Gnarly Brown Trout

I am very interested in catching trophy Brown trout out of our Erie tributaries. Here is a picture of a guy I met on one of the Mile Creeks in September 2012. Mean looking Brown caut in the lower section of the creek on a nightcrawler. My cousin helped him net many steel and this Brown, they were loving the worms that day, and I never leave home without them now. So im looking for more information on these big Browns. Where do they come from? What time of year can u catch them and where are your chances good. What bait and flies do they prefer? How far upstream do they go?
So please post any info about these great trophy Browns, as well as pictures and reports. This year and years past. Thanks.

Do they go in with the steelhead smolts? Or are they stocked for the regular trout season and they swim into the lake?

So the catch of a lifetime for you is an invasive species raised in a concrete raceway and dumped in drainage ditches and cricks across northwestern PA in absurd numbers?

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they'd be just as fun to catch and to look at just like the other invasive species raised in concrete raceways and dumped in drainage ditches and cricks across northwestern PA in absurd numbers.  But the catch of a lifetime?

You can find info about stocking numbers and locations on the PFBC website or through a search on Google.

COME ON GUYS IF YOU REALLY WANT TO CATCH A TROPHY BROWN, GO TO NEW YORK LIKE TIM FROM HARRISBURG SAID. THOSE BROWNS IN ERIE SHOULD BE RELEASED TO GET THE POPULATION STARTED. IF YOU TAKE EVERY BROWN OUT OF THE CREEKS IN ERIE ,ERIE WILL NEVER HAVE A TROPHY BROWN TROUT FISHERY.

The monster that has become the Erie steelhead fishery is disturbing any more.  Catch of a lifetime?  WTF?

Well...for some folks it is the brown of a lifetime, or even the fish of a lifetime.  It's all relative.  Take for example the 28 inch spring run steelhead I have on my wall. I have caught bigger and smaller. I caught it over 30 years ago when the steelhead were somewhat of a novelty.  To me it is still the fish of a lifetime. So it may be for someone who rarely fishes for one, or has a shorter lifetime. SO maybe the question is not "what fish?" but "who's lifetime?"

Boy, there sure are a lot of jerks on here! Guy caught a beautiful fish that he is proud of and ppl give him crap! By all means, if someone wants to keep a fish they are proud of, others should be happy for him, not jealous! I used to fly fish a lot, but haven't gotten my fly rod out in years because I don't want to be associated with the snobs and their self-righteous behavior. I've witnessed guys giving 10 year old kids crap for having a couple fish on their stringers. Pretty disgusting!!! No, people shouldn't fill their freezer with fish they're not going to eat, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with keeping a couple now and then. Same goes for deer hunting. I shoot what most would consider big bucks nearly every year, but when I see a guy shoot a 5 point, I congratulate him. People who shame those who don't take things up to their standards should stay home and mow the grass instead. Hunting and fishing would be much better off without you!!

i think its safe to say that a 6lb brown caught in my homestate of PA would be a more prized trophy than say a bigger brown caut in NY. Because they are more rare here. Its kind of like shooting a big buck in PA. Yea i could spend a couple of grand n go to illinois and shoot a bigger buck and do it much quicker too. But the years of hunting and efforts to make that home state kill make it that more of a trophy to me.

They stock the browns in Erie. Seems like you find more on the east side, maybe some extra ny stragglers?
It's cool to catch one, but it wouldn't be my "fish of a lifetime." Now to catch a salmon in Erie, years after they discontinued the stocking , that'd be pretty cool.

couldn't agree more. But sometimes the biggest ones are the most memorable. Also fishing with great friends at your favorite spot and catching the big one. Or when conditions are tough you value the catch more.

Much thanks to the guys who make this site worth being on. Theres so many jag offs who suck the life And fun out of this site. Haters please sit down and shut up, and let the real sportsman run the show.

You can see that fish at Poor Richard's Bait shop.  It's on the wall above the terminal tackle.
