I have always heard that ice fishing at flood control lakes (acoe) is prohibited. But this post prodded me to do a little digging. This corps pub lists ice fishing at Tionesta and East Branch Clarion River Lake as a recreational activity. So, I called and spoke with Kathy at the Crooked Creek Park Office, 724-763-3161, and she said they discourage the activity due to fluctuating water levels below the ice. Currently the CC recorded message - Daily Lake Information - (724-763-2764), lists all public areas as being closed due to the snow. One of the probs.with winter fishing at C.C. is that once that they close the road to the beach or the boat ramps is that they may not open them until April. To get to the water then involves a approx. 1/2-3/4 mile downhill walk, that seems to turn into a 4 mile walk uphill to the car. If something bad would happen while you were down there, it is very unlikely that you would get help in time to save you. I would strongly advise you to check the lake elevation to see if there has been a drop in the water level. As of to-day it is 842' which is normal for this time of year.

Yeah, sounds like it ain't "worth the trip" to me. Plenty of other water to fish.

I would not recommend ice fishing any acoe flood control lake. Water level fluctuations can cause a deadly situation. I.e. you drill a hole, waters 4' below the bottom of the Hole, ice breaks, you're dead.

There was 1 hut out on Conemaugh Dam today, near the Aultman's Run canoe launch.

Road was closed. Not far from the upper road to the lake, though.

I personally wouldn't go near that place on the ice. Nobody and nothing there to help if you get in trouble either. Just the deep mud could kill you, even if you broke through right off shore. Conemaugh rises and falls about 75 feet between the low and high water limits. It has gone up and down over 3 feet just since Tuesday (904 ft to 901, then back to 904 - see attached link). This is way more variability than any of the other lakes around here. http://water.weather.gov/...wfo=pbz&gage=cnmp1

Like I said, I personally would never ice fish one. The tail waters of these lakes can be good options year round though.

Actualy approx. 10yrs or so ago, a hunter capsized his canoe first day of buck season & due to high water they didn't find his body until March, floating in the lake.Being cautious does not make you less of a man. Nor is it a joke IMO. sam

Bad idea!!!! I live pretty much on loyalhanna lake and regularly fish/ hunt crooked creek and conamuagh. i have witnessed the army corps drop and raise the water level several feet within minutes! If they anticipated an influx of water from ANY watershed going into the impoundment they will open the gates and drop the water without notice! And if they feel the amount of water will effect any watershed down stream they will close the gates and raise/retain the water. NOT SAFE! But that's just my input.
