I bought a smaller boat with a 7.5hp that rides much higher than my other boat, which will be used more for the Yough.  I'll still follow most of the advice on the thread, and stay in the deeper pools.  I would recommend to learn a stretch while the water is lower/clear, before trying to run a prop motor while higher/stained.  Mark out where some of the larger boulders are.  I'm not sure how a Grizzly rides, if you need a deep launch or not, but some suggestions on the thread of deeper launches.

If it is your primary water, I'd definitely go with a jet (or mud - never looked at those).  If not, you'll be limited to the pools, but many give you a mile or so stretch.  I'd imagine in the Summer, you could walk your boat through some to the next pool up?

Yes, its possible. Just pay attention to where you're at and like olqerman said definitely invest in a prop guard if you're gonna go that way. Mac's river runner is one of the best.

You'd be fine in the lower yough from the rapids below Turner Valley all the way to Mckeesport in that grizzly.  At times, some spots get shallow and you need to pay attn. or "bag it" and stick to the deeper areas but I used to fish that area a little in my 14' Starcraft with a 15 hp short shaft.  Only bump bottom a couple times, worst was in the summer by the restaurant in little Boston and then when I tried to get up past the rapids in Turner Valley.  I made it through them fine but couldn't find the channel to go much further upstream with my draft.
